  • CWS Third Baseman #20
Miguel Vargas (eye) is back in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Red Sox.
It’s a positive sign to see Vargas back at third base and batting eighth after missing a pair of contests following an on-field collision earlier this week in which he suffered a left eye abrasion.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #47
Griffin Channing allowed only three hits over six innings in the Angels’ 5-0 shutout of the White Sox on Tuesday.
The White Sox were shut out for the 19th time this season. Only the 2019 Marlins (22), the 2022 Tigers (22) and the 2008 Nationals (21) have been shut out more often since 2000. It’s the first time since May 23, 2023 that Canning has been part of a shutout. He’s likely to make his next start Sunday against the Astros.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #65
Davis Martin dropped to 0-5 after allowing three runs in five innings Tuesday against the Angels.
If it makes him feel any better, Martin still likely would have lost tonight if he had allowed just one run. As for us, we’re mostly disappointed that we never got a Davis Martin-Davis Daniel matchup this season. Martin will likely face the Angels again next week.
  • LAA First Baseman #34
A day after hitting his first big-league homer, Eric Wagaman delivered his second as part of a 3-for-4 game against the White Sox on Tuesday.
Wagaman launched a 434-foot homer off Enyel De Los Santos, giving him as many homers in two days as Anthony Rendon has hit in two years. The Angels probably weren’t looking at the 27-year-old as being in their plans for 2025 when they promoted him a week ago, but five extra-base hits in seven games is going to earn him some consideration.
  • HOU Left Fielder #30
Kyle Tucker went 2-for-4 with a walk and drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th as the Astros edged the Padres 4-3 on Tuesday.
Two bad calls went against the Astros late in this one, but they wound up not mattering. Tucker plated the lone run in the 10th with a single to left. He’s hitting .290 with one homer and five walks in 39 plate appearances since coming off the injured list.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #58
Hunter Brown turned in a quality start against the Padres on Tuesday, allowing two runs in six innings.
Both runs came on Manny Machado’s homer in the sixth. Brown has given the Astros four quality starts since he last won on Aug. 17. Expectations are that he’ll make his next start Monday versus the Astros.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #71
Josh Hader took a cheap blown save while retiring all four batters he faced Tuesday against the Padres.
Hader was brought in with a runner on third and two outs in the eighth and issued a wild pitch that scored the tying run. He didn’t have any further difficulties, but it still resulted in his third blown save of the year. Fortunately, he wound up with the win after the Astros took the lead in the 10th. Héctor Neris picked up the save in the bottom of the inning. It moved Hader to 8-7 on the season. He has as many wins this year as he did the previous three years combined.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #34
Michael King tossed seven innings and allowed two runs Tuesday against the Astros.
We’ll see what October holds, but the Padres couldn’t possibly have asked for anything more from King through 5 1/2 months after making him the primary return in the Juan Soto deal. He has a 3.04 ERA and 198 strikeouts over 168 2/3 innings through 30 starts. He’ll probably make his final regular-season start against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
  • SD Second Baseman #4
Luis Arraez went 0-for-5 and struck out for the second straight game Tuesday against the Astros.
Arraez striking out in two straight is pretty much the same as DiMaggio hitting in 56 straight. Arraez was iffy for tonight’s game after hurting his knee sliding into home on Monday, but he was able to DH without incident. He was removed for a pinch-runner in the 10th after a fielder’s choice.
  • COL Starting Pitcher #18
Ryan Feltner limited the Diamondbacks to one run in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday in the Rockies’ 8-2 victory.
Congrats to Feltner, who won in Coors Field for the first time since Aug. 9, 2002. He’d since gone winless in 21 starts in front of the home fans. Feltner’s peripherals suggest that he’s a perfectly fine No. 3 starter at this point of his career, but with Coors holding him back and the Rockies likely to have little interest in trading him, not a lot figures to change in 2025. He’ll face the Cardinals next week in what will probably be his final start of the season.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #52
Jordan Montgomery gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Rockies on Tuesday to lose in his first start since Aug. 21.
The Diamondbacks didn’t do Montgomery any favors by having his return to the rotation come in Coors Field. He actually induced 17 missed swings tonight and had an average exit velocity against of 80.4 mph, so the outing was more encouraging than the line suggests. He’ll probably start again Sunday against the Brewers.
