Chris Sale was named as the Comeback Player of the Year in the National League for the 2024 season.
The 35-year-old southpaw managed to stay healthy in his first season with the Braves and delivered perhaps the finest season of his career — registering a 2.38 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a 225/39 K/BB ratio over 177 2/3 innings in his 29 starts. He’s expected to add to his mantle during this award season, as Sale is listed as the favorite to bring home the Cy Young Award in the National League for the first time in his career.

Anthony Volpe has been dropped to ninth in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays.
Volpe has been dropped to the bottom of Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s lineup card amid a disastrous .142 (15-for-106) stretch over his last 30 games, which includes just four homers and three steals during that span. The 24-year-old shortstop has 12 homers and 10 steals through 99 games this season, but he’s underwhelmed relative to fantasy managers’ lofty expectations.
Dodgers relievers to add following Scott's injury
With the Dodgers "all but a lock" to add a reliever before the trade deadline following Tanner Scott's injury, Eric Samulski assesses which arms could be in line for precious save opportunities.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #44
Royals selected the contract of LHP Rich Hill from Triple-A Omaha.
Hill will take the ball on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field against the Cubs where his kicked off his big-league career back in 2005. The 45-year-old southpaw is not a recommended streaming option for fantasy purposes, but he’s a remarkable story as he embarks on his 21st campaign in the majors.
  • KC Relief Pitcher #54
Royals optioned RHP Andrew Hoffmann to Triple-A Omaha.
Hoffman returns to the minors to make room for veteran lefty Rich Hill on Kansas City’s active roster. The 25-year-old righty has made three relief appearances this season in the big leagues.
  • KC Right Fielder #27
Royals designated OF Tyler Gentry for assignment.
Gentry has been removed from Kansas City’s 40-man roster to make room for veteran southpaw Rich Hill. The 26-year-old hasn’t appeared in the majors this season and figures to pass through waivers unclaimed.
  • SF 3rd Baseman #16
Rafael Devers is making his first career start at first base on Tuesday against the Braves.
It’s his first appearance in the field this season. Devers was dealing with back tightness, delaying his first base debut, and he’s hit just .219/.333/.333 with two homers in 29 games with the Giants. With Devers at first, Wilmer Flores is DHing tonight and Dominic Smith is on the bench. One imagines Flores will be in line for more playing time as long as Devers takes well to first.
  • KC Catcher #94
Royals acquired C Julio E. Rodriguez from the Mariners for cash.
Just drop the C and E and we’d have a major story here. Rodriguez, 28, was hitting .231/.298/.365 in 15 games in Double-A this season, his first in the Seattle system. He’s yet to progress beyond Double-A in nine minor league seasons.
  • DET Shortstop #28
Javier Báez is back in the Tigers lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Pirates.
Báez, who is starting at shortstop and batting eighth tonight, didn’t play Saturday or Monday because of soreness in the shoulder he hurt in June. He might continue to need maintenance days for a while longer.
  • COL Shortstop
Rockies signed first-round pick SS Ethan Holliday.
Holliday, the fourth overall selection, gets a $9 million signing bonus — per MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis — which vastly exceeds his $8.2 million slot value. The 18-year-old prodigy winds up signing for more than the $8.2 million that No. 1 overall pick Eli Willits secured from the Nationals. In fact, it’s a new record for high school players. Before Willits signed, that record had been held by Jackson Holliday at $8.19 million.
  • BOS Center Fielder #16
Jarren Duran is on the bench for Tuesday’s game against the Phillies and left-hander Christopher Sánchez.
It’s the second straight time Duran has taken a seat against a lefty starter. He’s can’t complain much, given that he’s hit .209/.241/.324 versus southpaws this season. Still, we don’t see the point of making room for Masataka Yoshida, who also hasn’t been very good against southpaws as a major leaguer, and weakening the defense by putting Duran on the bench.
  • CIN Right Fielder #30
Will Benson is on the bench for a sixth straight game Tuesday against the Nationals.
Benson had started the previous nine games in a row, but his playing time has dried up with Jake Fraley back. If the Reds had another first base option, they could sit Spencer Steer against some righties to make room for Benson in the lineup. However, that’s not really possible unless maybe Gavin Lux gets a crash course at the position.
