Jared Jones threw seven innings of two-run ball and struck out nine as the Pirates topped the Nationals 7-3 on Sunday.
CJ Abrams led off the top of the first with a homer today, but it wasn’t a sign of things to come. Jones allowed just three more hits and walked none in one of his best showings since the beginning of the year. He touched 99.9 mph and average 98.0 mph with his fastball while producing 15 missed swings and a 39% CSW. Jones will likely make his next start against the Royals on six days’ rest.

Alec Burleson went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI on Monday, powering the Cardinals to an 8-3 win over the Marlins.
Burleson reached base safely in four of his five plate appearances during Monday’s series opener including a game-tying fifth-inning single and a go-ahead knock in the seventh inning. The 26-year-old is hitting .393 (11-for-28) with one homer, six RBI and one steal over his last seven games.
Wheeler placed on IL with blood clot in shoulder
With Zack Wheeler headed to the IL because of a blood clot in his shoulder, James Schiano expects an extended absence while Philadelphia loses a vital part of its rotation.
  • MIA Center Fielder #87
Jakob Marsee went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI in Monday’s loss to the Cardinals.
The storybook start continues for Marsee. The 24-year-old rookie put Miami on the scoreboard in the opening frame with an RBI sacrifice fly before adding a game-tying double in the sixth inning. He’s put together a sublime start to his big-league career, batting .375 (21-for-56) with four homers, 17 RBI and six steals in 18 games since arriving in the big leagues back on August 1.
  • STL Relief Pitcher #52
Matthew Liberatore gave up three runs over five innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Libertatore struck out five and only issued one walk. It was a solid bounce-back effort after giving up five runs over 6 1/3 frames his last time out against the lowly Pirates. He doesn’t offer elite strikeout upside, but Liberatore has been a solid back-end rotation option for fantasy purposes this season with a 4.13 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 93/29 K/BB ratio across 122 innings (23 starts). He’ll face the Rays on Sunday to close out a two-start week.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #39
Eury Pérez was charged with three runs — one earned — over 4 1/3 innings on Monday in a loss to the Cardinals.
Pérez was all over the place in this one, striking out six batters while also handing out four free passes and uncorking four wild pitches. It also marked the third consecutive start where he surrendered at least three runs. The dynamic 22-year-old has flashed top-of-the-rotation upside at times this season in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he’s been stuck in a rough patch since the All-Star break. He’ll aim for better results on Sunday when he caps a two-start week with a home matchup against the Blue Jays.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #9
Jack Flaherty fanned nine over seven innings in the Tigers’ 10-0 shutout of the Astros on Monday.
Flaherty has been terribly inconsistent, but it’s nice to see he can still do this on occasion. The nine strikeouts matched a season high, which he’d already achieved four times. He won just the seventh time opposite 12 losses. The Tigers are 8-17 when he pitches and 66-36 the rest of the time. He’ll face the Royals on Sunday.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #41
Spencer Arrighetti gave up five runs over five innings Monday in a loss to the Tigers.
Arrighetti loaded the bases with none out in the second, but he pitched out of it without any damage, and he was behind just 1-0 on a Wenceel Pérez homer heading into the fifth. However, with one out in that frame, he gave up a double, a walk, a triple, a homer, a walk and a single consecutively. He only got out the inning because a Dillon Dingler liner was caught on a dive by Carlos Correa and turned into an easy double play. Arrighetti has given up 13 earned runs over 13 2/3 innings in his three starts since coming off the injured list. Those hoping he’d offer some mixed league value probably ought to move on.
  • DET 3rd Baseman #33
Colt Keith went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and his first stolen base of the year Monday against the Astros.
Keith went 7-for-8 stealing bases in a rookie, but he’d tried just one so far this year. The homer was his 11th, four of which have come this month. He’s batting .354/.418/.625 in 55 plate appearances during August.
  • HOU Left Fielder #4
Jesús Sánchez went hitless for a sixth straight start Monday against the Tigers.
Sánchez hit in eight of his first nine games for the Astros, but he’s currently in a 0-for-22 slump that’s lowered his average to .242. He’ll almost surely be on the bench Tuesday against lefty Tarik Skubal.
  • TOR 1st Baseman #27
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was removed from Monday’s series opener against the Pirates with left hamstring tightness.
Guerrero was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning after going 0-for-2 with an RBI. He also made a phenomenal defensive play at first base, extending into a full split to dig out a short hop throw. It’s possible he hurt himself on that specific play. He’ll presumably head for further evaluation and testing to determine the severity of the ailment. There should be an update from the Blue Jays following the contest.
  • NYM Catcher #4
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said late Sunday that Francisco Alvarez will undergo an MRI on his right thumb.
Alvarez made an early exit from Sunday’s game against the Mariners after jamming his right thumb. He will undergo further testing to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status prior to Tuesday’s series opener against the Nationals.
