Gavin Sheets slugged his second home run of the spring as the Padres fell to the Giants on Sunday afternoon in Arizona.
Sheets and Connor Joe shared the action in left field in this one, with Sheets entering the game in the sixth inning. He grounded out in his first at-bat and then walloped a solo shot off of Enny Romero in the ninth inning to pull the Padres to within three runs at 7-4. Fighting for a bench spot on the team’s Opening Day roster, Sheets is hitting just .179 (5-for-28) with a pair of homers and six RBI in Cactus League play.

White Sox released RHP Juan Carela.
The White Sox needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster on Thursday and since Carela couldn’t be designated for assignment while injured (recovering from Tommy John surgery), he had to be released. It wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest to see them bring him back on a minor league pact.
  • DET Right Fielder #50
Tigers optioned OF Brewer Hicklen to Triple-A Toledo.
Hicklen’s stay with the big league club lasted just two games — neither of which he appeared in. He’ll continue to bide his time at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once more. The expectation is that Gleyber Torres will be joining the team in Minneapolis and will be activated from the injured list prior to Friday’s game.
  • LAD Catcher #67
Dodgers optioned C Hunger Feduccia to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Dodgers needed to free up a spot on their active roster for the return of Freddie Freeman (ankle) on Friday, so this move doesn’t come as a surprise. The 27-year-old backstop went hitless in two at-bats during his brief stay with the big league club this time around.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #45
Cubs designated RHP Caleb Kilian for assignment.
The Cubs needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster following the acquisition of Tom Cosgrove on Thursday and unfortunately Kilian drew the short straw this time around. The 27-year-old hurler was blasted in his only start at Triple-A Iowa this season, giving up six runs on six hits in just 2 1/3 innings.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #59
Cubs acquired LHP Tom Cosgrove from the Padres for cash considerations.
The 28-year-old southpaw had been designated for assignment by the Padres over the weekend, so they were willing to flip him for anything that they could get. He was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Iowa where he’ll function as extra bullpen depth for the Cubs. Caleb Kilian was designated for assignment to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster.
  • BOS Shortstop #10
Trevor Story drove in the winning run with a ground out in the 10th inning on Thursday, propelling the Red Sox to a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Blue Jays.
The Red Sox utilized a single and a pair of hit batsmen to load the bases with one out in the 10th inning and all Story needed to do was put the ball in play to drive in the winning run. Story also had a pair of singles and swiped two bases in the ballgame, finishing the afternoon 2-for-5. The 32-year-old infielder is off to a strong start to the 2025 season, slashing .264/.291/.396 with two homers, five RBI and four stolen bases.
  • BOS Center Fielder #16
Jarren Duran went 2-for-3, drew two walks, drove in a run and stole a base on Thursday as the Red Sox walked off the Blue Jays in 10 innings.
Duran drew a one-out walk off of Chris Bassitt in the sixth inning, swiped second base and scored the game’s first run on a two-out RBI single by Alex Bregman. He then delivered a clutch RBI single off of Nick Sandlin to open the 10th inning that tied the game at 3-3, though he was cut down trying to steal second base that time. Duran is off to another strong start at the dish, slashing .250/.313/.333 with zero homers, eight RBI, six runs scored and five stolen bases through 14 ballgames.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #2
Alex Bregman went 1-for-4 with an RBI single on Thursday, as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Blue Jays in 10 innings.
Bregman finally snapped a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI single off of Chris Bassitt that plated Jarren Duran from second base. The 31-year-old third baseman is off to a terrific start with his new club, slashing .288/.328/.475 with two homers, 12 RBI and a stolen base through his first 14 games.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #0
Walker Buehler looked sharp in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Thursday, racking up a season-high seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings of one-run baseball.
Buehler allowed just four hits on the afternoon while allowing one base on balls. He cruised through the first six innings without any damage and was eventually lifted with one out in the seventh after allowing a leadoff walk. That runner ultimately came around to score against the Jays’ bullpen. The 30-year-old right-hander got eight swings and misses on 89 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll try to further improve upon his elevated 5.74 ERA and 1.28 WHIP when he squares off against the Rays in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
  • TOR Catcher #55
Tyler Heineman went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a stolen base on Thursday as the Blue Jays fell to the Red Sox in extra innings.
The Blue Jays couldn’t get anything going against right-hander Walker Buehler in this one, but they pounced as soon as he exited in the seventh. There, Heineman delivered an RBI single into left to tie the game at 1-1 and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice. Heineman also singled off of Aroldis Chapman to start the ninth inning and swiped second base, but the Jays couldn’t cash him in. With his three-hit afternoon, the 33-year-old backstop is now hitting .500 (9-for-18) with a homer and two RBI in his limited action with the Jays this season.
