  • SEA Shortstop #23
Mariners designated INF/OF Terrin Vavra for assignment.
Vavra was with the M’s for less than a week after being claimed off of waivers from the Orioles. He’s talented enough that he could once again pique another team’s interest on waivers.
  • SEA Center Fielder #44
Julio Rodríguez went 2-for-4 with a homer and a walk Saturday as the Mariners edged the Rangers 5-4.
Randy Arozarena had the game-ending hit after Rodríguez was intentionally walked in the ninth. Rodríguez’s homer was hit 446 feet off Max Scherzer. He’s 7-for-13 with two homers in the series against the Rangers, and his current .711 OPS is his highest mark since he went 2-for-7 with a double in the first two games of the season back in March.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #36
Logan Gilbert surrendered four runs in six innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Rangers.
Gilbert, who struck out seven, was great aside from a pair of two-run homers. The second of those, a 351-foot fly off the bat of Marcus Semien, would have been a homer in just nine of the 30 major league ballparks. It was enough to leave Gilbert with another no-decision. He’s 7-11 with a 3.24 ERA in 30 starts this season. Last year, he was 13-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 32 starts.
  • SEA Relief Pitcher #75
Andrés Muñoz got a win in relief for pitching a perfect ninth against the Rangers on Saturday.
Muñoz pitched a perfect ninth in a tie game before the Mariners won the game in the bottom of the inning. Muñoz also pitched Wednesday and Friday, so he’ll certainly be off Sunday now. Collin Snider or JT Chargois might be a candidate to pick up a save then.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #31
Max Scherzer pitched four innings of two-run ball against the Mariners in his return from the injured list Saturday.
It wasn’t exactly vintage Scherzer, as he struck out only two and gave up a long homer to Julio Rodríguez. Still, his stuff was pretty much the same as it was before he got hurt. He should be worth using in mixed leagues next weekend in a rematch against the Mariners.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #35
Jack Leiter allowed two runs over four innings in relief of Max Scherzer against the Mariners on Saturday.
It’s the same line that Scherzer had, so that seems like something worth bragging about. Leiter struck out six and averaged 97.3 mph with his 35 fastballs tonight, which is a bit of a step up. The Rangers currently appear to have no plan to slide him back into the rotation, but any injury to a starter would likely change that.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #35
Justin Verlander picked up his first win since coming off the IL by throwing five innings of two-run ball Saturday against the Angels.
Verlander still wasn’t at his best tonight, but he had enough to quiet the Angels lineup, even as he finished with just two strikeouts. Verlander had lost four straight since returning from his neck injury last month, giving up 19 earned runs over 17 2/3 innings in the process. He’ll get to face the Angels again, this time at home, in his next start Friday.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #55
Ryan Pressly pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his fourth save Saturday.
Josh Hader was unavailable after working the previous two days. It’s actually the first time all year that Pressly has been asked to record more than three outs. He gave up a pair of singles, but thanks to an inherited runner being thrown out at home in the eighth and a double play in the ninth, he wound up throwing just 12 pitches anyway.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #31
Tyler Anderson yielded four runs in five innings Saturday in a loss to the Astros.
Anderson has given up 22 earned runs over 30 2/3 innings in his last six starts, taking his ERA from 2.99 to 3.60. He’ll unfortunately miss the White Sox series and face the Astros again next time out, making him a weak play in mixed leagues.
  • HOU Left Fielder #30
Pinch-hitting for Mauricio Dubón, Kyle Tucker homered Saturday for the first time since returning from a fractured shin.
Tucker, who returned to right field on Friday after DHing in his first four games back, was excluded from the starting lineup tonight for the third time in eight games since he came off the IL. It’s awfully disappointing how he’s been used, but the homer tonight, his 20th in 67 games this year, helps a bit.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #44
Joe Musgrove fanned eight in six innings and combined with two relievers on an 8-0 shutout of the Giants on Saturday.
Musgrove gave up three homers and six runs to the same team last time out. Tonight, the Giants mustered just three singles off him and two more against the bullpen, never coming through with an extra-base hit in the game. They also never drew a walk. Musgrove moved to 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA in seven starts since coming off the IL. He’ll face the lowly White Sox next week.
