Best XI: Week 5

Hi guys, It’s Rob here filling in for Galin and bringing you the best team from last weekend. You’ll note that there’s a few players that will probably end up being consistent achievers (Di Maria, Baines, Ulloa) and some new comers who I suspect we won’t see again for a bit (Cisse). In a slight peculiarity, there were two formations (3-4-3 and 4-4-2) that both scored the maximum 214 points (take out Ulloa and Kelly and introduce Van Aanholt and Gibbs). I have just chosen to highlight the 3-4-3 formation as most fantasy managers tend to favour this more attacking formation.

Points

The top possible score this week in an allowable formation was 214 points, quite a drop on previous weeks.

Cost

This is the first week where it wasn’t possible to simply select the best performing players (a total of 100.38m against an available budget of 96m*) so some clever adjustments were made to deliver the optimum team. The new price of our Best XI (if you were to try to create this team now after the price changes) is £ 115.83M. That’s a 25.8% increase in price.

*the budget of 96m is based on 4m being used for substitutes.

MVP

The highest score of the week was Niko Kranjcar, who finished with an impressive 25 points after reuniting with Harry Rednapp at QPR. This return was extremely impressive considering his paltry starting cost of 6.31m – an impressive ROI of 396%. I think it would be a bid risk to expect this sort of performance from either Kranjcar or QPR so a watching brief is advised especially as his cost is now up to 9.62m

Best ROI

The best return on your investment this week was Martin Kelly, the Crystal Palace defender who’s owned by 40% of managers (although primarily on the bench I suspect). His quite frankly astonishing return of 684% is amazing and I wonder if Brenden Rodgers is regretting his decision considering the leaky habits of his own players. At just 3.63 now, those managers who don’t hold him should be looking to add him at least to their bench.

Vardy, Heaton and Cresswell all managed to achieve a ROI of over 400% and I strongly suspect that Burnley’s goalkeeper will be an excellent pick with the right match-up.

Formation

As explained above, there were two winning formations this week and although it was only the defenders who failed to make it above 20, the distribution was still fairly balanced. Galin’s previous assertion that minimising defenders is the best approach remains valid although this week it was only just the case. As this week creating a rather surprising draw I won’t be updating Galin’s formation count table as I’m unsure exactly how he would like it recorded.

Team Rankings

This week’s best performing players all came from teams to the bottom end of our Team Ranking’s table and in fact, Cisse’s performance finally brought Newcastle onto the table at all. The top five teams remain the same although I strongly suspect that Di Maria and Herrera will help Manchester United move up the chart going forward.
