  • PHI Starting Pitcher #49
Phillies recalled LHP Kolby Allard from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Allard is coming up to start Saturday’s game against the Mets. He has a 3.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in 18 innings over four appearances (three starts) for the Phillies this year. Allard could finish out the year as the fifth starter depending on how he pitches on Saturday.
  • NYY Left Fielder #22
Fighting a sore knee, Juan Soto came off the bench to deliver a go-ahead double in the 10th inning as the Yankees topped the Mariners 4-2 on Friday.
Soto hit a ball 110 mph before taking a seat due to his sore knee, the result of a collision with the wall on Friday. He remains day-to-day heading into Saturday’s game against the Athletics.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #45
Gerrit Cole completed nine innings, allowing one run and two hits, Friday in a no-decision versus the A’s.
If the Yankees offense had performed, this would have been Cole’s first complete game of the year. Alas, the game remained tied into the 10th, resulting in a no-decision for team’s ace. The Yankees did wind up winning then to improve to 9-7 with Cole on the mound. He’s due to face the Orioles in his final regular-season start.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #30
Luke Weaver picked up his second save of the year — and second in eight days — after allowing only the automatic runner to score in the 10th inning Friday against the A’s.
Weaver struck out three of four batters after the Yankees handed him a three-run lead in the top of the 10th. He’s fanned 19 of the 31 batters he’s faced in his last six appearances. Clay Homes wasn’t used at all tonight after pitching the previous two days.
  • OAK Relief Pitcher #70
J.T. Ginn pitched five innings of one-run ball Friday against the Yankees.
Ginn allowed four hits, all of which were singles, and struck out four in the no-decision. His stuff is definitely worse now than it was a couple of years ago when the A’s acquired him, but he has a good enough idea of what he’s doing on the mound to perhaps last a bottom-of-the-rotation guy going forward. He’ll likely face the Rangers in his final start of 2024.
  • CLE Third Baseman #11
José Ramírez went 3-for-4 with his 36th homer and 40th steal Friday in the Guardians’ 5-1 takedown of the Cardinals.
No one much cares about 40/40 at this point, but Ramírez has turned in another historic season and has pretty much clinched his place in the Hall of Fame. He’s currently fifth in MLB in steals, eighth in homers, tied for fourth in RBI and 13th in steals.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #39
Ben Lively threw five innings of one-run ball Friday in a win over the Cardnals.
Lively, who had been 8-17 with a 5.05 ERA through his age-31 season, moved to 13-9 with a 3.80 ERA this year. There’s not a lot to like about his strikeout or home run rates, but he’ll probably be the Guardians’ fourth starter if the team advances in the postseason.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #62
Eric Sabrowski picked up his first career save for throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in a 5-1 win over the Cardinals on Friday.
The 26-year-old Sabrowski was making his sixth big-league appearance. He’s up to 10 scoreless innings with a 13/3 K/BB after this one. Emmanuel Clase had pitched the last two days, so the Guardians might have turned to Cade Smith had there been a save situation after eight innings tonight. However, since it was a four-run game, Sabrowski got to finish.
  • STL Starting Pitcher #44
Kyle Gibson dropped to 8-8 after allowing four runs — three earned — in six innings Friday in a loss to the Guardians.
The Cardinals’ inability to develop pitches has resulted in them spending significant dollars to add Steven Matz, Gibson and Lance Lynn the last two offseasons, and they’ve truly gotten what they deserved. While Sonny Gray, Gibson and Lynn have all met any expectations the Cardinals should have had this year, the club will be vacationing in October for a second straight year. Gibson will finish up his season with a road start against the Giants on Friday.
  • MIN Right Fielder #9
Trevor Larnach went 2-for-5 and hit a go-ahead single in the 12th as the Twins defeated the Red Sox 4-2 in 12 innings on Friday.
Neither team scored in the first two extra innings tonight, but the Twins finally broke through in the third frame and the Red Sox responded with just one run in what had previously been a 1-1 game. Larnach’s go-ahead hit was a weak grounder, but it got the job done and immediately denied the light-hitting Red Sox the three-game sweep they needed to have any shot at reaching the postseason.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher #22
Griffin Jax wound up with his 10th save after allowing only the automatic runner to score in the 12th innings Friday against the Red Sox.
The Twins wanted to avoid Jax tonight, but the third extra inning resulted in him making his fourth appearance in five days. He got the job done, but he’ll certainly need Saturday off after this. Jhoan Duran should be unavailable, too, since he pitched a scoreless eighth in his third appearance in four days. Cole Sands might be next in line for a save.
