  • KC Relief Pitcher #66
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said that RHP James McArthur (elbow) won’t pitch again this year.
McArthur went on the injured list with a right elbow strain last week. While the chance of him returning was already slim, he didn’t progress enough in the last week for there to be any chance for him to return now.
  • HOU Left Fielder #20
Chas McCormick, who suffered a fractured left wrist on Sept. 11, is expected to face live pitching in batting practice this weekend.
McCormick is a possibility to return during the postseason, but probably not for the Astros’ initial series. Jason Heyward and Mauricio Dubón are seeing extra at-bats in his place.
  • HOU Left Fielder #44
Yordan Alvarez will not make the trip to Cleveland this weekend as he stays behind to rehab his sprained knee.
Barring a big change of events, Alvarez will miss the rest of the regular season. The Astros say he is improving, so he might be a possibility to DH at the beginning of the postseason.
  • HOU Second Baseman #27
Jose Altuve is absent from Houston’s lineup for the matinee versus the Mariners on Wednesday.
Shae Whitcomb is playing second base, making this his first appearance in the starting lineup since Sept. 1.
  • SEA Right Fielder #17
Mitch Haniger, who last started a game for the Mariners on Sept. 18, is sitting against a lefty again Wednesday.
Haniger was playing mostly versus lefties in recent weeks, but now he’s remaining on the bench even against them. He’s hit .209/.285/.338 in 414 plate appearances, and he’s actually been far worse against lefties (.477 OPS) than righties (.701 OPS). Haniger has a $15.5 million player option to remain with the Mariners next year, courtesy of the three-year, $43.5 million deal the Giants gave him prior to 2023.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #65
Nestor Cortes, who was slated to start for the Yankees on Wednesday, is undergoing an MRI on his elbow, YES’s Jack Curry reports.
This doesn’t seem good. Cortes has yet to be scratched from tonight’s start, but we’re assuming that’s on the way. Cody Poteet reportedly has joined the Yankees and could be activated. Marcus Stroman hasn’t pitched in eight days, so he can provide innings tonight. Clayton Beeter also hasn’t pitched since being called up.
  • OAK Shortstop #5
Jacob Wilson delivered a game-winning single in the ninth as the A’s outlasted the Rangers 5-4 on Tuesday.
Wilson knocked in Zack Gelof, who singled and stole second base. It was Wilson’s only hit of the game, but he had walked earlier. At .231/.298/.308 in 87 plate appearances as a major leaguer, Wilson hasn’t exactly locked up his starting job for next year. Still, even if he isn’t handed anything prior to spring training, the A’s will definitely want him to win the shortstop gig in March.
  • OAK Relief Pitcher #40
Mitch Spence allowed three runs over 4 2/3 innings before being lifted from his start Tuesday against the Rangers.
Spence struck out two and walked two in one of his weaker efforts since joining the rotation. He’s due to pitch again Sunday, but the A’s have yet to confirm their weekend starters. The Rule 5 pick from the Yankees has acquitted himself nicely as a 26-year-old rookie, going 8-9 with a 4.35 ERA.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #17
Nathan Eovaldi yielded four runs — three earned — over seven innings Tuesday in a no-decision versus the A’s.
Eovaldi jumped over the 162-inning mark to qualify for the ERA title for just the third time in his career. He’s not expected to start again Sunday, so he’s probably done for the year at 11-8 with a 3.96 ERA and a 161/41 K/BB in 163 2/3 innings. He’ll likely decline his player option with the Rangers and land another multiyear deal in free agency.
  • TEX Second Baseman #56
Making his first start in a week, Justin Foscue went 0-for-4 as the Rangers’ designated hitter Tuesday against the A’s.
The Rangers have playing time open for Foscue, but he just hasn’t done anything to earn it while going 2-for-38 with 16 strikeouts as a major leaguer. It looks like he’ll open a third season at Triple-A Round Rock in 2025, assuming that he isn’t traded first.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #34
Michael King allowed only one unearned run over five innings Tuesday as the Padres beat the Dodgers 4-2 to clinch a postseason berth.
The Padres could yet win the NL West if they sweep the Dodgers here, but they’ll be playing in October regardless. They won tonight on a 5-4-3 triple play after the Dodgers picked up three straight hits to begin the bottom of the ninth. King moved to 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA. The Padres could start him again on Sunday, but it seems more likely that he’ll be saved for the postseason.
