3yFrom the 15th-to-last pairing, World No. 524 Bo Hoag painted a day-low, career-tying-low 8-under 30-33=63 in R3 of the John Deere Classic, vaulting 18 spots to T6 on 14-under 199, five back of leader J.T. Poston (67).

Playing this season on conditional status, the Ohio State alum arrived 2-for-14 on the season, missing his last seven individual cuts, with a best of T54 at the opposite-field Corales back in March (74-69-68-74). His career best, and lone top 10 in 71 events, is a T9 on debut at the 2020 Sony Open during his rookie campaign, where he was T7 thru 54 holes, and today’s 63 matches his career low in 194 rounds, the other, also an 8-under version, came in R4 of the 2020 3M Open for a backdoor T12. The 33-year-old, who celebrates his birthday this month (July 25th), finished 129th in the FedExCup standings last season, this after finishing 125th in 2020, and will be in the third-to-last pairing on Sunday with TOUR rookie and first-timer Callum Tarren. Today, he gained 2.933 strokes tee-to-green, 2.272 of that around, including a hole-out eagle-3 at 2 from a greenside bunker, and 2.676 on-the-green. See link below to post-round comments.

3yBo Hoag is looking to turn the tide this week at the Travelers Championship, where he’ll make his second start after earning his place in the field at TPC River Highlands through qualifying on Monday.

The 33-year-old Hoag, an Ohio State product, made six birdies and one bogey for a 5-under 67 on Monday at Ellington Ridge Country Club in Ellington, Conn. Patrick Flavin earned medalist honors with a 66, while Ben Silverman and Conrad Shindler also advanced with rounds of 67. Hoag is coming off a missed cut at the U.S. Open, where he earned his spot in the field by finishing T-5 at the Springfield, Ohio, qualifier, but he shot 72-75 to miss the cut at The Country Club by four shots. He’s riding an unfortunate stretch of seven missed cuts dating back to the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and he’s made just two cuts in 13 starts this season with a T-54 at the Corales Puntacana Championship being his best finish. This week will mark Hoag’s second appearance in the Travelers, where he missed the cut in 2020.

3yEight players out of 77 earned their spots in next week’s U.S. Open through qualifying Monday at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio, led by Brian Stuard and South Africa’s MJ Daffue, who finished at 7-under 133 to share medalist honors.

Next week’s start at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., will mark the seven U.S. Open appearance for 39-year-old Stuard, who shot 68-65 on Monday and has qualified for all previous six appearances through the Springfield qualifying site. Also advancing to next week are Beau Hossler (67-68), amateur Maxwell Moldovan, Troy Merritt, Bo Hoag, Sam Stevens and amateur Adrien Dumont de Chassart from Belgium. Nick Hardy finished as first alternate with Jim Herman as second alternate. Missing out on qualifying were world No. 81 Cameron Davis, Scott Piercy, Brandt Snedeker, Robert Streb and Sahith Theegala.

3yBo Hoag heads back home to Ohio ahead of this week’s Memorial Tournament, his fourth start at the prestigious event.

Hoag was born and raised in Columbus so his comfort in the area is highly elevated this week. It goes even further, though, as his late grandfather was a founding member at Muirfield Village Golf Club and Hoag has spent plenty of time on the property over the years. That local knowledge didn’t matter much in his first three starts here but he did rack up a T13 finish last year. He’ll give it another go this week as he plays on a sponsor’s invite. Hoag is struggling this season as he arrives with just two cuts made in 10 events played. The Ohio State product has also started teeing up on the Korn Ferry circuit with a trio of top 30s in five starts this season. He’s yet to land a top-50 finish on the PGA TOUR this season but perhaps a trip back home can spark some magic.

4yBo Hoag roared out of the gate in round one of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship before slowing his pace to author a 1-under-par 33-37=70, matching the fourth-best score recorded from the morning wave at Port Royal Golf Course.

Hoag started his week on Thursday morning when winds were at their peak. It didn’t bother him initially as he circled three birdies before making the turn while keeping a clean card. That would be the end of his (positive) scoring, though, as he swallowed two bogeys and seven pars on his homeward nine. Hoag is known for his steady striking but he split just 6-of-14 fairways today, landing 12 greens in regulation. While a 1-under 70 doesn’t seem like anything to write home about, his score was actually 4.19 shots better than the morning average, due to the extreme winds and light rain. Hoag’s T11 finish at this event two years ago remains the second-best finish of his PGA TOUR career. That should add some confidence to his tank as he attempts to play his way back toward another top-15 finish.

4yBeginning off No. 10 tee, World No. 239 Bo Hoag walked off with bogey but still carded a 5-under-par 33-33=66 in the second round of the 3M Open to post 9-under 133, up six spots to T3 and the clubhouse lead with first-timer Chez Reavie (67). UPDATE: With R2 complete, Hoag is T3, one back of co-leaders Adam Hadwin (65) and Ryan Armour (65), who he’ll be with in the final threesome on Saturday.

The Ohio State alum, who arrived 125th in the FedExCup standings, is two swings back of the leader on the course, 18-hole quad-leader Jhonattan Vegas, who’s playing his second-to-last hole. This is his second 3M after a T12 last year, where he closed in a day-tying-low, career-low 63 (9 birdies, 1 bogey), and checked in off a season-best T11 at last week’s opposite-field Barbasol, where he was bogey-free in Rounds 1 and 3, and T8 at the halfway point (66-68-67-69). On nine (of 14) fairways and 14 greens in regulation, the 32-year-old, who celebrates his birthday on Sunday (July 25th), lost 0.467 strokes off-the-tee but gained 2.154 approaching and 2.392 with the flat stick. His lone drop was at the difficult par-4 ninth (forced layup after errant tee ball), but camouflaged that with six circles at 11, 12, 18, 2, 4 and 5, four from between 10 and 26 feet. 4yRound one of the 3M Open was suspended due to darkness at 8:54 p.m. CT and will resume at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning.

A surprise pop-up “storm” was the reason they couldn’t finish today. The weather delay lasted for 2 hours, 24 minutes. They should be able to get back on track tomorrow, barring any other unforeseen weather events. Prior to the horn sounding, Bo Hoag turned in a bogey-free 67 to get his week starts. The Ohio State product put on a ball-striking clinic with 10 fairways hit and 17 greens pelted in regulation. Starting the week right on the FedExCup Playoffs bubble (125th), there is plenty of pressure for him to perform over the final month of the season.

4yWorld No. 225 Bo Hoag withdrew during the second round of the Palmetto Championship at Congaree.

At press time, no reason has been furnished for the WD, Hoag being the eighth player to call it quits and fourth of the day. Beginning off No. 10 tee, he was 2-over thru 15 holes (2 birdies, 4 bogeys), 6-over total after opening with a birdie-less 75. The Columbus, Ohio, native checked in off a season-best T13 at last week’s Memorial Tournament (68-73-72-72), and then traveled to Springfield CC (Ohio) for final qualifying for next week’s U.S. Open. He finished T2 there on 5-under (69-65) to earn his first major appearance. This is the Ohio State alum’s second mid-tourney WD in 50 events, first since last season’s American Express.

4yFirst-round action at the 2021 Memorial Tournament was suspended due to inclement weather in the area, at 12:46 p.m. ET with no current timetable for play to resume. UPDATE: Play is now set to resume at 2:45 p.m.

The course received plenty of precipitation in the lead-up to the event but the forecast dries up after today. As of now there is no indication of when play will resume but we will update when that news pops up. One golfer that did find his way to the clubhouse just in time to avoid the delay was local product, Bo Hoag. The Ohio State Buckeye twirled a 4-under 68 today to land inside of the top 10 on the early leaderboard. “Did everything pretty nicely. Put the ball in the fairway, hit some good approach shots and I rolled the ball well. Didn’t make too many mistakes and made it pretty stress free... this is a tournament that I grew up watching as a kid coming out here, trying to get an autograph, trying to pick the range, I volunteered as range guy for a little bit and obviously some family ties and my connection with Jack Nicklaus, so, yeah, it is my favorite tournament, for sure.”

4yBo Hoag will feel right at home this week as he plays the Memorial Tournament on a sponsor’s invite, an event he grew up attending on a yearly basis.

The Ohio State product brings plenty of local knowledge to the table this week. He made his tournament debut here back in 2012 and had this to say when asked how many times he’s played Muirfield Village Golf Club, “A lot. I’d have to say over 100, easily, probably, over the years.” He missed the cut in that 2012 debut but returned last year to find a T62 finish. More recently, he arrives amidst a prolonged slump, finishing 66th or worse in eight straight starts. His early-season results still have him treading water in the FedExCup race, currently just outside the Top 125 Playoffs bubble (133rd). Hoag’s comfort on the course is what makes him an appealing fantasy option in weekly formats but gamers should weigh the pros and cons before jumping in.
