Andrés Chaparro had a two-run homer and a two-run single off the bench in the Nationals’ 14-7 victory over the Marlins on Tuesday.
In adding Nathaniel Lowe, Josh Bell, Paul DeJong and Amed Rosario, the Nationals didn’t leave any room for Chaparro on this year’s roster. Technically, he’s still probably in the running at third base. However, he’s a much better fit defensively at first. A very accomplished Triple-A slugger, Chaparro hit .215/.280/.413 over 33 games in his first crack at major league pitching last year. He should be able to do better than that if given another chance, but he probably would fall a little short of being a quality first baseman or DH.
