Welcome to the Week 9 edition of Waiver Wired for the 2021 season. Nearly at the halfway point of the longest and most chaotic season riddled with an infinite number of injuries, the wire continues to be observed and scraped for talent in order to plug any immediate holes all the while keeping one eye on the fantasy postseason. With so few impact players remaining, FAAB suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt and increased/decreased for necessity, especially when expecting a bidding war for a(ny) backfield player.

As a refresher, The Drop List consists of players who are rostered in at least 50 percent of Yahoo leagues and are no longer must-have assets, recommended additions are available in over 50 percent of Yahoo leagues, the Watch List contains in-depth notes on fringe waiver adds, and Deep Cuts includes player notes on those rostered in five percent or fewer of Yahoo leagues.

The Drop List

QB: -

RB: Derrick Henry, Alexander Mattison

WR: Henry Ruggs, Calvin Ridley, Allen Robinson

TE: -

Having broken the fifth metatarsal in his foot on Sunday, Derrick Henry will reportedly miss “6-10 weeks” and push to return if the Titans are in a tight postseason race at the end of the year. In other words, his best-case scenario leaves managers debating whether or not to play him off foot surgery for all the marbles in the most important fantasy matchup of the season. I lean towards the (realistic) expectation that he won’t return at all and would drop him for Adrian Peterson outright as a one-for-one trade-off...Dalvin Cook has handled 49-of-56 backfield touches since returning at full strength in Minnesota’s last two games, rendering Alexander Mattison useless on seven total touches behind him. Strictly a contingency option for as long as Cook is healthy, Mattison, a league-winning stash in 10-team leagues, may not be able to stay rostered on shallower benches while patching for injuries and bye weeks...There’s no way to know just how long Calvin Ridley will be out after stepping away from football to preserve his mental health. As someone who also struggled mentally during the pandemic and ultimately settled into a friend’s basement with cold water, I genuinely wish Ridley all the best and hope he comes back stronger...Henry Ruggs was charged with DUI resulting in death, a Category B felony in Nevada with a minimum of two years in state prison and a maximum of 20 years, stemming from a fatal collision at 3:39 AM Tuesday morning. It’s an ongoing investigation that could result in the end of his career...Allen Robinson followed up his season-low 12.5% target share on Justin Fields’ season-high 32 pass attempts against the Bucs with another three-catch dud for 21 yards. Robinson has not eclipsed 65 receiving yards in 10 consecutive games, scoring only one touchdown in that span, dating back to last year.

For those looking to roster the best available player(s) regardless of position, the rankings above take into account every factor from the positional lists minus players’ actual positions for both recreational and high-stakes (FFPC, NFFC, etc.) formats, the latter which have far fewer viable players available with every passing week. These are listed in the precise order I would prioritize waiver claims in those leagues ahead of Week 9. Adjust accordingly for what you need on your roster — touches, high-upside bench stashes, targets, one-week spot-starters, etc.

Contingency Top 10

QUARTERBACKS

1. Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins — Rostered in 36 percent of Yahoo leagues (Suggested 1-2% Remaining FAAB Bid)

Crashing back to Earth against a Bills defense that has limited every opponent to less than 5.0 yards per play this year, Tagovailoa should have no issues regaining form against a Texans unit creating pressure, which he’s struggled in completing 49% of his passes for four picks when faced with, at the league’s third-lowest rate. Lovie Smith’s prehistoric tendencies, shell-shocked after witnessing those meddling kids from Los Angeles utilize pre-snap motion and their running backs out wide, has also resulted in the second-fewest blitzes to add fuel to Tua’s fire. The sophomore’s four carries per game lend him sneaky rushing upside to boot.

2. Taysom Hill, Saints — Rostered in 3 percent of Yahoo Leagues (2-4%)

Reportedly “on schedule” to clear the league’s concussion protocol and return in place of Jameis Winston (torn ACL) on Sunday, Taysom Hill has already proved he’s ready for fantasy stardom in averaging 28.5 passes and 9.8 scrambles as the overall QB3, QB13, QB8, and QB11 in four starts last year. A more confident long-term option over Tagovailoa for the rest of the season, Hill is also neck and neck with Tua as the week’s top streamer since the Falcons have amassed the lowest pressure rate of any defensive unit through eight games.

3. Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers — Rostered in 11 percent of Yahoo leagues (1%)

Garoppolo had this one written into his calendar once the schedule released, knowingly averaging 38 attempts for a combined 53 points per game in his last three contests opposite Kyler Murray (ankle) and Kliff Kingsbury. Try as he might to drag this one to the finish line, even Colt McCoy (pending Murray’s status) is a penny on Sunday’s train track since the 49ers are quietly operating at the league’s third-fastest pace between plays with a lead.

4. Mike White, Jets — Rostered in 2 percent of Yahoo leagues (1%)

White, the rich man’s verson of Jake Luton, mustered a scrappy 82.2% completion rate in Sunday’s win since 76% of his passes were dumped off within nine yards of the line of scrimmage. With no rushing floor to speak of — four of his five ‘carries’ were clock-killing kneel-down situations in the final seconds — White, dependent entirely on yards after the catch, still offers a serviceable floor with volume since the Jets remain two-score road dogs (+10.5) against a Colts unit averaging a bottom-six rate of pressure on enemy quarterbacks.

Watch List: Justin Fields was blessed with his most clever game plan to date and a season-high 25.3 fantasy points as the overall QB4 because Matt Nagy was stuck watching at home after testing positive for COVID. The rookie’s outlook is simple: he’s either a QB1 with rushing upside if OC Bill Lazor is calling plays or a QB3 with little volume whenever Nagy is back on the sidelines.

RUNNING BACKS

1. Adrian Peterson, Titans — Rostered in 6 percent of Yahoo leagues (Suggested 80-90% Remaining FAAB Bid)

The Titans, scheming 28.7 running back carries per game through Week 8, inked 36-year-old Peterson for the rest of the year because he showed up to his workout “in excellent shape” following last year’s 16-game, seven-score campaign in Detroit. Surrounded by Jeremy McNichols, who has yet to record more than two carries in any game as Tennessee’s receiving back this year, and potential practice-squad call-ups in Dontrell Hilliard and D’Onta Foreman, Peterson inarguably has the clearest path to becoming an every-week starter (barring injury) among all of the options listed below, McNichols included. The rich man’s James Conner as an early-down workhorse with multiple touchdowns in his range of outcomes, Peterson deserves the bag from managers looking to replace Derrick Henry (foot surgery) in a one-for-one trade-off on waivers since the Titans have the second-softest projected schedule from Week 9 on. I’m approaching Peterson with the same ferocity as Elijah Mitchell on waivers in Week 2 even though I actually expect McNichols to out-perform Peterson in PPR leagues in the immediate future against the Rams.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 10-team leagues

2. Boston Scott, Eagles – Rostered in 21 percent of Yahoo leagues (25-30%)

Anyone who rushed to waivers for Kenneth Gainwell last week didn’t necessarily get it wrong; how often will the Eagles be in a position to pad a multi-score lead? Scott was deployed as the direct replacement for Miles Sanders (ankle, IR), though, out-touching practice-squad call-up Jordan Howard 7-0 in the first quarter and 9-4 in the first half. Gainwell was allowed to take home the scraps with 12 of his 13 touches occurring in the final 15 minutes once Philadelphia leaped out to 38-0 lead. Assuming Nick Sirianni continues riding the team’s league-high run play rate from neutral game script for a fourth consecutive game, Scott is in a terrific position to surge against the Chargers (Football Outsiders’ No. 32 rush defense DVOA) and Broncos (No. 26) until Sanders is eligible to return in Week 11. I would prioritize Scott over Adrian Peterson if Sanders is on your roster since that would cement a touch-based RB2 in your lineup no matter how Sanders’ ankle injury shakes out.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 10-team leagues while Miles Sanders is out

3. Jeremy McNichols, Titans – Rostered in 10 percent of Yahoo leagues (15-20%)

McNichols, participating in his second year with the Titans, has registered two-plus carries in a one-score game just once across 25 appearances with Tennessee — unsurprisingly when Derrick Henry needed to be spelled between plays while plowing through Houston for 212 yards last year. The 25-year-old could still lend a high floor/ceiling combo for PPR leagues a la J.D. McKissic if the team’s current 48% run play rate in neutral game script (second-overall) swings in favor of their passing game moving forward. Don’t waste your time with McNichols in standard leagues since his value is derived exclusively from receptions. As mentioned above, I consider McNichols the stronger one-week play over Adrian Peterson against the Rams but would only unload my FAAB for the latter since he projects as a workhorse beyond this week.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team PPR leagues

4. Carlos Hyde, Jaguars – Rostered in 7 percent of Yahoo leagues (10-12%)

Urban Meyer’s nostalgia peaked once James Robinson (ankle) exited after eight snaps on Sunday, allowing the coach to play Hyde, his Ohio State brethren, for a season-high 66% snaps and 15-of-23 backfield touches. Hyde was involved over Dare Ogunbowale (15 snaps) as a receiver, too, soaking up 8-of-11 backfield targets for a 14.8% target share in Jacksonville’s four-score deficit. McNichols is the preferred option for the rest of the season, but Hyde is the better one-week filler as a touch-based RB2 (even against Buffalo) if Robinson is ruled out.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team leagues if James Robinson is ruled out

5. Ty Johnson, Jets - Rostered in 5 percent of Yahoo leagues (8-10%)

Michael Carter warrants our attention wherever applicable since he’s handled 26-of-36 running back carries and a 24.9% target share (!) in place of Tevin Coleman the past two weeks. But Mike White’s league-low (albeit electrifying) 5.2 air yards per attempt in that stretch have quietly propelled Ty Johnson to RB21 and RB9 finishes since the former has targeted New York’s running backs at an absurd 46.7% clip. Slide Johnson ahead of Hyde if James Robinson is cleared.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team PPR leagues

6. JaMycal Hasty, 49ers - Rostered in 2 percent of Yahoo leagues (1-2%)

Hasty is only here because Elijah Mitchell was limited for Tuesday’s practice with a rib injury. Note that Hasty has out-touched Trey Sermon 11-0 behind Mitchell (36) since San Francisco’s bye, seeing Sermon log more special teams snaps (22) than offensive ones (0) in that span.

Recommendation: Both should be stashed in 12-team leagues

Watch List: As expected, Salvon Ahmed was used sparingly behind Myles Gaskin, handling eight touches compared to Gaskin’s team-high 15. He remains a viable stash only to be deployed if Gaskin were injured while Malcolm Brown (IR) is out... Josh Jacobs reportedly avoided a serious chest injury before the bye but could still be sidelined against New York. Peyton Barber, healthy scratched in Week 7, would likely run on early downs and cede receiving work to Kenyan Drake if Jacobs is sidelined.

Deep Cuts: Jaret Patterson handled a season-high 11 carries against Denver but odds are it was only to get Antonio Gibson (fractured shin) into the bye as soon as possible. I would not expect him to split touches with J.D. McKissic and Gibson in Week 10...As noted above, Jordan Howard didn’t receive a single touch in the first quarter but did ultimately out-carry Kenneth Gainwell 12-1 through three quarters. I don’t know when you would be forced to start Howard, but he does have thin touchdown(s)-or-bust appeal... Darrel ‘The Mentor’ Williams shockingly split carries with Derrick Gore 13-11 on Monday night, sharing touches inside the 10-yard line with two apiece. Williams is still the superior fantasy option since he earned 6-of-7 running back targets in Kansas City’s run-and-dump offense, but The MentGore did enough on his 16 snaps (20%) to garner RB4 consideration while Clyde Edwards-Helaire, eligible to return from injured reserve this week, remains out...D’Onta Foreman is the $1 pivot if you believe 36-year-old Adrian Peterson breaks down.

WIDE RECEIVERS

1. DeVante Parker, Dolphins – Rostered in 36 percent of Yahoo leagues (Suggested 30-40% Remaining FAAB Bid)

Averaging 8.6 targets and a 23.7% target share in five full games this year, Parker, clearly healthy after logging a season-high 91% of Miami’s snaps in Week 8, is far and away the top pickup for shallow leagues since he’s seen at least seven targets in every start this season. It bodes well that the Dolphins have passed the ball at the league’s 10th-highest rate in neutral game script since Tagovailoa returned from injured reserve the past three games.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 10-team leagues

2. Van Jefferson, Rams – Rostered in 13 percent of Yahoo leagues (25-30%)

With DeSean Jackson officially released, note that Jefferson has logged 89% of Los Angeles’ snaps in the last two weeks, most recently running as many routes (32) as Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods against Houston. Jefferson has undoubtedly emerged as a weekly WR3/4 from for the rest of the year since he’ll be glued to the field for every down with negligent competition after rookie Tutu Atwell was placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 10-team leagues

3. Hunter Renfrow, Raiders – Rostered in 43 percent of Yahoo leagues (15-20%)

Las Vegas’ current leader in receptions (38) and the overall WR35 in fantasy points per game, Renfrow is suddenly eyeing a WR2 ceiling with additional opportunity since he has yet to lead the Raiders in routes run in any game this year.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 10-team PPR leagues

4. Rashod Bateman, Ravens – Rostered in 31 percent of Yahoo leagues (12-15%)

Presumably dropped for replacements that could ease the pain over Baltimore’s bye, reminder Bateman averaged an 18.2% target share across his first two performances off injured reserve. Sammy Watkins’ (hamstring) pending return could force Bateman out of two-wide sets entirely, but odds are the veteran returns in the slot since that’s where he averaged 17.1 routes per game across three seasons with the Chiefs.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team leagues

5. Jamison Crowder, Jets – Rostered in 19 percent of Yahoo leagues (6-8%)

Crowder has earned at least six targets in all four games he’s been available for this year, running the second-most routes behind Denzel Mims (44-40) in place of Corey Davis (hip) on Sunday. Even if Davis is able to turn around for Thursday’s contest against the Colts, note that Crowder led the team in routes run alongside Davis the week prior.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team leagues if Corey Davis is ruled out

6. Jamal Agnew, Jaguars – Rostered in 2 percent of Yahoo leagues (8-10%)

Laugh if you must, but Agnew, supposedly the team’s “best separator”, has led the Jaguars with a 20.3% target share in three games sans D.J. Chark (ankle, IR). Averaging a lukewarm 9.2 yards per catch in that span, Agnew doesn’t exactly offer an enticing ceiling but does provide 8.3 targets per game to patch for bye weeks as a high-floor PPR WR3/4 wherever waivers are bare.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team PPR leagues

7. Michael Gallup, Cowboys – Rostered in 44 percent of Yahoo leagues (1-2%)

Dallas opened Gallup’s 21-day window to return last week but he was unable to turn around for Sunday’s win over Minnesota. He remains a long-term speculative add since Dak Prescott‘s season-high in pass attempts (58) occurred in the only game Gallup was available for this year, albeit against Tampa Bay. There’s an easy bear case to make against his ceiling since the Cowboys could simply keep running the ball at the league’s 11th-highest rate in one-score situations with Prescott under center.

Recommendation: Should be stashed in 12-team leagues

8. Bryan Edwards, Raiders – Rostered in 11 percent of Yahoo leagues (1-2%)

With only Hunter Renfrow, Zay Jones, and Edwards available at wide receiver — Javon Wims, Dillon Stoner, and D.J. Turner are also log-jammed on the practice squad — the Raiders are expected to call DeSean Jackson, John Brown, or another deep threat that could easily usurp Edwards the moment they arrive. Yet to record 90 receiving yards despite leading the team in routes run this year, there’s a real chance Edwards’ volume does not grow in the slightest.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in deep 12-team leagues

9. Quez Watkins, Eagles – Rostered in 2 percent of Yahoo leagues (1-2%)

Even in being moved to the bench with the starters in Sunday’s blowout, Watkins recorded a season-high 89% of the Eagles’ offensive snaps in place of Jalen Reagor (ankle). Consider him a deep league opportunity-based flier since it could all go up in flames after bidding due to Philadelphia’s league-high run play rate in neutral game script in their last three performances.

Recommendation: Should be rostered in 12-team leagues

Watch List: Darius Slayton is again in position to start from two-wide sets since Sterling Shepard (hamstring), Kadarius Toney (thumb), and Dante Pettis (shoulder) were all banged up mid-game. With Kenny Golladay (knee) trying to return for Week 9, too, we genuinely won’t know Slayton’s outlook until New York’s injury reports tell the tale...Rondale Moore would be the pivot if DeAndre Hopkins (hamstring) can’t go Sunday, but it won’t matter if it’s Colt McCoy, rather than Kyler Murray (ankle, week-to-week), under center...The Jets reportedly refused to trade Denzel Mims to any inquiring teams during the deadline after the sophomore was finally dispersed for a team-high in routes run (44) in place of Corey Davis (hip) last week. Coach Robert Saleh praised Mims for his efforts on Tuesday but he’s obviously impossible to trust as a WR4/5 if Davis is active Thursday night...With Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring) expected to be activated and Allen Lazard already cleared from the COVID list, the Packers will likely lean on an increased rate of 11 personnel to get by in life without Robert Tonyan (torn ACL). Assuming all are active against the Chiefs, I rank them Davante Adams > Lazard > MVS > Randall Cobb for Week 9...Gabriel Davis recorded a season-high 11.9% target share sans Dawson Knox but did not experience a role change around it, running 19 routes on Josh Allen’s 52 dropbacks, similar to Davis’ 16.8 routes per game in Weeks 1-6 while Knox was healthy...Tajae Sharpe replaced Calvin Ridley on Sunday with a 22.2% target share but, because he’s Tajae Sharpe, amassed 5/58 receiving in a floor outing. Sometimes the best response is no response at all...As it stands, Zay Jones is the only available receiver on Las Vegas’ active roster behind Hunter Renfrow and Bryan Edwards.

Deep Leagues: Zach Pascal recorded season-highs in snaps (75, 94%) and targets (8, 15.6%) without T.Y. Hilton (concussion) and Parris Campbell (foot) against Tennessee. Like Jordan Howard and Tajae Sharpe, I can’t imagine being in a position to start Pascal outside of 14-team leagues since he has yet to achieve 50 receiving yards in any game this year. He’ll at least be in the same role Thursday night if you’re desperate...Marcus Johnson ran the second-most routes for the Titans in place of Julio Jones (hamstring). Sunday night’s uptempo affair against the Rams actually puts Johnson in a terrific position to spike a ceiling performance in deeper leagues and Showdown slates since the Titans’ only chance of matching the Rams point-for-point is attacking them through the air.

TIGHT ENDS

1. Dan Arnold, Jaguars — Rostered in 5 percent of Yahoo leagues (Suggested 10-15% Remaining FAAB Bid)

With 14 days and a 12-hour flight back from London to plot intricate layers into Jacksonville’s offense moving forward, Urban Meyer maniacally laughed and allowed Arnold to run a season-high 43 routes on Trevor Lawrence’s 58 dropbacks. Mirroring Jamal Agnew in routes as the team’s de facto No. 2 receiver on Sunday, Arnold’s 18.5% target share (and 18.2% without D.J. Chark) should arguably cement him as a fringe-TE1 for as long as he’s healthy. I consider Pat Freiermuth the stronger option for Week 9 only if Eric Ebron (hamstring) remains out.

2. Pat Freiermuth, Steelers — Rostered in 11 percent of Yahoo leagues (10-12%)

Freiermuth had already recorded season-highs in snaps (45, 60%) and targets (7, 17.5%) in Pittsburgh’s first game without JuJu Smith-Schuster before the bye, but Eric Ebron’s sudden hamstring injury in practice mid-week afforded the rookie fresh career-highs in target share (20.5%) and routes run (27, 69.2%). For those with an eye towards the homestretch, I prefer Arnold > Freiermuth long-term as the former has no surrounding competition for usage.

3. Albert Okwuegbunam, Broncos — Rostered in 0 percent of Yahoo leagues (1%)

As inconsistent as the league’s policies both on the field and off have been, the one constant has been players unable to turn around for kick-off if they land on the COVID list that week. Hence why Albert O, who accrued a 25% target share and team-high four end zone targets in his lone spot start for Noah Fant (COVID) last year, is suddenly on this list. I rank them Albert O > Arnold > Freiermuth for Sunday if Fant is ruled out.

4. Tommy Sweeney, Bills — Rostered in 3 percent of Yahoo leagues (1%)

Sweeney didn’t exactly earn targets (4, 9.5%) at a Dawson Knox-like rate in his first full spot-start at tight end, but Sweeney was utilized as if he was Knox, running a route on 75% of Josh Allen’s dropbacks against Miami. Sweeney is a viable usage-based streamer for however long Knox (day-to-day) remains sidelined following hand surgery.

Watch List: Reminder Foster Moreau logged 100% of Las Vegas’ snaps at tight end without Darren Waller (ankle), registering a 17.6% target share and 6/60/1 receiving on 32 routes (on 37 dropbacks). Waller was considered day-to-day during the bye.

Deep Leagues: Marcedes Lewis replaced Robert Tonyan (torn ACL) on Thursday night, running 14 routes to Josiah Deguara‘s seven off the bench. Odds are the Packers run more 11 personnel to feature Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Randall Cobb intermittently rather than plugging in Lewis for Tonyan’s red-zone role.

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

1. Miami Dolphins – Rostered in 3 percent of Yahoo leagues

Davis Mills. (Dolphins also face the Jets, Panthers, and Giants in four of their next five games.)

2. New Orleans Saints – Rostered in 47 percent of Yahoo leagues

Top-five in every advanced metric as it pertains to stopping opposing passing attacks, the Saints should have no issues penetrating Atlanta’s o-line, which has allowed a league-high 43 quarterback hits in seven games.

3. Las Vegas Raiders – Rostered in 10 percent of Yahoo leagues

The Fightin’ Bisaccia’s have recorded the league’s third-highest pressure rate and an NFL-high 11 sacks in their two inaugural games minus Jon Gruden.

Watch List:

KICKERS

Only a fool wouldn’t pass the ball to Michael Jordan in his prime, so it only makes sense that I pull each week’s kicker streamers from Denny Carter’s column and #adjust them accordingly. For in-depth analysis, you can read his entire piece here:

1. Jason Sanders, Dolphins – Rostered in 23 percent of Yahoo leagues

2. Michael Badgley, Colts – Rostered in 4 percent of Yahoo leagues

3. Dustin Hopkins, Chargers – Rostered in 14 percent of Yahoo leagues
