Packers selected Wake Forest OL Zach Tom with the No. 140 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Tom (6'5/295) started 34 games for Wake Forest, splitting time between left tackle and center. He made first-team All-ACC in 2021 at left tackle, but size concerns will probably move him back inside at the next level. Being able to play both in a pinch will make him extra valuable to NFL teams, though, and the intelligence and versatility to excel in both spots is a valuable trait to have. While there’s not much he can do about his modest size and play strength, he has made up for it with fast feet, sound technique, and good athleticism, posting an elite 9.93 relative athletic score. He is a technician with both his hands and feet, timing and placing his strikes well to offset the lack of true explosive power, and his mirroring ability is top-notch. Unfortunately, bull rushers can knock him over, and his ability to attack defenders in the run game is lacking. That makes Tom sort of an awkward tweener, having the excellent pass-blocking skills and quickness of a tackle without the size while at the same time not being quite strong enough to play inside. If his coaches can scheme around that, Tom’s technique, movement, and intelligence will shine through.
