Best-Ball Draft Strategy
Best ball fantasy football leagues – for those who haven’t been frantically drafting teams since the day after the Bucs took home the Lombardi trophy – remove the most excruciating part of our little game: start-sit decisions.
Best ball formats giveth and, naturally, taketh away. We’re working without a waiver wire in best ball leagues, meaning we can’t toss aside the late-round running back or wideout who proves useless for our fantasy squad. The waiver wire is, in many ways, an extension of your bench in redraft leagues; you can dump players left and right, hoping to pick up an every-week starter from the trash heap. Not so in best ball, where we’re stuck with fantasy-irrelevant players for the long haul. These players become a blight on our bench
Stacking
The path to upside in any fantasy format runs through stacking quarterbacks with their pass catchers. Best-ball drafters can take a cue from daily fantasy winners who emerge from the field – large or small – thanks to pairing receivers, tight ends and even running backs with their quarterbacks. This maneuvering gives us access not just to the fantasy points produced by a QB who goes wild, but the players benefiting from the signal caller’s truckloads of yardage and touchdowns. If you’re confident a QB is going to have a good day – or in best ball, a good season – then someone catching his passes is also going to pile on the stats. I can confirm this is not rocket science.
