Lance McCullers Jr. (elbow) threw a live bullpen session Friday.
McCullers threw either 23 or 24 pitches — who’s really counting, anyway? — and told reporters that he felt good after the session. It’s the second live bullpen for the right-hander as he continues to make progress from the flexor tendon issue in his right elbow. The hope is that McCullers can make starts for the Astros by the end of April.
  • COL Starting Pitcher #26

Rockies placed LHP Austin Gomber on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 24, with left shoulder soreness.
Gomber was able to throw 3 2/3 innings in a Cactus League game on Saturday, so his return should be right around the corner. Bradley Blalock might get one turn in his place the first time a fifth starter is needed.
  • COL Center Fielder #8
Rockies signed OF Mickey Moniak to a one-year contract.
Moniak will earn $1.25 million. His competition for corner outfield at-bats is Jordan Beck, Nick Martini and Sean Bouchard, so there’s a good chance he’ll wind up getting a long look against right-handers.
  • COL Left Fielder #16
Rockies designated OF Sam Hilliard for assignment.
The Rockies are so excited about 34-year-old journeyman Nick Martini that they’re cutting Hilliard after he hit .239/.305/.507 for the club last season and after giving him a $1 million deal in November. He’ll probably clear waivers, and while he could opt for free agency, his best bet would be to stick around and wait another change in the winds.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #60
Astros placed RHP Forrest Whitley on the 15-day injured list with a left knee injury.
Whitley was expecting to start the season as a long relief option this season, but he suffered a bone bruise at the beginning of March. He has already been throwing and could push to get his bullpen spot in the next couple of weeks.
  • CLE First Baseman #9
Kyle Manzardo is DHing and batting fifth Thursday in the opener against Cole Ragans and the Royals.
That’s a good sign. Manzardo started just three games against left-handers last season, but the Guardians are going with him over Johnathan Rodriguez today. They’re even batting him in the middle of the order. It looks like he’ll probably hit third against righties. Lane Thomas is there today, but he’ll hit lower versus righties.
  • HOU Shortstop #54
Astros selected the contract of 2B Brendan Rodgers, LHP Steven Okert, and RHPs Rafael Montero and Ryan Gusto from Sugar Land Space Cowboys.
Rodgers will serve as the primary second baseman while Jose Altuve is out in left field; however, Maurico Dubon will mix in as well. All of Montero, Okert, and Gusto will begin the year in the bullpen.
  • MIL Left Fielder #28
Brewers designated OF Brewer Hicklen for assignment.
The 29-year-old Hicklen is a fine Triple-A outfielder, but he’s never convinced a major league team to give him a chance. He was 4-for-21 this spring.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #53
Astros placed RHP Cristian Javier on the 15-day injured list after Tommy John surgery.
This move is procedural. Javier is aiming for a July return after off-season Tommy John surgery.
  • MIL Center Fielder #16
Brewers placed OF Blake Perkins on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 24, with a fractured right shin.
A May return appears most likely for Perkins, though it’s possible he could beat that timetable. He’ll start in the outfield against lefties once he returns. Until then, Garrett Mitchell should get a chance to show he can be a full-time player.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #26
Brewers placed RHP Aaron Ashby on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 24, with a strained right oblique.
Ashby hasn’t pitched since March 3, so even though he should be about recovered from the oblique strain by now, it’s going to be a while before he contributes, particularly if the Brewers intend to bring him back as a starter.
