Wilyer Abreu’s first hit of the of the spring was a solo homer Saturday against the Rays.
Abreu has been struggling since returning from a lengthy absence due to illness, but the homer makes him 1-for-16. The Red Sox appear willing to deal with a slow start offensively in order to have their Gold Glove right fielder in the Opening Day lineup.

Lucas Giolito (hamstring) fired 2 1/3 scoreless innings on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Worcester.
Giolito struck out two and allowed a pair of baserunners, throwing 51 pitches (28 strikes) in his first rehab outing. The 30-year-old righty is working his way back from a left hamstring strain that he suffered last month and is trending towards making his long-awaited Red Sox debut at some point in mid-April.
  • NYM First Baseman #20
Pete Alonso went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBI on Wednesday, leading the Mets to a 6-5 win over the Marlins in an 11-inning marathon.
Alonso opened the scoring with an RBI double in the opening frame before walloping a clutch game-tying homer in the eighth inning that wound up sending the contest to extra innings. The 30-year-old slugger recorded three extra-base hits, including a 415-foot dinger off Marlins reliever Calvin Faucher, with exit velocities over 113 mph. It’s only happened five other times in the Statcast era since 2015, according to MLB.con’s Sarah Langs. The Mets are struggling a bit offensively, but Alonso is completely locked in at the moment.
  • MIA Shortstop #9
Xavier Edwards went 4-for-6 with an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday’s extra-inning loss to the Mets.
Edwards has just two thefts through seven games to open the regular season after stating that he’d like to steal 60-plus bases this year. The 25-year-old speedster capped off an impressive four-hit performance during Wednesday’s extra-inning tractor pull with a run-scoring single in the 11th inning that pulled the Marlins within a run at the time. It was the type of multi-hit effort that figures to get him going in the right direction.
  • NYM Third Baseman #27
Mark Vientos went 0-for-5 in Wednesday’s extra-inning win over the Marlins.
It’s been a tough week for Vientos. His early-season struggles at the dish continued during Wednesday’s extra-inning marathon at loanDepot park when he made a costly throwing error that led to a run crossing the plate. His ongoing issues come on the heels of Mets manager Carlos Mendoza speaking to him after he failed to run out a ground ball during Tuesday’s showdown against the Marlins. It’s way too early for fantasy managers to overreact, but his latest hitless performance leaves him batting .083 (2-for-24) with one RBI through six games. It’s not great.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #43
Huascar Brazobán recorded a two-out save in the 11th inning of Wednesday’s contest against the Marlins.
Brazobán got the call to protect a one-run lead with the tying and go-ahead runs on-base in the 11th inning on Wednesday’s marathon against his former team and managed to get out of the jam. He got Jonah Bride to fly out to right field before freezing Otto Lopez to end it. The 35-year-old figures to be used in high-leverage spots, but is unlikely to garner more than a handful of save chances over the course of the year.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #35
Clay Holmes was charged with two runs – one earned – over 4 2/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Holmes dealt with plenty of traffic on the basepaths but managed to hold the Marlins to just a pair of runs, striking out six and only handing out a pair of free passes in the process. The concerning variable here is that he generated only six swinging strikes with his six-pitch mix on 85 pitches (55 strikes). The reliever-turned-starter has allowed five runs – three earned – with a 10/6 K/BB ratio across 9 1/3 innings in a pair of starts to open the year. It’s too early in the year for fantasy managers to panic, but Holmes hasn’t exactly dominated coming out of the gate. He’s in line for a rematch against the Marlins on Tuesday at Citi Field.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #55
Connor Gillispie struck out six and allowed one run over five innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Mets.
Gillispie served up a run-scoring double to Pete Alonso in the opening frame, but managed to stifle New York’s offense over his final four innings of work. He generated 11 swinging strikes and finished with a near-elite 37 percent CSW. It was an extremely encouraging performance for the unheralded 27-year-old rookie, who is getting an extended opportunity in Miami’s rotation. There’s some streaming appeal here for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues when he faces off against the Mets on Tuesday in a rematch at Citi Field.
  • MIN Center Fielder #12
Harrison Bader’s third homer of the year was a three-run shot off Sean Burke as the Twins topped the White Sox 6-1 on Wednesday.
Through 2024, Bader averaged one homer every 36 plate appearances in his career. This season, he has three in 16 plate appearances. The two the last two days have both been three-run blasts. We wouldn’t suggest getting too excited, but since the hot start could lead to full-time at-bats for a spell and he’s a quality basestealer, he might offer some short-term mixed-league value.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #49
Pablo López limited the White Sox to one run and four hits over seven innings in a victory Wednesday.
Brooks Baldwin’s homer broke up the shutout bid in the seventh. The remaining hits López allowed were all singles, and he struck out five. Next up for him is a start versus the Royals, and he’s 5-1 with a 2.50 ERA and a 45/4 K/BB in six career starts against Kansas City.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #59
Sean Burke was tagged for six runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Twins on Wednesday.
Burke, who threw six scoreless innings against the Angels on Opening Day, gave up two homers and recorded just one strikeout today. He also took a hard shot off his right knee on a Matt Wallner comebacker, though that didn’t seem to factor into his departure. He’s due to face the Guardians next time out.
