  • SEA Manager
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mariners are expected to fire manager Scott Servais.
Servais was in his ninth season as the Mariners’ manager, compiling a 680-642 record (.514 winning percentage) since being hired in 2016. In 2022 he guided the Mariners to the postseason, which ended a 21-year postseason drought that, at the time, had been the longest in North American professional sports. The Mariners seemed destined to make another playoff appearance this season before things went sideways in a hurry, turning a 10-game lead in the American League West into a five-game deficit in the standings. That proved to be a bridge too far for an organization that has yet to win a division title. a franchise that is still in search of its first pennant. Dan Wilson will take his place; although Wilson, who served as a special assignment coordinator during spring training, has never been on a big-league coaching staff or managed at any level. The former Mariners catcher will take over a team that is 64-64, five games out of a playoff spot, and on a three-game losing streak.
  • SD Second Baseman #4
Luis Arraez doubled twice and tripled Friday as the Padres topped the Diamondbacks 5-3.
Shohei Ohtani went 4-for-5 to raise his average to .309, but Arraez snapped out his mini-slump to retain most of his edge in the race for the NL batting title. He’s batting .314 after collecting three extra-base hits for the fifth time in his career. He last did so on June 3, 2023.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #11
Yu Darvish yielded three runs in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a win over the D-backs.
Darvish struck out four and walked three tonight. Seven of the 14 balls in play against him were hit hard, but he was able to hold Arizona to a solo homer and two singles anyway. We don’t have a ton of faith in him at this point, but at least he only needs to be the Padres’ fourth starter in the postseason. He ends the regular season 7-3 with a 3.31 ERA.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #75
Robert Suarez delivered a hitless ninth against the D-backs on Friday for his 36th save.
Jason Adam got four outs to set him up. Suarez has had a shaky September, but he’s now converted three straight save chances after blowing three of his previous five. He’ll probably get Saturday off after throwing 22 pitches tonight, but he could be in line for another chance Sunday.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #29
Merrill Kelly took his first loss of the season after giving up five runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday against the Padres,
Even though the Diamondbacks were 5-5 in his starts, Kelly entered tonight with a flawless 5-0 record. He matched his season high with eight strikeouts, but he gave up eight hits, three of which went for extra bases, to conclude the regular season 5-1 with a 4.03 ERA. There’s still a chance that he’ll start a postseason game next week, but it’s smaller now than it was a few hours ago. Regardless, the D-backs will almost certainly exercise his $7 million option to keep him around in 2025.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #34
With their postseason spot locked up, the Padres will not start Michael King against the D-backs on Sunday.
They’ll go with Randy Vásquez on Saturday and Martín Pérez on Sunday. As a result, King ends the regular season 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA. He’ll likely join Dylan Cease and Joe Musgrove as the Padres’ slated starters in their home Wild Card series.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #7
The Giants have scratched Blake Snell and will start Tristan Beck in Saturday’s game versus the Cardinals.
Snell’s season ends at 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA and a 145/44 K/BB in 104 innings. All signs point to him opting out of his deal with the Giants and returning to free agency, where he’ll, uhhhh, surely enjoy a much more robust market than he did in coming off a Cy Young campaign in 2023.
  • WAS Starting Pitcher #32
Trevor Williams shut out the Phillies for five innings and struck out five in the Nationals’ 9-1 win Friday.
Williams will be an awfully interesting free agent this winter after finishing the season 6-1 with a stunning 2.03 ERA in 13 starts. He allowed a total of three homers in 66 2/3 innings. Last year, he gave up 34 to top the NL while amassing a 5.55 ERA in 144 1/3 innings.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #55
Ranger Suárez was tagged for six runs in two innings by the Nationals in a loss Friday.
Suárez was in the Cy Young mix through the All-Star break this season, but he lost five of his final seven decisions to finish 12-8 with a 3.46 ERA in 27 starts. Of course, none of that matters nearly as much to the Phillies as what he does next month.
  • WAS Left Fielder #36
Stone Garrett went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double, three RBI and three runs scored in his 2024 debut Friday against the Phillies.
Good for Garrett, who hit just three homers in 79 minor league games this season as he made his way back from a broken leg. The Nats called him up Tuesday and could send him right back down with Andrés Chapparo set to return from the paternity list. Hopefully, though, this will get him a chance to stay with the team through the weekend
  • PHI Center Fielder #9
Austin Hays finished 2-for-3 with a homer that accounted for the Phillies’ lone run Friday against the Nationals.
Hays has started all three games since coming off the IL, including two against righties, so it looks like the Phillies are considering playing him regularly over Johan Rojas in the postseason, even though such a move would weaken the outfield defense by putting Brandon Marsh in center. Fortunately, Hays is no slouch in left. It’s just a matter of whether he’ll hit enough to justify it. He’s at .256/.275/.397 in 80 plate appearances for the Phillies and .255/.303/.396 in 255 plate appearances overall.
