Yankees claimed OF Duke Ellis off waivers from Seattle Mariners.

The Yankees recently picked up Cam Eden from the Blue Jays and sent him to Triple-A. Ellis is basically the same player; he can help out as a September/postseason pinch-runner and really shouldn’t have any role otherwise. He made his major league debut with the White Sox earlier this season, going 0-for-4 with four steals in eight games. He’s hit .235/.315/.336 with 51 steals in the minors this year.

Rockies released LHP Austin Gomber.

Gomber has been officially cut loose after passing through waivers unclaimed earlier this week. The 31-year-old southpaw was the centerpiece of the ill-fated Nolan Arenado trade with the Cardinals back in 2021 and never quite blossomed into a front-of-the-rotation arm. He struggled to a bloated 7.49 ERA across 57 2/3 innings (12 starts) this season. He was lit up for seven runs over three innings on Tuesday against the Dodgers in his final start with the Rockies.

Evan Carter

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Evan Carter has been diagnosed with a fractured right wrist and will likely miss the remainder of the season.

It’s a brutal development for the Rangers, and fantasy managers, as Carter was in the midst of a strong season — when healthy. The 22-year-old former top prospect, who suffered the injury on Thursday when he was hit by a pitch, will likely miss the final five weeks of the season and finishes with a .728 OPS with five homers and 14 steals in 63 games. He’s shown flashes of immense fantasy potential over the last few years, but continues to be snake-bitten by injuries.

Carson Whisenhunt

Giants recalled LHP Carson Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento.

Whisenhunt is not a recommended streaming option for fantasy purposes when he faces the red-hot Brewers on Friday night. The 24-year-old lefty will replace an injured Landen Roupp (knee) in San Francisco’s rotation over the final five weeks. He offers enough strikeout potential to be worth monitoring in deeper mixed leagues, but he’s more of a wait-and-see prospect in shallow formats.

Landen Roupp

SF Relief Pitcher #65

Giants placed RHP Landen Roupp on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 21, with left knee inflammation.

The extremely encouraging development here is that it appears Roupp didn’t suffer a more serious knee injury when he had to be carted off the field during Wednesday’s start against the Padres. The 26-year-old righty is likely done for the remainder of the season, but the fact that an initial MRI didn’t reveal an ACL tear or structural damage puts him on track to be ready for spring training. He’ll likely undergo further testing, but the initial diagnosis is encouraging.

Herrera has been removed from Arizona’s 40-man roster to make room for starting backstop Gabriel Moreno to return from the 60-day injured list. The 28-year-old catcher batted .187 (31-for-166) with two homers and 17 RBI in 57 games this season for Arizona.

Moreno has been out since mid-June recovering from a fractured right index finger. He’ll stabilize Arizona’s catching situation, but he’s been a significant disappointment from a pure fantasy perspective this season with a .738 OPS and five homers in 53 games.
