Spencer Arrighetti was diagnosed with a broken right thumb on Monday after being hit with a line drive while playing catch during batting practice.
Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters Arrighetti was playing catch in left field while the Mariners were taking batting practice when he was struck on his pitching hand by a line drive in what can only be described as a freak accident. The 25-year-old right-hander obviously won’t make his next scheduled start on Friday against the Angels. The Astros failed to divulge how much time they expect him to miss in a team statement on the incident, but fantasy managers should anticipate a lengthy absence. It’s a crushing blow to Houston’s razor-thin starting pitching depth. A.J. Blubaugh and Colton Gordon are among the primary candidates at Triple-A Sugar Land to fill his rotation spot.

Braves sent C Chadwick Tromp outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The 31-year-old backstop had been designated for assignment on Thursday, but he passed through waivers unclaimed. As expected, he’ll continue to serve as extra catching depth for the Braves at the Triple-A level.

James Schiano discusses the improvement that Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has made on offense in recent weeks, including the .455 batting average and 1.409 OPS he has posted in his last five games.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #22
Garrett Whitlock (knee) navigated a scoreless inning in his first minor league rehab appearance at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
It wasn’t the smoothest of innings, as Whitlock gave up a hit and a couple of walks and threw just 10 of his 21 pitches for strikes, but he managed to escape without any damage being done. His fastball topped out at 97-mph in the outing. It’s unclear if the Red Sox will want to see him once more in a minor league setting or if he’ll be cleared to return following Saturday’s appearance.
  • ATH Shortstop #5
Jacob Wilson (shoulder) went 0-for-2 with an RBI and a walk in his first minor league rehab game at Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday.
In a game in which the Aviators scored 21 runs on 19 hits, Wilson missed out on most of the fun. He did draw a walk with the bases loaded in the first inning, but that was it for him. It’s unclear how many games the A’s want him to play in before he’s cleared to return. Wilson has been sidelined since May 11 due to a left shoulder subluxation.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #60
Cubs signed RHP Andrew Wantz to a minor league contract.
The 30-year-old right-hander elected free agency from the Rays on Tuesday rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham. Wantz allowed five runs over 1 2/3 innings in his lone appearance in the big leagues this season. He’ll add extra bullpen depth for the Cubs at Triple-A Iowa.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #57
Shane Bieber struggled in a minor league rehab start at Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, giving up three runs on six hits across 2 2/3 innings.
The 31-year-old right-hander struck out three batters in the contest and didn’t issue a base on balls. The important note is that he got up to 59 pitches (40 strikes) in the game. He’s going to need at least one additional rehab start after this one and the Jays may want to see him have some better results in a minor league setting before bringing him back into the rotation mix.
  • PIT 2nd Baseman #5
The Pirates still haven’t provided any update on Brandon Lowe since he left Sunday’s game in the ninth inning after fouling a ball off his leg.
Manager Don Kelly said there wasn’t any news in his interview after the game, and the Pirates haven’t revealed anything since, even though X-rays were surely long since taken. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad, but those forced to make a call on whether to start Lowe this week are in a bind. A Monday afternoon update seems likely.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #43
The Mets intend to have Huascar Brazobán start Sunday’s game against the Padres.
Sean Manaea will likely again function as a bulk guy after doing a great job Monday against the Mariners. Brazobán thus far has allowed four runs over six innings in five appearances as an opener.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #17
Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in the Dodgers’ 9-2 win over the Angels on Saturday.
Ohtani started the first inning with a single and scored on a two-run homer by Andy Pages. The Dodgers would hit around the order in the frame, putting up nine runs, including a two-run homer by Ohtani. The 31-year-old star is up to 11 homers while slashing .300/.417/.524 with 43 runs scored, 35 RBI, and six steals across 279 plate appearances.
  • LAA Shortstop #9
Zach Neto went 1-for-4 with a solo homer against the Dodgers on Saturday.
The Angels put up a run in the first inning, then did not reach base again until the ninth, when Neto took Jack Dreyer deep for a solo homer. It was the 11th of the season for Neto while hitting .232/.340/.436 with 43 runs scored, 28 RBI, and 10 steals across 282 plate appearances.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #18
Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run with four strikeouts over eight innings in a win over the Angels on Saturday.
Yamamoto gave up one run on two hits in the first inning. The pressure was off after he was spotted nine runs in the bottom of the first. He went on to toss seven more no-hit innings as the Angels weren’t able to do anything against the 27-year-old right-hander after the opening frame. He struck out four. Yamamoto will take a 2.68 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and a 73/15 K/BB ratio across 77 1/3 innings into a start against the White Sox in Chicago next Saturday.
