Giants recalled RHP Camilo Doval from Triple-A Sacramento.
San Francisco was clearly sending a message earlier this month when Doval was surprisingly optioned to the minors, but they’ve seen what they needed to give him another shot back in the majors. The hard-throwing 27-year-old former stopper likely isn’t getting the full-time closing gig back from Ryan Walker, who hasn’t allowed an earned run in 10 consecutive appearances since July 30. However, he figures to be an option in high-leverage spots for the Giants and could vulture the occasional save chance when Walker isn’t available for workload reasons.

Phillies placed RHP Joe Ross on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 21, with back spasms.
No word yet on how much time Ross figures to miss. Back issues can be complicated matters, but we’re not anticipating a lengthy stint on the shelf. The 32-year-old righty has registered a serviceable 5.28 ERA across 44 1/3 innings (31 appearances) this season in his Phillies debut.
Dodgers relievers to add following Scott's injury
With the Dodgers "all but a lock" to add a reliever before the trade deadline following Tanner Scott's injury, Eric Samulski assesses which arms could be in line for precious save opportunities.
  • CHC Center Fielder #4
Pete Crow-Armstrong (knee) is back in the lineup for Tuesday’s showdown against the Royals.
Crow-Armstrong is back in center field and batting fifth following a one-game absence due to a right knee contusion. It doesn’t appear to be a serious concern moving forward. The 23-year-old burgeoning fantasy superstar has put together a remarkable season, batting .270/.306/.556 with 68 runs scored, 26 homers, 72 RBI and 28 steals across 413 plate appearances over 98 games.
  • DET Right Fielder #30
Kerry Carpenter (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo.
Carpenter will likely only require a handful of tune-up contests to get back up to speed after hitting the shelf back in early July with a right hamstring strain. The 27-year-old slugging corner outfielder should rejoin Detroit’s potent lineup at some point later this week.
  • ATH Right Fielder #32
Athletics recalled OF Colby Thomas from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Thomas will get an extended opportunity with the Athletics in the wake of rookie sensation Denzel Clarke hitting the shelf with an adductor strain. The 24-year-old top prospect struggled last month in his first taste of the majors, but his potent power/speed combination makes him a potential impact fantasy contributor, especially if he’s going to play everyday. He’s worthy of a speculative pickup in extremely deep mixed leagues and AL-only formats.
  • ATH Left Fielder #31
Athletics recalled OF Carlos Cortes from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Cortes receives his first call-up to the big leagues with Denzel Clarke landing on the injured list with an adductor strain. The 28-year-old outfielder was added to the Athletics’ 40-man roster last week and has put up some monster numbers this season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, batting .322/.414/.603 with 17 homers in 71 games.
  • ATH Center Fielder #1
Athletics placed OF Denzel Clarke on the 10-day injured list with an adductor strain.
Clarke is facing a multi-week absence after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 adductor strain. The 25-year-old rookier has been a revelation this season in center field, making some of the most incredible catches in recent memory. His absence creates an opportunity for prospect Colby Thomas to play regularly at the highest level.
  • ATH Shortstop #10
Athletics placed INF Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list with a fractured right hand.
Initial X-rays came back negative, but Muncy underwent additional imaging on Tuesday that revealed the fracture. No word yet whether he’ll require surgery. There’s a strong possibility his rookie campaign is over. The 22-year-old infielder suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch during Monday’s game against the Rangers. It’ll likely be veteran Luis Urías taking over at the hot corner in his absence.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #27
Aaron Nola (rib, ankle) threw a 42-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday.
Nola will progress to facing hitters on Friday in a live batting practice session, which puts him on track to kick off a minor league rehab assignment by the end of July. The 32-year-old righty has been on the shelf since mid-May recovering from ankle and rib issues.
  • BAL Catcher #35
Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters Adley Rutschman (oblique) could possibly be activated this weekend.
Rutschman will kick off his rehab assignment on Tuesday night with Triple-A Norfolk and it sounds like there’s optimism he’ll make it back to Baltimore later this week. The 27-year-old backstop has been out since late June recovering from a left oblique strain. His absence has created a Grand Canyon-sized hole in the Orioles’ catching mix over the last month.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #24
Zach Eflin (back) will be activated from the injured list to start on Wednesday against the Guardians.
Eflin wrapped up a minor league rehab assignment over the weekend and will take the ball for his first start since June 28. The 31-year-old righty has struggled to a lackluster 5.95 ERA across 62 innings (12 starts) this season, but still figures to be one of the bigger arms on the move by the end of the month. He’s in line to make at least two starts before the trade deadline as he auditions for contenders.
