Brayan Bello gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

It’s Bello’s first loss since June 25, partly because he’s been solid of late but also because he’s been getting plenty of run support. This is the sixth time this season that he’s allowed at least five runs. He’s still going to be a long-term starter for Boston, but his ceiling seems pretty low based on how he’s thrown this year. He’ll get the Blue Jays next.

Byron Buxton (hand) returned to the Twins’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against Paul Skenes and the Pirates.

Buxton was pulled from Wednesday’s contest after he was drilled by a pitch on his left hand. Fortunately, X-rays came back for any fractures though and after a day off on Thursday he’s ready to return to his regular spot atop the Pirates’ lineup on Friday evening. The All-Star outfielder is slashing a terrific .270/.338/.544 with 20 homers, 53 RBI and 17 stolen bases (in 17 attempts) through his first 75 games this season.

Blue Jays selected the contract of RHP Tommy Nance from Triple-A Buffalo.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues this season for the 34-year-old right-hander. Nance had registered a 5.74 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 42/7 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings in 27 outings out of the bullpen at Triple-A Buffalo. He’s taking the place of the injured Ryan Burr (shoulder).

Blue Jays placed RHP Ryan Burr on the 60-day injured list with a right rotator cuff strain.

You know it’s bad when the team skips over the 15-day injured list and places a player directly onto the 60-day IL. Burr suffered the injury during Wednesday’s outing against the White Sox. It sounds like he may be shelved for the remainder of the regular season, though technically he would be eligible to return in mid-September. Tommy Nance was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo to take his place in the Jays’ bullpen.

Ha-Seong Kim is not in the Rays’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Red Sox.

It looks to be just a routine night off for Kim as the continues to get eased into full-time action following his return from the injured list. Taylor Walls will start in his place at shortstop and will bat sixth for the Rays against Red Sox’ right-hander Hunter Dobbins on Friday evening at Fenway Park.

COL 2nd Baseman #39

Thairo Estrada was held out of the Rockies’ lineup for a third consecutive game on Friday due to a left thumb injury.

There haven’t been any rumblings about a return trip to the injured list for the 29-year-old infielder, and if it hasn’t happened by now it probably isn’t going to before the All-Star break. Kyle Farmer will start in his place at second base and will bat eighth for the Rockies against Reds’ rookie right-hander Chase Burns on Friday evening in Cincinnati.

Angels recalled LHP Jake Eder from Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 26-year-old southpaw will provide a fresh arm to an Angels’ bullpen that has been heavily taxed recently. Eder has pitched well in five appearances with the Halos this season, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 4/4 K/BB ratio across 5 1/3 innings of work.

Angels optioned RHP Jack Kochanowicz to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 24-year-old right-hander was shelled for eight runs over 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Thursday. While it looks punitive, that he was optioned out based on that poor start, this could be a procedural thing where the Angels simply want to add another arm to their bullpen over the final three days before the All-Star break. Carson Fulmer did pitch well in relief on Thursday though and could be a capable replacement if the Angels choose to go that route coming out of the break.

Dunning pitched on two of the last three days for the Rangers and was unlikely to be available on Friday, so he was swapped out for a fresh arm in Caleb Boushley. He could get another opportunity with the big league club in relatively short order. In five appearances with the Rangers this season, Dunning holds a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 10/5 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings.
