Mike Weir will be making his final start on his Non-exempt Medical Extension at next week’s Honda Classic.
Since we relayed this to you earlier today, this isn’t news but now that the official field has been released confirming his commitment, we can break down what he needs to retain status on the PGA TOUR. The Honda has a purse of $5.7 million. Weir needs to bank $644,854 to earn a promotion to the Major Medical category, but only a victory would secure that, so he’d climb into Priority Ranking No. 9 anyway. Short of the win, he could secure conditional status (for which he needs $388,631) with no worse than a three-way tie for second place worth $425,600. (A four-way T2 would come up short by $12,431. A solo third would fall shy by just $1,031.) Given the state of Weir’s game in recent memory, it’s unlikely that he’ll make the cut much less make noise as it relates to his medical extension. Regardless, he’s set to compete at Bay Hill, the Masters and the Heritage via other exemptions.
