Waldron gave up two hits, issued a pair of walks and only notched one strikeout. The 28-year-old doesn’t have a clear path to a spot in San Diego’s season-opening rotation following the offseason additions of Nick Pivetta and Kyle Hart, which means he’ll likely open the year as a multi-inning relief option or head back to Triple-A El Paso.

Will Vest threw a scoreless ninth inning to secure a save in a 1-0 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

Kyle Finnegan got the eighth inning against the 5-6-7 hitters for the White Sox and allowed one baserunner, so Vest was tasked with getting the 9-1-2 hitters out and did so with no issue. He struck out one and didn’t allow a single baserunner in securing his 18th save. This feels like a pure committee, but both Vest and Finnegan should retain fantasy value.

Troy Melton threw five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six in a win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

Melton threw 43 of his 56 pitches for strikes and could have gone deeper in the game if he hadn’t been used as a bulk reliever in his most recent outings. The 24-year-old posted a 23 percent whiff rate but a 34 percent CSW as he pounded the zone with both his four-seamer and sinker. Melton doesn’t yet have a spot in the Tigers’ rotation, but it might make sense for them to find a way to make that happen.

Shane Smith

CWS Starting Pitcher #64

Shane Smith threw five shutout innings while allowing two hits in a no-decision against the Tigers on Wednesday.

Smith struck out five and walked three, and has looked good in his last two starts after struggling in his first off the IL. The 25-year-old posted a strong 34 percent whiff rate and 29 percent CSW with his changeup eating up Tigers hitters. The All-Star now has a 4.01 ERA on the season and lines up to start against the Braves next week, which could be a decent streaming option in deeper formats.

Anderson Pilar

ATL Relief Pitcher #63

Braves signed RHP Anderson Pilar to a minor league contract.

You might remember Pilar with the Braves as a Rule 5 pick this spring. He gave up nine runs in 5 2/3 innings and then was returned to the Marlins in mid-March. Miami, though, released him earlier this week, and now the Braves can take another look at him without being forced to roster him. The 27-year-old had a 4.26 ERA and a 50/13 K/BB in 44 1/3 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville this season.

George Springer

TOR Right Fielder #4

George Springer has been cleared to resume playing and could serve as a DH for Triple-A Buffalo as soon as Thursday.

Springer has been on the seven-day concussion IL since Aug. 1. He probably won’t play more than a game or two in the minors if he’s feeling good, so it’s possible he’ll be activated this weekend.

Josh Hader is seeking a second opinion on his shoulder strain and won’t be back once his 15 days are up, manager Joe Espada said.

Espada wouldn’t reveal what the first opinion revealed, but it probably wasn’t good news. Bryan Abreu just might be a top-10 fantasy closer for the rest of the year.

Endy Rodriguez

PIT Catcher #5
Endy Rodríguez underwent ulnar nerve transposition surgery on Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.

It’s basically a second straight lost year for Rodríguez, who underwent Tommy John surgery last summer. He played in just 18 games for the Pirates, hitting .173/.246/.250 in 57 plate appearances. The good news for him is that Joey Bart has regressed and Henry Davis still hasn’t done anything to establish himself. Unless the Pirates target an upgrade from the current group, Rodríguez should have a chance to compete for the starting job next spring.

Angels sent INF Scott Kingery outright to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 31-year-old Kingery went unclaimed on waivers after hitting .256/.317/.424 in 44 Triple-A games and going 4-for-25 in 14 appearances with the Angels.

Mets activated RHP Paul Blackburn from the 15-day injured list.

Blackburn, back from a shoulder impingement, just posted a 2.42 ERA in 22 1/3 innings over four starts for Syracuse, but the Mets are planning on sticking him in middle relief instead of giving him Frankie Montas’s rotation spot. Blackburn has a 7.71 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances in the majors this season.
