Kyle Hart failed to make it through the first Sunday against the Cubs, walking four and giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning.
And the Padres ended up winning anyway. Hart threw 39 pitches, 18 of them strikes, before finally being yanked. He should stay in the rotation for now and face the Rockies next weekend, but he’s in line to lose his spot after Yu Darvish returns.

Joey Loperfido was scratched from the Blue Jays’ starting lineup on Friday evening due to illness.
The 26-year-old outfielder attempted to give it a go, but felt ill once again on Friday evening so the Jays made the wise decision to pull him from the lineup. Myles Straw will start in his place in left field and will bat ninth for the Blue Jays against Luis Severino and the Athletics on Friday evening in West Sacramento.
Players to watch in MLB All-Star Futures Game
James Schiano spotlights the rising stars to watch in this weekend's 2025 All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta.
  • TOR 2nd Baseman #0
Blue Jays’ skipper John Schneider told reporters on Friday that Andrés Giménez (ankle) is considered week-to-week.
The 26-year-old infielder has been doing treatment for his injured left ankle, but it sounds like this is going to end up being a long-term issue. As of now there’s still no clear timeline for a potential return to the Jays’ active roster.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #93
Yimi García (ankle) threw a successful bullpen session in Toronto on Friday.
The 34-year-old hurler is working his way back from a left ankle sprain. The expectation is that he should be ready to return as the Jays are coming out of the All-Star break, though he may need a tune-up or two in a minor league game before being ready to return.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #44
Bowden Francis (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.
It’ll be the first one that the 29-year-old hurler has thrown since landing on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement in mid-June. There’s still no timeline on when Francis may be ready to rejoin the team’s starting rotation, but this will at least be a small step in the right direction.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #73
Hunter Dobbins was removed from Friday night’s start against the Rays due to an apparent right knee injury.
Dobbins sustained the injury while covering first base on a ground ball to the right side of the infield in the second inning. He’ll head for further evaluation. The 25-year-old hurler wound up allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out a pair in his first start back off of the injured list.
  • ARI Relief Pitcher #18
Diamondbacks’ right-hander Shelby Miller (forearm) is getting a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister.
A second opinion doesn’t always mean impending doom and another Tommy John surgery, but more times than not that is the eventual outcome. Right now, the 34-year-old hurler is shelved with a right forearm strain, but we’ll see if the diagnosis shifts after he gets his second opinion. The Diamondbacks should have an update on his status in the coming days.
  • TOR Center Fielder #5
Daulton Varsho (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Monday.
The 29-year-old outfielder is expected to need a week’s worth of games before he’s ready to rejoin the Blue Jays, which means that he would miss the first series coming out of the All-Star break. If he looks sharp through Thursday though, don’t be surprised if the Jays opt to bring him back right away. He has been sidelined since the end of May due to a left hamstring strain.
  • FA Shortstop #39
Sergio Alcántara has elected free agency.
After being sent outright to Triple-A Sacamento on Tuesday, the 29-year-old infielder chose to refuse the assignment and will instead try his luck on the open market. Way more of an asset with the glove than with the bat, he’ll try to find an opportunity that’s better suited to his skillset.
  • LAD Right Fielder #37
Teoscar Hernández (foot) returned to the Dodgers’ starting lineup on Friday night.
The 32-year-old slugger returns to action after missing the last three games due to soreness in his left foot. He’ll start in right field and bat fifth for the Dodgers on Friday evening against Logan Webb and the Giants.
  • ATL Left Fielder #20
Marcell Ozuna is absent from the Braves’ starting lineup for Friday night’s tilt against the Cardinals.
It’s strange to see Ozuna on the pine against an opposing left-hander in Matthew Liberatore, but that’s where we are at right now with the slumping 34-year-old slugger. Sean Murphy will function as the team’s designated hitter on Friday night and will bat cleanup for the Braves.
