Phillies optioned C Garrett Stubbs to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Stubbs will begin the 2025 season in the minors, which means Rafael Marchan will be the backup catcher to JT Realmuto to begin the campaign.

Cal Quantrill was obliterated in Thursday night’s loss to the Phillies, surrendering nine runs on nine hits over his 3 1/3 innings of work.
Quantrill didn’t walk or strike out a batter in the abbreviated outing. He served up three home runs in the opening inning — to Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Max Kepler — and also gave up a solo blast to Bryce Harper in the third inning. The 30-year-old hurler got just three swings and misses on 53 pitches on the night, posting a miserable CSW of only 17 percent. This is the type of outing that could get him designated for assignment on Friday morning. If he sticks around, he’ll carry a 6.04 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and an 85/35 K/BB ratio (117 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Cubs in Chicago.
Top prospect Tong 'an electric starting pitcher'
Eric Samulski details what fantasy baseball managers can expect from starting pitcher Jonah Tong in his MLB debut Friday night against the Marlins, sharing why the 22-year-old stud should be added in all league formats.
  • CWS 3rd Baseman #20
Miguel Vargas (wrist) will undergo an MRI exam after suffering a left wrist contusion during Thursday evening’s battle against the Yankees.
Vargas reached to catch a throw from third baseman Curtis Mead at first base and his glove collided with the leg of Aaron Judge who was running to first base. It’s unclear whether or not Vargas will require an extended absence and a trip to the injured list. The White Sox will have an update on his status — and a possible roster move — after they get the results of Friday’s imaging.
  • FA 2nd Baseman #46
Buddy Kennedy has elected free agency.
Rather than accepting the outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City, the 26-year-old infielder will explore the open market instead. Kennedy has gone just 2-for-29 (.069) with one RBI and an 8/2 K/BB ratio over 32 plate appearances with the Phillies, Blue Jays and Dodgers this season.
  • CWS 3rd Baseman #20
Miguel Vargas was removed from Thursday night’s battle against the Yankees due to an apparent wrist injury.
Vargas was attempting to corral a throw at first base when Yankees’ slugger Aaron Judge ran into his arm and bent back his wrist. The 25-year-old infielder appeared to be in a significant amount of pain afterwards and after consulting with the training staff he was lifted from the game. He’ll presumably head for imaging just to make sure there’s no structural damage. Expect the White Sox to provide an update on his status after the game.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #52
Mets sent RHP Ty Adcock outright to Triple-A Syracuse.
The Mets removed the 28-year-old hurler from their 40-man roster earlier in the week but he went unclaimed on waivers and will stick around as extra bullpen depth. He has done a nice job in three games out of the Mets’ bullpen this season, posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 5/2 K/BB ratio across three innings.
  • LAD 2nd Baseman #46
Dodgers sent INF Buddy Kennedy outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The 26-year-old passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment on Monday and it sounds like he’ll accept the outright assignment to Triple-A. Kennedy went just 1-for-17 with one RBI in his limited action with the Dodgers.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Red Sox’ pitching prospect Payton Tolle will make his Major League debut on Friday night against the Pirates.
The 22-year-old hurler was the Red Sox’ second-round pick from the 2024 draft class. He has already climbed three levels in his first professional season — posting a 3.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a 133/23 K/BB ratio over 91 2/3 innings between High-A Greenville, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. It’s unclear if he’ll stick in the Red Sox’ rotation, or if this will just be a spot start for him. Either way, he makes for an intriguing streaming option against the Pirates on Friday evening.
  • FA 2nd Baseman #17
    Athletics released INF Luis Urías.
The 28-year-old infielder had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. He passed through waivers unclaimed and the A’s granted him his outright release. Urías hit just .230/.315/.338 with eight homers, 25 RBI, two stolen bases and a 45/31 K/BB ratio across 330 plate appearances with the A’s this season. He’s now free to peddle his wares on the open market.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #75
Angels re-signed RHP Connor Brogdon to a minor league contract.
The 30-year-old hurler elected free agency last week rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake, but after exploring the open market he decided that a return to the Angels made the most sense for him. He has registered a 5.30 ERA over 37 1/3 innings in 37 appearances with the Halos this season.
  • SF Shortstop #2
Willy Adames went 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and three RBI on Thursday, leading the Giants to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Cubs.
Adames gave the Giants an early 2-1 advantage as he ambushed a first-pitch fastball from Shota Imanaga for a 417-foot (107.0 mph EV) two-run blast in the home half of the first inning. He then launched a game-tying, 400-foot (102.4 mph EV) solo shot off of another Imanaga fastball in the sixth inning. Adames has struggled offensively in his first season with the Giants, slashing an underwhelming .224/.313/.415 with 24 homers, 69 RBI and seven stolen bases in 566 plate appearances.
