Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo reported that the Rex Sox and Garrett Crochet have opened talks on a contract extension.
This was expected when the Red Sox traded four prospects to get Crochet back in December, but we now have reports that the conversations have begun. The left-hander has two more years of arbitration before he becomes a free agent, but Cotillo suggests that the Red Sox are trying to lock Crochet into a longer-term contract before those arbitration years expire. In his first year as a full-time starting pitcher, Crochet posted a 3.58 ERA and a 35.1 percent strikeout rate while showcasing the ability to be one of the top starters in baseball.

Rays placed INF Jonathan Aranda on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist fracture.
Aranda suffered the injury during Thursday’s contest against the Yankees. While the Rays haven’t placed a specific timeline on his return, the 27-year-old infielder told reporters that he’s optimistic he’ll be able to return before the end of the regular season. He’ll be shut down completely from using his wrist for the next three weeks before being re-evaluated.
Perkins, Lawlar winners at MLB trade deadline
Eric Samulski explains why Jack Perkins and Jordan Lawlar are two of the biggest winners from the MLB's trade deadline and discusses their respective outlooks for the rest of the season.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #68
Rays optioned LHP Joe Rock to Triple-A Durham.
The 25-year-old southpaw has done a decent job in his first two appearances with the Rays, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 9/0 K/BB ratio across five innings of work. It shouldn’t take him long to earn another opportunity with the big league club.
  • TB 3rd Baseman #10
Rays recalled INF Tristan Gray from Triple-A Durham.
With Jonathan Aranda (wrist) landing on the 10-day injured list and Jose Caballero getting shipped to the Yankees, the door is open for Gray to see some action with the big league club. The 29-year-old infielder has gone 1-for-6 (.167) with one RBI in his limited action at the Major League level this season.
  • TB 2nd Baseman #7
Rays activated INF Ha-Seong Kim from the 10-day injured list.
The 29-year-old infielder is ready to return after missing a couple of weeks due to a lower back strain. Prior to landing on the shelf he had been hitting .226/.314/.355 with one homer, three RBI and four stolen bases in his first 10 games with the Rays.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #41
Astros’ skipper Joe Espada told reporters on Friday that Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) is in a position to make his next start with the big league club.
The 25-year-old right-hander has been shelved since early April after suffering a fractured thumb when he was struck by a ball on the field during batting practice. It couldn’t come at a better time for the Astros as they currently have a pair of vacancies in their rotation that they’re looking to fill. Fantasy managers in deeper league should pounce if Arrighetti is still hanging around on the waiver wire.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #70
Giants selected the contract of RHP Kai-Wei Teng from Triple-A Sacramento.
He’ll take the bullpen spot that was vacated when Camilo Doval was dealt to the Yankees on Thursday. The 26-year-old right-hander has registered a 3.67 ERA,1.11 WHIP and an 86/21 K/BB ratio over 54 innings in 25 appearances at Triple-A Sacramento this season.
  • SF Center Fielder #58
Giants recalled OF Grant McCray from Triple-A Sacramento.
With Mike Yastrzemski dealt to the Royals at Thursday’s trade deadline the Giants had an opening for an outfielder on their roster which gives McCray another chance with the big league club. The 24-year-old has hit .260/.338/.430 with 14 long balls, 63 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 468 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. He is not in the team’s starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Mets.
  • CHC Catcher #15
Carson Kelly went 2-for-3 and scored the game’s lone run as the Cubs eked out a 1-0 victory over the Orioles on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
The 31-year-old backstop smacked a leadoff single off of Trevor Rogers to open the second inning and advanced to third on a double by Pete Crow-Armstrong. He then trotted home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ian Happ. That would be the only run that either team would muster in the ballgame. With his two-hit attack, Kelly is now hitting .272/.367/.498 with 13 homers and 36 RBI in what has been a strong offensive season for the Cubs.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #48
Daniel Palencia slammed the door on the Orioles in the ninth inning on Friday afternoon, working a scoreless frame to preserve a one-run advantage.
The Cubs were only able to scratch out one run in the ballgame against Trevor Rogers, but Palencia made sure that lead stood up when it got to him in the ninth. He did allow a two-out double to Adley Rutschman to put the tying run in scoring position before getting Tyler O’Neill to fly out to left to end the ballgame. Palencia has been a hero in the Cubs’ bullpen — and for fantasy managers — this season, posting a 1.36 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 42/11 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 innings while converting 15 of his first 16 save chances.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #22
Cade Horton delivered another strong start in Friday afternoon’s victory over the Orioles, hurling five innings of scoreless baseball.
The 23-year-old hurler scattered two hits and three walks on the afternoon while punching out three opposing hitters. The biggest threat against him came in the opening inning as Horton issued a pair of walks, but he rallied to get Adley Rutschman and Tyler O’Neill on fly balls to escape. He generated seven whiffs on 71 pitches on the day, posting a strong CSW of 34 percent. He’ll look to keep the good time rolling as he brings a 3.42 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 53/25 K/BB ratio (73 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Reds.
