  • STL Shortstop #0

Masyn Winn blasted a two-run homer on Sunday night, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Cardinals to victory over the Cubs.
The 22-year-old shortstop opened the scoring in the ballgame with a 402-foot (100.5-mph EV) two-run blast off of Justin Steele in the fourth inning. That was the extent of the Cardinals’ offense in the game. Winn finished the night 1-for-4 and is now hitting .279/.325/.414 with nine long balls and 41 RBI on the season.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets are among the teams that have expressed interest in Marlins’ right-hander Sandy Alcantara.
Puma also notes that the Marlins’ price is steep on the 29-year-old hurler. The Mets have a strong familiarity with Alcantara as he pitches in the same division, and they see him several times per season. It sounds like the Mets view an upgrade to their rotation as a luxury at the trade deadline and not something that they’re desperately seeking.
Jones' power production can't be ignored
James Schiano evaluates the potential of New York Yankees top prospect Spencer Jones, explaining why the 24-year-old outfielder's power production can't be ignored as he's compiled 29 home runs in the minors this season.
  • BAL Catcher #41
Orioles sent C Chadwick Tromp outright to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 30-year-old backstop had been designated for assignment after being activated from the injured list, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra catching depth for the O’s.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #52
Friday’s scheduled contest between the Guardians and Royals in Kansas City was postponed due to inclement weather.
The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday. Anticipate Friday’s scheduled starters — Michael Wacha and Gavin Williams — to work in one of the games for each of their respective clubs on Saturday.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #65
Giants’ manager Bob Melvin told reporters on Friday that he’s hopeful Landen Roupp (elbow) will only need to miss two starts.
Melvin noted that Roupp’s MRI did not reveal any structural damage. It sounds like the team plans to go with a bullpen game in what would have been Hayden Birdsong’s spot in the rotation on Sunday, then they’ll re-evaluate and decide how to handle Roupp’s spot next week.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #38
Alex Cobb (hip) is close to resuming his minor league rehab assignment.
The 37-year-old right-hander has missed the entire season due to issues with both of his hips, but he now feels like he needs just one more bullpen session before he’ll be ready to head out on a second minor league rehab assignment. His last rehab stint lasted three starts and 6 1/3 innings before he was ultimately shut down over lingering hip issues. At this point, anything the Tigers get from him this season would be a bonus.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #25
Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy told reporters after Friday’s loss to the Marlins that Nick Mears will undergo imaging on his back.
Mears apparently wrenched his back while warming up to go into Friday’s game and then pitched through it — allowing three runs (two earned) on a hit and a pair of walks in 2/3 of an inning. It sounds like he could be heading to the injured list, but they’ll wait and see what the imaging shows first. Expect an update on his status on Saturday.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #40
Rays designated RHP Jacob Waguespack for assignment.
The Rays needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the return of Jonny DeLuca on Friday and Waguespack became the unfortunate roster casualty. The 31-year-old hurler has spent the entire season at Triple-A Durham where he posted a scintillating 0.46 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and an 18/4 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings of work before landing on the injured list with an undisclosed injury in late May.
  • TB Right Fielder #21
Rays activated OF Jonny DeLuca from the 60-day injured list.
He’s active and in uniform for the Rays on Friday night, though he is not in the team’s starting lineup for their battle against the Reds in Cincinnati. DeLuca had been shelved since early April due to a right shoulder strain and suffered multiple setbacks along the way in his recovery. Jacob Waguespack was designated for assignment in a corresponding move on Friday to clear a spot on the Rays’ 40-man roster.
  • TB 2nd Baseman #7
Rays placed INF Ha-Seong Kim on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 22, with a lower back strain.
Jonny DeLuca was activated from the 60-day injured list to take Kim’s place on the Rays’ active roster. The Rays tried to take things day-to-day with Kim but in the end it made more sense to just sit him down for a week and make sure that it gets right rather than risking further aggravation.
  • MIA Left Fielder #28
Kyle Stowers went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and blasted his 23rd home run of the season on Friday afternoon as the Marlins bested the Brewers 5-1.
The 27-year-old outfielder opened the scoring in the ballgame as he crushed a 2-2 changeup from Freddy Peralta for a 392-foot (103.1 mph EV) solo blast in the third inning. He also drew a walk in the seventh inning and scored on a double by Otto Lopez. Stowers has had an impressive season in the middle of the Marlins’ lineup, slashing .296/.376/.573 with the aforementioned 23 long balls and 62 RBI.
