Michael Massey went 2-for-4 with a RBI in a 3-0 win over the Nationals on Wednesday.
Offense was limited in this game, but the Royals hit enough to win and keep their playoff hopes alive. Massey has improved his power output this season with a more free-swinging approach to mix with an already pull-happy profile. The Royals have moved him up in the lineup as their season reaches a breaking point as this whole lineup will be playing with their backs against the wall through this week.

Nationals designated RHP Amos Willingham for assignment.
Willingham had a 6.66 ERA in 18 appearances with the Nationals in 2024 before being sent back down in July. The right-hander now hits the waiver wire after the Nationals signed Jorge López to a one-year deal.
  • WAS Relief Pitcher #41
Nationals signed RHP Jorge López to a one-year, $3 million contract.
Lopez was a solid contributor in 2024 with a 2.89 ERA and 50/19 K/BB in his work for the Cubs and Mets in 2024. The right-hander stands a good chance to earn saves at this point, but fantasy managers will want to see what else the Nats do before assuming he’s worthy of a draft selection.

Jorge López is signing with the Nationals, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman says López will be guaranteed $3 million. As long as they don’t stop here, López is a decent enough addition to the Nationals bullpen. The 31-year-old had a 2.89 ERA and a 50/19 K/BB in 53 innings for the Mets and Cubs last season. He probably rates as the current favorite for saves in D.C., but we imagine they’ll add at least one superior option before camp opens.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #22
Garrett Whitlock said Saturday that he will be shifting back to the bullpen this season.
It’s no surprise, but it’s nice that the pitcher is confirming it, since the brass wasn’t yet willing to. Whitlock is coming off internal brace surgery, but he expects to be ready for Opening Day or at least soon afterwards. He unfortunately struggled to stay healthy as a starter, but he has a 2.65 ERA with a 150/29 K/BB in 132 2/3 career innings as a reliever. He might be a fallback in the closer’s role if Liam Hendriks struggles.
  • BOS Shortstop #85
The Red Sox plan to have Marcelo Mayer work out at second and third in addition to playing shortstop this spring.
Mayer isn’t in line for a position change, but the Red Sox want to keep their options open in case he breaks out and Trevor Story happens to be healthy and productive for once. Mayer, the fourth overall pick in the 2021 draft, hit .307/.370/.480 in 77 games for Double-A Portland last season.
  • BOS Second Baseman
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the plan is for Kristian Campbell and Vaughn Grissom to focus on second base this spring and that David Hamilton would see some outfield time.
That’s pretty interesting, since, barring an addition, Hamilton seemed to be the favorite to open up as the second baseman against righties, probably in a platoon role with Romy Gonzalez. It suggests there’s a legitimate chance of Campbell making the team after his breakout season. Grissom is also a candidate to steal away the job, turning Hamilton into a utilityman.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #31
Blue Jays designated RHP Brett de Geus for assignment.
The Jays had to clear a spot on their 40-man roster after signing Jeff Hoffman on Friday and de Geus drew the short straw this time around. The 27-year-old hurler struggled to a 7.15 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and a 7/4 K/BB ratio over 11 1/3 innings between the Blue Jays, Marlins and Mariners during the 2024 season. He could pique another team’s interest on waivers.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #23
Robert Murray of Fansided reports that the Orioles backed out of a three-year, $40 million contract with right-hander Jeff Hoffman due to concerns about his shoulder.
The two sides went as far as having Hoffman take a physical earlier this week, where the O’s found something that they didn’t like and ultimately decided not to move forward. That’s not to say that Hoffman isn’t healthy at the moment or that he won’t play out his contract with the Blue Jays without any trips to the injured list, but it’s at least something that fantasy managers should keep in mind when calling Hoffman’s name in drafts this spring.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #23
Blue Jays signed RHP Jeff Hoffman to a three-year, $33 million contract.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network had reported earlier in the day on Friday that the two sides had productive talks, and now it looks like they were able to push it across the finish line. Hoffman had been seeking something in the range of the three-year, $38 million deal that Clay Holmes inked with the Mets and wound up with something very similar. While he had been exploring options with teams that would allow him to return to the starting rotation, the early expectation is that the Blue Jays signed him to work out of the bullpen — and if that’s the case he should supplant Chad Green as their closer. Either way, it’s good news from a fantasy perspective.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Blue Jays have had “productive talks” on a multi-year contract with free agent right-hander Jeff Hoffman.
The 32-year-old hurler is seeking a deal in the same range as the three-year, $38 million pact that Clay Holmes signed with the Mets earlier this winter. It makes sense, as both are bullpen aces who are looking to transition back to the starting rotation this season. It honestly looks like Hoffman would be a bargain at that price and he would represent a strong addition to the Jays’ rotation if they’re able to get a deal done.
