Mariners optioned RHPs Blas Castano and Hagen Danner to Triple-A Tacoma; reassigned LHP Josh Fleming to minor league camp.
Even with George Kirby (shoulder) set to open the season on the injured list, it was always unlikely that Castano would break camp with the big league club. He’ll open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Tacoma while Danner and Fleming function as extra bullpen depth for the M’s.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #45

Reese Olson (shoulder) is aiming to return during the postseason.
Olson told reporters Monday that he received a positive that he won’t require shoulder surgery and believes it’s possible for him to make it back for the postseason. There’s nothing definitive regarding an exact timetable, and he’s still expected to miss the rest of the regular season. It certainly sounds like he’ll be an option for Detroit at some point during the playoffs, especially if they make a deep postseason run.
Akin, Marsee top Week 20 waiver-wire targets
Eric Samulski gives the top names he's watching on the waiver wire in fantasy baseball Week 20, highlighting Baltimore Orioles pitcher Keegan Akin and Miami Marlins outfielder Jakob Marsee.
  • COL Relief Pitcher #54
Seth Halvorsen (elbow) told reporters Monday that he received encouraging feedback on his MRI results.
There’s nothing official from the Rockies at this juncture, but it sounds like Halvorsen isn’t facing a long-term absence, which is a relief after he hit the injured list over the weekend with a right elbow strain. The 25-year-old closer is going to have a hard time making it back this season, but it certainly appears like he won’t require surgery.
  • MIL Right Fielder #10
Sal Frelick (knee) remains out of the lineup for Monday’s series opener against Atlanta.
Frelick will sit out his second straight game after exiting Saturday’s contest against the Nationals with left knee soreness. It doesn’t appear to be a significant concern since he hasn’t been placed on the injured list after a couple days. It’ll be rookie Brandon Lockridge taking over in right field once again on Monday evening.
  • NYY Shortstop #14
Amed Rosario is in right field and batting second on Monday against the Rangers.
It’s a bizarre lineup from Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who appears to be trying to shake things up on the night before Aaron Judge is eligible to be activated from the injured list. Not only is Rosario near the top of the order behind veteran leadoff specialist Paul Goldschmidt, but Austin Slater is batting fifth behind Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton with lefty Patrick Corbin on the hill for Texas.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #57
Blue Jays released RHP Chad Green.
Green has been jettisoned to pursue opportunities elsewhere after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 34-year-old veteran high-leverage specialist was designated for assignment last week after compiling a lackluster 4.85 ERA across 42 2/3 innings this season. He should be able to latch on somewhere else as emergency organizational relief depth.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #30
Grayson Rodriguez (elbow) will undergo season-ending surgery.
The door is officially slammed shut on Rodriguez pitching this season for the Orioles, which means he can be safely dropped in re-draft formats where he’s still rostered. The 25-year-old right-hander’s status for next season won’t be clear until after next week’s debridement procedure on his elbow. He wound up missing the entire 2025 campaign due to shoulder and elbow issues, which makes it extremely challenging to forecast his future from a dynasty perspective. At this point, fantasy managers need to see him stay healthy and perform at something close to previous levels before rostering him again in any format.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #40
Reynaldo López (shoulder) remains limited to playing catch.
There was some optimism a couple months ago that López might pitch again this season, but that doesn’t appear very likely, especially with Atlanta falling out of playoff contention. The 31-year-old righty has been out since early April recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #56
Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) has yet to resume throwing.
Schwellenbach hit the injured list back in early July with a fractured right elbow and his odds of making it back prior to the end of the regular season appear microscopic at best. The 25-year-old burgeoning fantasy ace hasn’t been officially ruled out, but he’s running out of time to start ramping up a throwing program.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #51
Chris Sale (rib) is progressing towards returning this season, according to The Athletic’s David O’Brien.
O’Brien adds that Sale completed a bullpen session recently and is scheduled to face hitters in a live batting practice session in the near future. The 36-year-old fantasy ace has been out since late June with a fracture in his left rib cage. He’ll require a handful of rehab starts to build up his pitch count and stamina, but it’s theoretically possible he could make it back at some point in September.
  • HOU 3rd Baseman #15
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Isaac Paredes has been diagnosed with a severe hamstring strain, but will not undergo season-ending surgery.
Brown added that Paredes received a PRP injection and will go with the rest and rehabilitation route instead of undergoing a surgical procedure, which would’ve carried a six-month recovery timetable. It’s extremely unlikely that the All-Star third baseman will make it back this season, but he hasn’t been officially ruled out for the postseason yet. It sounds like he’ll be ready for the start of spring training without any limitations.
