  • PIT Quarterback #3
The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo says Russell Wilson “has clearly been the better quarterback” during the Steelers’ offseason.
DeFabo added that there doesn’t be much of a competition at quarterback at this time, noting that Wilson “has taken the overwhelming majority of meaningful reps, including on the final day of minicamp, when almost every veteran took off.” He also said Fields “doesn’t often shine in seven-on-seven situations,” which isn’t a great endorsement for him with training camp a month away. Both Wilson and Fields are in career-rebuilding mode after flaming out at their previous stops. Neither is going particularly high in fantasy drafts, with Wilson currently going outside of the top 24 in most best ball drafts. Fields’ rushing ability makes him a potentially high-upside fantasy stash whenever he gets a chance to start, but it sounds like Wilson has a good grip on the job heading into training camp.
  • TB Wide Receiver #17
Buccaneers signed WR Sterling Shepard to the active roster from their practice squad.
That’s a pretty sure sign that he’ll be playing a big role on Thursday night. Jalen McMillan and Trey Palmer both were injured over the last four days. It’s possible that McMillan is sent to injured reserve in a corresponding move later today. Palmer is merely in concussion protocol that he appears unlikely to clear before Thursday.
  • PIT Guard #66
Steelers signed OL Max Scharping off Washington’s practice squad.
Scharping will help provide depth with Isaac Seumalo still questionable for this week and James Daniels placed on injured reserve yesterday. The 28-year-old started for the Texans for portions of three years before spending the last two years as a backup with the Bengals.
  • DAL EDGE #90
Cowboys placed DE DeMarcus Lawrence (foot) on injured reserve.
He’ll miss the next four weeks at the very least with a foot injury that could sideline him even longer. He suffered the injury against the Giants on Thursday Night Football. With both Lawrence and Micah Parsons (ankle) likely out this week, Dallas’ pass rush is wounded ahead of Sunday night’s date with the Steelers.
  • DAL Defensive End #56
Cowboys signed DE KJ Henry off Cincinnati’s practice squad.
Henry was waived at last cuts after being drafted by the old Commanders regime in 2023, then caught on with the Bengals practice squad. He’ll provide depth for the Cowboys up front with the team placing DeMarcus Lawrence on injured reserve.
  • GB Wide Receiver #9
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reports that Christian Watson has a “mild” high-ankle sprain and is “unlikely” to land on injured reserve.
Welcome to the world of downplaying high-ankle sprains. We are now dealing with this from both the Packers (over Watson) and the Colts (over Jonathan Taylor.) What is very clear is that Watson will not be playing this week — Matt LaFleur said so on Monday. That leaves Watson essentially week-to-week going forward, with Week 6 against the Cardinals the earliest he could possibly be active. We’d bet on Week 7 or Week 8 as a more realistic recovery timetable for Watson.
  • LV Wide Receiver #17
Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vincent Bonsigore reports the Raiders are “growing open” to the idea of trading Davante Adams.
A source tells Bonsignore that the club has begun reaching out to other clubs to “gauge interest.” This has been a long time coming after the Derek Carr-Adams partnership was disintegrated by management following the 2022 season. It stands to reason that Adams will be the prize of the trading deadline, and the Raiders should probably cash in the 31-year-old for whatever they can reasonably get. Adams has a $25.3 million cap figure that other teams will have to work around, but we expect him to command a Day 2 pick at the very least.
  • SEA Tackle #70
    Seahawks signed OT Jason Peters.
Peters, 42, is playing in his 21st NFL season. He played eight games with the Seahawks in 2023, starting two before a late November injury against the Niners. Peters will likely be a rotational player on the Seattle offensive line. Pro Football Focus grades the Seahawks’ offensive line as the NFL’s fourth worst pass blocking unit through Week 4.
  • PIT Quarterback #3
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Russell Wilson’s practice participation will increase this week.
Still struggling through a severe calf injury, Wilson could see some practice reps but Justin Fields is fully expected to remain the Steelers’ quarterback. Fields has done an excellent job as Arthur Smith’s game manager, ranking as one of the NFL’s most accurate passers after struggling with accuracy issues in Chicago. Wilson’s only path to playing time would be a Fields injury.
  • IND EDGE #94
The Athletic’s James Boyd reports Colts EDGE Tyquan Lewis (elbow) will be out until at least Week 9.
Lewis sustained a serious elbow injury last week against the Steelers, and though it’s not season ending, the ailment will keep Lewis sidelined for the next month or so. The seven-year veteran had 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks this season before the injury.
  • DET Tight End #87
Sam LaPorta caught all four targets for 53 yards in the Lions’ Week 4 win over the Seahawks.
The four targets were nice considering quarterback Jared Goff attempted just 18 passes but LaPorta was held out of the end zone on a night the team scored six touchdowns. LaPorta has had a string of difficult schematic matchups considering his acumen against man coverage and relative shortcomings against zone through his first season-plus of play, which carries forward into a Week 6 matchup with the Cowboys after the team heads to their bye week in Week 5.
