Brice Matthews will start at second base in the Astros’ first game of the spring.
Matthews is a quality shortstop, but with Jeremy Peña having that spot locked down, second base could be his long-term home. The 2023 first-round pick hit .265/.384/.481 in 79 games at first levels last season, topping out with 12 games in Triple-A. He’s probably not ready to hit in the majors yet, but he could be a factor later this year, especially if Jose Altuve grows comfortable in left field.

Josue De paula was named the MVP of the Futures Game after hitting a three-run homer to help the National League to a 4-2 win over the American League on Saturday.
De Paula took top pitching prospect Noah Schultz of the White Sox deep for the three-run job to take home MVP honors. The 20-year-old is considered one of the best outfield prospects in baseball, and represents yet another potential star for the Dodgers. He’s currently in High-A, so it’s unlikely we see De Paula in the majors before the end of 2026 at the earliest.
Players to watch in MLB All-Star Futures Game
James Schiano spotlights the rising stars to watch in this weekend's 2025 All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta.
  • FA 2nd Baseman #26
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that multiple teams are interested in DJ LeMahieu.
LeMahieu was released by the Yankees on Thursday despite being owed over $22 million, but the 36-year-old still gets on at a decent clip with a .338 clip, and he is capable of playing a couple of positions in the infield. His days of being a fantasy option have passed, but it wouldn’t be a surprised if he was a weapon off the bench for a playoff-contending club.
  • CLE 1st Baseman #9
Kyle Manzardo went 1-for-2 with a solo homer and a walk in Cleveland’s 6-2 win over the White Sox on Saturday.
Manzardo drew a walk in the first inning, then took Jordan Leasure deep for a solo homer in the sixth to give the Guardians the lead. He was later lifted in the eighth for a pinch-hitter with a left-handed reliever on the mound. The 24-year-old slugger is up to 14 homers and 34 RBI while slashing .217/.294/.433 across 296 plate appearances.
  • CWS Catcher #8
Kyle Teel went 1-for-4 with two RBI against the Guardians on Saturday.
Teel drove in the only two runs of the game for the White Sox with a base hit in the fourth inning with runners on second and third. The 23-year-old backstop is still searching for his first home run while hitting .235/.376/.294 with nine runs scored and six RBI across 86 plate appearances.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #28
Tanner Bibee allowed two runs with five strikeouts over five innings in a win over the White Sox on Saturday.
Bibee held the White Sox scoreless through three innings before running into some trouble in the fourth. Chicago strung together four straight hits to bring in two runs. Bibee tossed one more inning, ending his day with five strikeouts over five frames. The 26-year-old right-hander will end the first half with a 4.29 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 95/33 K/BB ratio across 109 innings.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #59
Sean Burke allowed two runs with five strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Saturday.
Burke walked two batters and gave up a run on a base hit in the first inning. Two hits and a sacrifice fly plated another run in the fourth. Burke tossed a scoreless fifth inning and ended his day at 97 pitches with five strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander will carry a 4.36 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and an 80/43 K/BB ratio into the second half following the All-Star break.
  • NYM Left Fielder #22
Juan Soto went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer to power the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Royals on Saturday.
Soto put the Mets on the board in the fourth inning, breaking a scoreless game with a two-run blast off Jonathan Bowlan for his only hit of the game. Soto homered in back-to-back days against Kansas City and has slugged 23 on the season while slashing .265/.400/.515 with 70 runs scored, 56 RBI, and 11 steals across 419 plate appearances.
  • KC 2nd Baseman #6
Jonathan India went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI against the Mets on Saturday.
India doubled to lead off the first inning, then knocked another double in the sixth to drive in the Royals’ only run of the game. The 28-year-old is hitting .249/.330/.346 with four homers, 40 runs scored, and 24 RBI across 383 plate appearances.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #39
Edwin Díaz converted a two-inning save with one strikeout against the Royals on Saturday.
Díaz, coming off three days without an appearance, took the mound with a one-run lead in the eighth and worked a two-inning save with one strikeout to secure the win for the Mets. The 31-year-old right-hander is up to 19 saves with an outstanding 1.66 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and a 55/13 K/BB ratio across 38 innings.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #47
Frankie Montas allowed one run with five strikeouts over five innings in a win against the Royals on Saturday.
Montas had an excellent outing after giving up ten runs over his last two starts. He held the Royals off the board through five innings before a pair of doubles brought a run in to start the sixth. That would end the day for Montas at 83 pitches with five strikeouts. The 32-year-old right-hander holds a 5.03 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 17/4 K/BB ratio across 19 2/3 innings.
