    Mariners released OF Mitch Haniger.
Drafted by the Brewers in 2012, Haniger debuted with the Diamondbacks, who acquired him in a trade for Gerardo Parra, in 2016. He was involved in another high-profile trade as the Mariners acquired him along with Jean Segura for Ketel Marte and Taijuan Walker prior to the 2017 season. Haniger spent six years in Seattle, where he made the All-Star team in 2018. After opting out of the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, Haniger came back and hit .253 with 39 home runs and 100 RBI in 2021. Now 34, Haniger has struggled in the three seasons since 2021 and is currently out with a shoulder injury. Despite his release, he’s still set to collect $15.5 million this year,. It’s fair to wonder if this is the end of the line for him.

Reds designated OF Stuart Fairchild for assignment.
The move opens up a spot on the active roster for Jacob Hurtubise. Fairchild will now hit waivers, and a team looking for a potential bat off the bench could show interest. It’s just as likely — if not more so — that he goes unclaimed and reports to Triple-A Louisville.
  • CIN Center Fielder #12
Reds placed OF Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list with a calf injury.
Hays will see his first season with the Reds begin on a dour note. The 29-year-old’s status is still up in the air, but he won’t be eligible to return until the middle of April.
  • CIN Third Baseman #7
Spencer Steer (shoulder) will not open the season on the 10-day injured list.
Steer is still unlikely to play Opening Day, but the Reds instead place Austin Hays on the injured list with a calf injury. Obviously it’s a positive sign that the Reds are confident enough in Steer being back relatively soon to not shelf him, but fantasy managers will want to make sure they see the 27-year-old in the lineup before putting him into theirs.
  • BOS Catcher #38
Seby Zavala will begin the season with Triple-A Worcester.
Zavala exercises an upward mobility clause; essentially placing him on waivers and if anyone was willing to add him to the 40-man roster, he would head to that team. No one made that claim, so Zavala will be org depth in Triple-A.
  • DET Left Fielder #11
Tigers signed OF Ben Gamel to a minor league contract.
Gamel was released by the Astros Saturday, and he finds a new home shortly after. He’ll likely head to Triple-A Toledo, and a good showing there could give him a chance to help Detroit off the bench this spring.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #43
Rays recalled RHP Hunter Bigge from Triple-A Durham.
Bigge gets the nod to take Shane McClanahan’s spot on the roster as expected, with McClanahan on the IL due to his triceps injury. Bigge will be a multi-inning option for Tampa Bay to begin the campaign.
  • TB Left Fielder #1
Rays placed OF Richie Palacios on the 10-day injured list with a right ring finger fracture.
Palacios was expected to be a bench option for the Rays, but instead will miss at least the first two weeks of the season with the fracture. With the 27-year-old on the shelf, the Rays recalled Kameron Misner from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #18
Rays placed LHP Shane McClanahan on the 15-day injured list with left triceps inflammation.
There’s no timetable as to when McClanahan will be able to return, but reports indicate that the injury isn’t believed to be a long-term setback. Hunter Bigge was recalled from Durham to take McClanahan’s spot on the roster.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #48
Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Marlins are acquiring RHP Tyler Phillips from the Phillies.
Phillips was designated for assignment Sunday. The 27-year-old will be a multi-inning option for Miami to open the year, but even if he was a starter, he’d be a player to stay away from in all eligible formats. Obviously the ones he’s not eligible for, too.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #31
Max Scherzer is expected to start Saturday against the Orioles.
Scherzer is “trending in the right direction” according to manager John Schneider. The 40-year-old right-hander has been dealing with a sore thumb, but he appears to be ready to role for his first — possibly only — season with the Blue Jays.
