Mariners LHP Tyler Jay elected free agency.
Jay will test the open market instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Tacoma. The 30-year-old southpaw was removed from Seattle’s 40-man roster last week after the club acquired reliever Will Klein from the Athletics. He made five relief appearances last season between the Brewers and Mets.
  • WSH Shortstop #14

Paul DeJong is not in the starting lineup for Friday’s bout against the Diamondbacks.
DeJong has struck out 11 times and picked up just four hits over the first week of the season. He’ll take a break with Jose Tena handling third base against Brandon Pfaadt and the Diamondbacks.
  • NYY Center Fielder #35
Cody Bellinger is not in the starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Pirates due a back issue.
Boone told reporters that Bellinger’s absence is precautionary, and doesn’t think it’s “anything big.” The 29-year-old could be available off the bench, but the Yankees will likely try and give him at least a day off. Trent Grisham gets the start in center in Bellinger’s absence. Consider him day-to-day, for now.
  • BAL Right Fielder #15
Orioles optioned OF Dylan Carlson to Triple-A Norfolk.
Carlson is back to the minors after the Orioles activated Gunnar Henderson (side) off the injured list. Carlson will be up and down without a regular role barring something unforeseeable.
  • BAL Shortstop #2
Orioles reinstated INF Gunnar Henderson off the 10-day injured list.
As expected, Henderson is back for Friday’s game against the Royals. The 23-year-old has been out of action because of an intercostal (side) issue, but he’s ready to roll after completing a short rehab assignment. Henderson carries as much upside as any shortstop in baseball, and should be inserted into lineups as soon as possible.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #57
Scott Effross (hamstring) has stopped throwing after suffering a setback in rehab.
Effross is now in a “holding pattern” according to manager Aaron Boone. The 31-year-old has been riddled with injuries over the past few seasons, and it doesn’t sound like he’s going to help the Yankees in the near future.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #71
Ian Hamilton (illness) will rejoin the Yankees during their series against the Tigers.
Hamilton is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’ll be an option in the mid-to-late innings for the Yankees upon his return.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #61
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Jake Cousins (elbow) is under a week from returning the mound.
That doesn’t mean Cousins is ready to pitch, but rather that he can begin throwing bullpens. The 30-year-old is on the 60-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow, and won’t be eligible to join the Yankees’ bullpen until the end of May. Cousins will be a middle-inning option as soon as he’s well enough to be one.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #81
Luis Gil (lat) is 7-10 days away from playing catch.
That according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. The right-hander is on the 60-day injured list, and won’t be eligible to come off that list until the end of May. It remains to be seen if he’ll be ready to rejoin the rotation at that time, and a return in the middle of the summer seems like a more realistic timeline.
  • LAD Catcher #67
Dodger recalled C Hunter Feduccia from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Feduccia is the corresponding transaction for Freddie Freeman’s placement on the injured list. The 27-year-old will be a bench bat while with the Dodgers, but could earn a start or two against left-handed pitching.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #60
Braves re-signed RHP Jesse Chavez to a minor league contract.
Of course they did. Chavez elected free agency after being designated for assignment, but the 41-year-old can’t quit Atlanta, and Atlanta can’t quit him.
