Mets signed 1B Joey Meneses to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
The Mets’ obviously want to bring back Pete Alonso as their starting first baseman for the 2025 season and beyond, but in the event that he signs elsewhere, building quality depth at the position isn’t a terrible idea. Meneses, 32, struggled mightily at the dish in 2024, but he’s just one year removed from a season in which he slashed .275/.321/.401 for the Nationals with 13 homers and 89 RBI.

Tigers signed LHP Thomas Szapucki to a minor league contract.
Szapucki has missed nearly two years recovering from thoracic outlet surgery and hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since making 11 relief appearances between the Mets and Giants during the 2022 campaign. The 28-year-old southpaw was a promising pitching prospect just a few years ago and represents an extremely low-risk dice roll for Detroit’s front office.
  • SEA Relief Pitcher
Mariners signed RHP Garrett Hill to a minor league contract.
Hill heads to Seattle as extra organizational relief depth after struggling to an underwhelming 4.79 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 80/51 K/BB ratio across 67 2/3 innings (44 appearances, five starts) last season across three levels in Detroit’s minor-league system. The 29-year-old righty made 26 appearances (eight starts) for the Tigers from 2022-2023, finishing with a serviceable 5.09 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 54/43 K/BB ratio over 76 innings of work. He’s a low-risk project for the Mariners pitching development engine.
  • NYM Left Fielder #4
Mets acquired OF Alexander Canario from the Cubs for cash.
Canario represents an intriguing low-risk pickup for New York as extra outfield depth in the wake of Nick Madrigal’s shoulder injury. The 24-year-old former top prospect became expendable for Chicago following the offseason addition of superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker after posting an .857 OPS with two homers in 21 contests at the big-league level over the past two years. There isn’t much of a path to major-league at-bats with the Mets at the moment, but he’s a worthwhile reclamation project and could turn into an impactful reserve outfielder down the road.
  • NYM Second Baseman #11
Mets placed INF Nick Madrigal on the 60-day injured list with a left shoulder fracture.
Madrigal is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with a fractured left shoulder, which is he suffered during Sunday’s spring training contest against the Nationals when he slipped while charging a ground ball. There isn’t an official timetable for the 27-year-old reserve infielder’s return at the moment, but fantasy managers should anticipate him missing at least a few months, if not longer.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #63
Brewers signed LHP Josh Maciejewski to a minor league contract.
Maciejewski heads to Triple-A Nashville as extra left-handed depth for Milwaukee after pitching well in four relief appearances last year with the Yankees. The 29-year-old southpaw doesn’t miss a ton of bats, but teams never seem to have enough quality lefties in the pipeline.
  • SD Second Baseman #69
Padres re-signed 2B Nate Mondou to a minor league contract.
Mondou last appeared in the majors back in 2022 when he got into one game for the Athletics. The 29-year-old journeyman infielder spent last season at Triple-A El Paso, batting .267/.367/.404 with five homers and 11 steals in 443 plate appearances. He’s merely emergency organizational depth at this stage of his career.
  • CHC Catcher #9
Miguel Amaya finished 3-for-4 as the Cubs topped the Padres 10-5 on Monday.
Amaya is 5-for-6 to start the spring. The Cubs followed through on their threat to bring in a veteran catcher over the winter, but Amaya figures to get the majority of the time over Carson Kelly initially. There were times last year when it sounded like the Cubs were really down on Amaya’s future, but he did help his cause by hitting .289/.341/.482 over his last 28 games.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #16
Matthew Boyd worked two scoreless innings and struck out two in his start versus the Padres on Monday.
Boyd came out with a revamped slider today. He threw the pitch four mph harder than last season, even as his fastball velocity held steady. Given that his previous slider was arguably his best pitch, we’ll have to wait and see if it’s a one-time thing of if he plans to carry on with it.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #32
Ben Brown yielded two runs and five hits in two innings Monday against the Padres.
Brown clearly isn’t yet all of the way up to speed, and five of the eight balls in play he gave up today were hit at least 103 mph. Eguy Rosario, who is 7-for-38 with no homers against right-handers in his MLB career, took him deep. Brown didn’t enter camp with much of a shot of making the Cubs rotation as long as everyone stayed healthy. He’ll probably start in Triple-A initially, but he could be part of the major league pen in time.
  • SD Left Fielder #21
Tirso Ornelas hit a solo homer off the bench Monday, leaving him 3-for-7 so far this spring.
The Padres could still really use J.D. Martinez or maybe David Peralta as a DH option, but since they’ve yet to go that route, Ornelas has a shot of making the team and getting a lot of time at the spot initially. The soon-to-be 25-year-old hit .297/.367/.497 in Triple-A last season. His exit velocity numbers aren’t very impressive, but he did have a rather nice 88/53 K/BB in 548 plate appearances last year.
