The San Antonio Spurs selected Stephon Castle with the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
During his lone season at UConn, Castle was able to help guide the team to a second straight national championship. Despite standing 6-foot-6, Castle was a point guard in high school, though he played as more of a shooting guard for the Huskies. However, by declining workouts with teams that have established point guards, he made it clear how he wants to be used in the NBA. In 34 games for UConn, he averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.8 steals in 27.0 minutes per game. He wasn’t effective as a shooter (26.7% on 3-pointers), but he should be able to provide playmaking and on-ball defense as a rookie. Landing in San Antonio suits Castle, especially with his desire to play point guard in the NBA. The team hasn’t appeared to be sold on Tre Jones as a long-term answer at the position, and an early-season experiment with Jeremy Sochan did not work. Castle will require some patience, but he has the talent to flourish alongside Victor Wembanyama.
