7yBob May fired a 9-under-par 63 at TPC Summerlin to hold a one-stroke first round lead at the Frys.com Open.

It was a perfect day for scoring and Bob May took advantage of the conditions. His card had two eagles, six birdies and a bogey that came on the first hole of the day. May has had a tough time in recent years because of a series of injuries and a win in Las Vegas would be a huge boost to his career. The weather forecast for the second round calls for the temperatures to start in the low-60’s then warming up to the low-80’s by the early afternoon. The winds will start the day at 7 mph. from the South, but they will build to 13 mph. in the afternoon with a chance of very heavy winds as a front moves through the area.

7yBob May withdrew on Tuesday afternoon from the Viking Classic.

He has been replaced in the field by Jim McGovern, who had a very nice T-5 at last week’s Albertsons Boise Open on the Nationwide Tour.

7yBob May finished in a tied for 49th place at the Stanford St. Jude, but he failed to earn enough to retain his status on the PGA Tour.

May had been playing on a Minor Medical Extension and the Extension has now run out with him finishing $140,142 short of earning conditional status. He will now have a limited amount of sponsor’s exemptions he can play on and he will have to play his way back on the Tour via the Nationwide Tour or to try to get his card back at Q School.

7yBob May carded a final round of 3-under-par 69 to finish in a tie for 30th place at the AT&T Classic.

May has played in three events on the Tour this season on a Minor Medical extension, and with today’s check for $34,925.00, he now needs $440,785 in his next start on the Tour to retain Major Medical status for the rest of the 2008 season. It is possible for him to retain a Conditional status on the Tour if he earns $154,802 in his next start, otherwise he will have to play for the rest of the season on the Nationwide Tour in hope of earning enough to receive his Tour card for the 2009 season.

7yBob May is listed in the published field at next week’s AT&T Classic.

May has been toiling mostly on the Nationwide Tour this year but has two starts remaining on his Minor Medical extension to earn $475,710 and get escalated to a Major Medical. He finished T-48 at last year’s AT&T but his uncanny ability to go super-low at anytime makes him a dynamic start if you need to put all your eggs into one basket. He’s certainly motivated to go for broke.

He’s been out the last two years with a lower-back injury, but will get a shot at 15 events this year to secure his card for next year. Don’t count on that happening.

7yBob May will tee it up in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open thanks to a sponsor exemption.

May is a veteran of eight previous editions of this event, with his tie for fifth in 2007 his most recent and best finish. He last played on the PGA TOUR in 2011 at the Reno-Tahoe Open, where he tied for 57th. He has no value in any fantasy format.

7yBob May shot a 64 on Sunday but came up a shot short at the B.C. Open, finishing alone in second place to John Rollins.

May was on a medical exemption, but it looks like he’s won enough money to be fully exempt the rest of the year. He should be a decent fantasy pickup based on his strong play this week. He has been dealing with back problems for several years now, but they appear to be behind him.

He has been replaced in the field by Cameron Beckman. Beckman’s best finish at the Nissan Open was a T-19 in 2002.
