Draft Profile: Devin Funchess

Throughout draft season, Josh Norris will highlight specific plays that encapsulate a prospect’s evaluation. Josh’s philosophy focuses on where players win and what role they could possibly fill for a team, rather than their flaws or grading their skills against a checklist. Feel free to leave feedback or your own evaluation in the comments below.

Michigan WR Devin Funchess

Junior - 6’5/230 lbs

The question I’ve received the most is “what position will Funchess play in the NFL?” The answer is pass catcher.

I do not answer with a specific position title, since on the football field titles do not matter. How a player is utilized and where their skills fit, that is important. For Funchess, he has shown plenty of receiving ability out as a boundary receiver as well as in the slot.

Funchess flashes a tremendous “big receiver” game, meaning winning at the catch point in single coverage and in contested situations. He has seemingly improved in these areas this year, but exposures exist where he is not consistent (drops) and is not always reliable.

Funchess has plenty of vertical speed and can be used to stress defenses downfield, much like Kelvin Benjamin and Mike Evans. What separates Funchess a bit is he can also be successful in tight spaces, like in the slot on quick passes to pick up yards after the catch.

Hopefully development continues, but Funchess has the makings of a receiver worthy of being a focal point in an NFL offense.
