Diamondbacks claimed RHP Seth Martinez off waivers from the Astros.
Martinez augments Arizona’s organizational relief depth heading into the offseason after making a career-high 44 relief appearances last year for the Astros. The 30-year-old righty has made 111 appearances in the big leagues since 2021 and won’t reach free agency until 2029.

Jordan Walker went 0-for-2 with a walk in the first game of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
Walker started in right field, but he got to play only three innings there before the game was delayed and then suspended due to rain. He’ll presumably play for Memphis again tonight, but it should be a rather short rehab assignment for Walker, who has been on the IL since May 31 with wrist inflammation.
Bednar one of most dominant relievers in baseball
James Schiano discusses the emergence of David Bednar, explaining how he put a disastrous 2024 season behind him to rebound this year, which could lead to him being traded to a postseason contender prior to the deadline.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #85
Clayton Beeter struck out two in a perfect inning for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Beeter, who missed the start of the year with a shoulder impingement, could be close to getting a look in the Yankees pen; he’s up to 94-97 mph with his fastball as a reliever and he’s allowed just two runs in 12 innings for the RailRiders. Walks are the only thing holding him back; he has a 19/9 K/BB over his 12 innings. In his three outings, though, he’s struck out six and walked none over three innings.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #48
Kyle Gibson pitched five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts Thursday for Triple-A Durham.
It was seniors’ night in Durham, as Gibson was facing off against Mike Clevinger, who pitched six scoreless innings for Charlotte. Those two total 22 years of big-league experience and are a combined 72 years old. Gibson has allowed just one run over 12 1/3 innings in three appearances since joining Durham. The Rays wouldn’t seem to need him, but some team is going to want him as a fifth starter if this keeps up.
  • CLE 1st Baseman #43
Jhonkensy Noel hit two homers Thursday in his third game since being sent down to Triple-A Columbus.
The homers were the two hardest balls hit in Triple-A games Thursday, leaving his bat at 113.1 and 112.2 mph. The Guardians had the right idea in getting Noel regular at-bats in Triple-A for a spell, but the 23-year-old should be back to help out at least against lefties in the second half.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #52
Nick Sandlin gave up four runs while getting just one out in his rehab appearance for Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.
Sandlin, out since Apr. 20 with a lat strain, was making his first Triple-A appearance after allowing two runs — one earned — over 2 1/3 innings in two outings in Rookie ball. He gave up back-to-back homers to Jhonkensy Noel and C.J. Kayfus last night, so it seems like he’ll need a few more appearances before being activated.
  • MIN Catcher #62
Diego Cartaya struck out twice and walked once for Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday, leaving him 4-for-49 with 34 strikeouts this season.
Cartaya, who was rated by most as one of the game’s top 20 prospects two years ago, is obviously completely lost right now. After missing most of May, he’s gone 2-for-17 with 11 strikeouts in six games since rejoining the Saints. He’s just 23, and there’s still some hope that things will click. He’s nearly unplayable right now, though.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #81
Chase Burns allowed two runs and struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings in his debut for Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
Burns averaged 97.1 mph with his fastball in his first Triple-A start, topping out at 98.6 mph, and the 29 sliders he threw produced six whiffs and nine called strikes. The 2024 first-round pick figures to make his MLB debut at some point this season.
  • CIN 3rd Baseman #3
Jeimer Candelario went 1-for-7 with four strikeouts in a doubleheader for Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
Candelario, returning from a back strain, has now played in 10 rehab games, and while he went 3-for-6 with two doubles in the two games in Rookie ball, he’s 6-for-30 with one extra-base hit and a 10/2 K/BB in eight games since moving up to Louisville. He’s just not making much of a case for a significant role in the Reds infield, but he’ll have to be activated in the near future, which could lead to Connor Joe being demoted or Garrett Hampson being DFA’d.
  • MIA 1st Baseman #36
Matt Mervis finished 3-for-5 with a homer and a triple for Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.
Eric Wagaman has been struggling, so Mervis might get another shot if he keeps this up. He’s hit .265/.359/.706 with four homers in nine games since reporting to Jacksonville. All four of his balls in play last night were hit at least 99 mph, and the one that resulted in an out was still launched 387 feet.
  • BAL Catcher #72
Samuel Basallo hit his fifth homer of the month for Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.
Basallo is 9-for-27 in June, and he’s hitting .252/.367/.597 with 14 homers overall for Norfolk. The Orioles would probably be better off right now with him as their primary DH against righties, but so far at least, they haven’t wanted to sacrifice his development as a catcher to make that happen.
