Josh Smith went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run against the Astros on Monday.
Smith’s home run was his 12th of the year. He hit a game-winning walkoff home run off Caleb Ferguson in the 10th inning. Smith is hitting .278 with an .811 OPS and 48 RBI on the year.

Jhoan Duran pitched a clean inning to earn the save against the Cubs on Wednesday.
There were rumors swirling during this game that Duran would be unavailable with the same illness that kept him out of Tuesday’s game. That turned out to not be the case as made quick work of the Cubs with an eight-pitch ninth inning. He now has a minuscule 1.52 ERA in what’s been another dominant season for the flame-thrower.
Smoltz talks transition to golf from baseball
Eight-time MLB All-Star John Smoltz sits down with Dan Patrick to discuss his transition from the mound to the golf course, his relationship with social media, and the changing usage of pitchers in the league.
  • MIN Right Fielder #38
Matt Wallner went 2-for-3 with a solo home run on Wednesday against the Cubs.
Wallner made Cade Horton pay for a two-strike sweeper in the fourth inning that caught way too much of the plate for a loud solo home run that left the bat at 113 mph. That wound up being the last run scored in what became an impressive showing by both team’s bullpens. Granted he missed a chunk of time due to injury, but this was Wallner’s first multi-hit game since April 16th and he tries to get going before the All-Star break.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #22
Cade Horton allowed six hits and four runs with two walks and five strikeouts across 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday.
The lack of useful options in Horton’s repertoire has come back to bite him a bit during his last few starts. Here, he got caught struggling to spot his changeups against left-handed batters. That’s the only pitch he usually has for them besides his fastball and a smattering of curveballs. So, he got caught in a few too many long at-bats which drove up his pitch count and wound up hanging a 1-2 sweeper in the heart of the plate to Matt Wallner which he crushed for a home run. Still, he managed to force an impressive 19 swings-and-misses and at least three with four different pitches. The stuff is there, Horton just needs more refinement. That should come with time.
  • BOS Center Fielder #16
Jarren Duran went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a walk in Boston’s 10-2 rout of Colorado on Wednesday.
It wasn’t clear if Duran would play tonight after the Red Sox said Masataka Yoshida would DH and Roman Anthony would start in left, but Duran got the call over Ceddanne Rafaela in center. That’s not an alignment that should continue, but it seems like they’re going to be sensible enough to keep playing Duran against righties. He’s 11-for-30 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI in eight games this month, and he’s hitting .289/.358/.498 against righties for the year.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #54
Lucas Giolito struck out six over six scoreless innings in a victory over the Rockies on Wednesday.
A home series versus the Rockies was just what Boston’s pitching staff needed. Of course, Giolito was already throwing well coming into this one, and he’s now 6-1 with a 3.36 ERA. The Red Sox should try to capitalize and send him to an actual contender before the deadline, though this recent stretch against weak clubs might convince them they still have a shot. Giolito will probably start Boston’s first game after the break against the Cubs.
  • COL Starting Pitcher #49
Antonio Senzatela fell to 3-13 after allowing four runs in five innings Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Mike Maroth, who was 9-21 for the awful 2003 Tigers, is the only pitcher to take 20 losses since 1980. At this point, it’d be an upset if Senzatela stays healthy and fails to become the second pitcher on that list. After all, the Rockies are probably only going to subtract talent at the deadline.
  • COL Relief Pitcher #54
Brought in with the Rockies down 5-2 in the eighth, Seth Halvorsen gave up five runs without recording an out Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Ouch. The Rockies have Thursday off and obviously don’t generate a lot of save chances, so they were just trying to get their primary closer some work. Halvorsen previously gave up four runs on May 19 to raise his ERA to 5.30. He’d since posted a 2.65 ERA over 17 appearances, yet tonight undid all that and now his ERA is right back up to 5.30.
  • BOS 2nd Baseman #23
Romy Gonzalez homered, walked and scored twice against the Rockies on Wednesday.
Gonzalez’s homer off Seth Halvorsen was hit 368 feet to left. He earlier had a 409-foot flyout that would have been a homer in 20 ballparks. This was Boston’s first game with Gonzalez in the lineup and Abraham Toro out of it against a right-hander since Gonzalez came off the IL on June 2, so perhaps the tide is starting to turn. Gonzalez will be of interest in mixed leagues if the Red Sox start to play him regularly. He’s batting an incredible .338/.372/.603 in 148 plate appearances.
  • HOU Center Fielder #6
Jake Meyers was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup with right calf tightness.
It qualifies as an encouraging update that Meyers isn’t dealing with anything more serious after he aggravated a lingering calf issue during pregame warmups ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Guardians. There should be an update on his status ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Rangers. It wouldn’t be shocking if he sat out the rest of the first half leading into next week’s All-Star break.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #41
Andrew Abbott scattered six hits and allowed just one run with two walks and five strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings in a 7-2 win over the Marlins on Wednesday.
What a start from Abbott. The Marlins managed just two hits that left the infield until the eighth inning and he was in complete control throughout. He forced 15 swings-and-misses in total with five each coming from his fastball and changeup. It’s been a magical first half for Abbott who is heading to Atlanta for his first All-Star game with a 2.07 ERA
