Quinn Priester struggled through 2 2/3 innings against the Braves on Saturday, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks.
Priester is in line to serve as one of Boston’s rotation stopgaps at the beginning of the year, but this could open things up for Cooper Criswell, Michael Fulmer or Sean Newcomb. The poor showing didn’t destroy his ERA, which stands at 4.82, but he’s now given up 14 hits and seven walks in 9 1/3 innings.

Mariners designated RHP Hagen Danner for assignment.
The Mariners need room on the 40-man roster to select the contract of Luis Castillo. No, not that one. Danner will hit the waiver wire and could be claimed by a pitching-needy club.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #50
Erik Swanson (elbow) will throw a bullpen Friday.
Swanson will likely need to throw several bullpens before he can begin a rehab assignment. It would be a surprise if the 31-year-old was back in the Toronto bullpen before the end of April.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #31
Max Scherzer (thumb) won’t play catch Friday.
Scherzer’s ability to throw is a “day-to-day thing” according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider. He received a cortisone shot Tuesday, and the future Hall of Famer has nothing close to a definitive timetable for a potential return.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #99
Spencer Strider (elbow) is making another rehab start Friday for Triple-A Gwinnett.
Strider was solid in his rehab outing Saturday, and threw 60 pitches. The 26-year-old was able to throw 60 pitches in that contest, and assuming he goes deeper this time around, his next start could be with Atlanta.
  • CHC Second Baseman #17
Vidal Bruján is struggling to overcome the right elbow sprain that got him put on the injured list after the Cubs returned from Japan.
Bruján came off the bench in one game in Tokyo before landing on the injured list. He’s still having trouble throwing and is probably weeks away from returning.
  • PIT Designated Hitter #22
With Bryan Reynolds limited to DH duties by triceps soreness, Andrew McCutchen is making his first start of the year in the outfield on Friday.
Right field, specifically. Because Reynolds is trying to play through the injury, McCutchen, who is quite the liability in the outfield these days, was out of the lineup for Pittsburgh’s previous three games. It might be best for everyone if Reynolds just took a seat and tried to heal up, since he hasn’t helped while slugging .226 in 33 plate appearances.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #54
Lucas Giolito will make his second rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
Giolito, coming back from a hamstring strain, is expected to make at least one more rehab start after next Tuesday’s outing. He threw 51 pitches in 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his first rehab start this week.
  • BOS Catcher #12
Connor Wong, out of the Red Sox lineup for a second straight game on Friday, will play Saturday and Sunday, manager Alex Cora said.
Wong isn’t hurt, apparently. Carlos Narváez is starting at catcher in his place again today.
  • SD Catcher #17
Elias Díaz is on the bench in favor of Martín Maldonado for a second straight game Friday against the Cubs.
The Padres didn’t play Thursday, so this is three straight days off for Díaz, who presumably doesn’t need it. A legitimate contender going with Martín Maldonado as its starting catcher in the year 2025 seems a little crazy, but it’s not like Díaz is more than a placeholder, either.
  • WSH Starting Pitcher #34
Nationals placed RHP Michael Soroka on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Apr. 1, with a right biceps strain.
The injury was originally described by the team as a cramp, but it was obviously a bit more than that. Soroka was due to start Sunday against the Diamondbacks. The Nationals could call up Shinnosuke Ogasawara or someone else to start then or could try to get by with a bullpen day if things go well in their next two games. Jackson Rutledge replaced Soroka on the roster for now.
