Griffin Canning surrendered two runs in five innings Saturday versus the Rangers.
Canning left with a five-run lead, which normally gets one a win. The Angels, though, managed to blow it. The good news for Canning in 2024 was that he qualified for the ERA title for the first time, throwing 171 2/3 innings. The bad is that he topped the AL by giving up 105 runs and 99 earned runs in the process. He ends the year 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA. Another organization might be able to get more out of him, but we wouldn’t expect the Angels to trade him this winter.

Jerar Encarnacion is at first base and batting fifth on Wednesday against the Rockies.
Encarnacion has gone 1-for-14 with a stolen base in five games since returning from the injured list last week. This will be his first start at the cold corner with Dominic Smith getting the night off from facing Colorado southpaw Kyle Freeland.
Inside the fantasy impact of Chapman's injury
Eric Samulski unpacks the significance of San Francisco Giants third-baseman Matt Chapman's hand injury that will cause him to miss more than the 10-day IL minimum.
  • SF Catcher #14
Patrick Bailey (neck) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Rockies.
Bailey is on the bench for the second straight contest after being scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with neck spasms. It’ll be Andrew Knizner handling the catching duties again on Wednesday night. The fact San Francisco hasn’t brought up any emergency catching depth seems to suggest that he’s not at risk of landing on the injured list.
  • TOR 3rd Baseman #22
Ernie Clement went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double before coming out of Wednesday’s game against the Cardinals in the ninth.
Clement was hurt while trying to make a diving play in the eighth, but it seemed like he just had the wind knocked out of him. He remained in to finish the inning, but he was then lifted for defense in the ninth, which is not something that would typically happen. If there was something beyond getting the wind knocked out of him, it might have been an issue with his left knee, which hit the ground pretty hard.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #0
Marcus Stroman (knee) allowed one run — zero earned — over 3 1/3 innings on Wednesday for Double-A Somerset.
Stroman punched out six batters, issued two walks and threw 46 pitches (27 strikes) in his rehab debut. He was sitting in the 89-mph range with his sinker, according to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. The 34-year-old veteran righty is aiming to rejoin New York’s rotation mix at some point in the coming weeks as he wraps up his rehabilitation process from knee inflammation.
  • FA Left Fielder #22
    Nationals released OF Franchy Cordero.
Cordero has been cut loose by Washington after hitting .213 (32-for-150) with four homers over 44 games this season for Triple-A Rochester. The 30-year-old’s immense raw power and athleticism wound up being undone by an extreme all-or-nothing approach at the dish once he reached the majors last decade as he consistently struggled to carve out a role at the highest level.
  • NYY Center Fielder #13
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (neck) is in the lineup for Wednesday’s contest against the Royals.
Chisholm is back at third base and batting fifth on Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium following an early exit from Tuesday’s contest with neck tightness. The 27-year-old speedster checked out fine after a hard tag from Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia on a sixth-inning stolen base prompted his removal. He voiced his displeasure following the game, so it’ll be interesting to see if there are any fireworks during Wednesday’s showdown in Kansas City.
  • TEX Left Fielder #36
Wyatt Langford is in left field and batting second on Wednesday evening against the Twins.
Langford managed to bust out of a prolonged slump on Tuesday night when he went 2-for-6 with his 12th round-tripper of the season. It was the first time that he and fellow former top prospect Evan Carter homered in the same ballgame. The 23-year-old will look to keep the momentum going over the final two games in Minnesota before he gets to face an abysmal White Sox pitching staff.
  • TEX Shortstop #5
Corey Seager is at shortstop and batting third on Wednesday night against the Twins.
Seager snapped a six-game hitless streak with a two-hit performance, which also included a pair of walks, as part of Texas’ 16-run explosion on Tuesday night. The 31-year-old fantasy standout will aim to keep the momentum going after breaking out of an extended cold spell at the dish.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #2
Alex Bregman (quad) is undergoing follow-up testing on Wednesday.
Bregman claimed earlier this month to be making lightning-quick progress in his recovery from a significant quad strain. There should be some additional clarity at some point later this week regarding the 31-year-old third baseman’s return timeline once he receives the results of the follow-up imaging.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #56
Spencer Schwellenbach struck out nine in his first career complete game as the Braves topped the Brewers 6-2 on Wednesday.
The Braves had relievers up in the eighth and ninth innings, but Schwellenbach was allowed to continue and retired Jackson Chourio, William Contreras and Jake Bauers on 11 pitches during the final frame. In all, he threw 105 pitches, and he went without a walk for the fifth time in 14 starts this year. Schwellenbach has gone 4-1 in his last six starts to improve to 5-4 with a 3.11 ERA for the season. His next start will likely come a week from today against the Mets.
