Griffin Canning defeated the Mets by allowing two runs — one earned — in five innings Sunday.
Canning fanned eight batters, topping his season high by two. He also managed to avoid giving up a homer for the first time in 10 starts. The win was his first since June 24, and he moved to 4-10 with a 5.10 ERA overall.

Brent Rooker hit his 30th homer, a two-run blast off Brayan Bello, to help the A’s beat the Red Sox 5-3 on Thursday.
The home run was his third in five games. Rooker is still nine homers shy of last year’s total, though he does have more extra-base hits this season; he currently has 40 doubles, compared to 26 last season.
Fantasy fallout of Alvarez's ankle injury
Eric Samulski breaks down the fantasy implications of Yordan Alvarez suffering a "significant" ankle sprain and the expectation that he will miss the remainder of the regular season.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #70
J.T. Ginn held the Red Sox to two runs over six innings for his fourth win Thursday.
Ginn had just three strikeouts, but his slider was excellent today; he threw the pitch 37 times for 10 whiffs and a 46% CSW, and the hardest it was hit on four balls in play was 94.5 mph, though that one did produce a groundball double. Ginn improved to 4-6 with a 4.57 ERA as he tries to put himself in strong position to make the 2026 rotation. He’ll face the Astros in his probable season finale.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #36
Hogan Harris recorded his second save in three days by allowing one run over the final two innings Thursday against the Red Sox.
Harris gave up a homer to Trevor Story in the eighth, but he retired the other six batters he faced, striking out three of them. It’s his fourth save of the year and first in which he’s gone two innings. He’ll now get Friday off, which could lead to a save chance for Elvis Alvarado and Sean Newcomb.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #66
Brayan Bello lasted only four innings and allowed four runs — three earned — in a loss to the A’s.
Bello’s return to May form isn’t something the Red Sox were banking on this month. He’s totaled 20 innings and posted a 5.85 ERA in four starts during September. From June through August, he had a 2.66 ERA and completed six innings in 15 of 18 starts, never throwing fewer than five. Bello will face the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #70
Making his relief debut, Payton Tolle allowed an unearned run over three innings and struck out four Thursday against the A’s.
Tolle topped out at 99.7 mph in his first inning of work, though his velocity in innings two and three was pretty close to where he was a starter. He wound up getting 12 whiffs on 30 swings in 50 pitches. Since it was an extended outing, he certainly won’t be available again before Sunday, if then.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman #20
After three straight days out of the starting lineup, Zack Gelof went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against the Red Sox on Thursday.
Gelof showed some initial signs of life after being recalled late last month, but his playing time has waned again as he finds himself 3-for-22 with no extra-base hits in his last 10 appearances. At .176/.224/.275 with 45 strikeouts in 99 plate appearances, he just hasn’t made much of a case for being in the Athletics’ plans to begin 2026.
  • BOS Shortstop #10
Trevor Story collected his 25th homers and his 28th double against the A’s on Thursday.
Unfortunately, Story gave the two runs he scored on offense back to the A’s while committing two errors in the game. Still, that’s not at all typical of the veteran. Story has been an excellent player for 3 1/2 months now, and he’s been especially good in hitting .373/.413/.610 so far in September.
  • NYM Left Fielder #9
Brandon Nimmo hit a three-run homer and walked Thursday in the Mets’ 6-1 takedown of the Padres.
The Padres brought in Wandy Peralta to face Nimmo with two on in the third, and Nimmo responded with his seventh homer off a lefty this year. He’s hit 24 homers total this season, matching his career high from two years ago. Nimmo has been slumping somewhat of late, in part because he’s striking out so much; today’s game was the fifth in a row in which he fanned twice. He still has a fine .261/.326/.442 line for the season.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #21
Jonah Tong bounced back from last week’s shellacking to strike out eight and allow just one unearned run over five innings Thursday in a win over the Padres.
Tong allowed four hits, all of them singles, and walked none in the 82-pitch outing. He excelled even though his velocity was down some; he averaged 94.4 mph with his fastball today, down from 95.7 mph in his first three starts (and his two Triple-A starts before that). Tong will probably pitch just once more during the regular season next week against the Cubs.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #98
Randy Vásquez lasted just 2 1/3 innings and was charged with four runs Thursday in a loss to the Mets.
Vásquez surrendered a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the first, but he retired six of eight batters through two innings. Nevertheless, with lefty Brandon Nimmo up, Vásquez was pulled after two singles, a groundout and a walk to start the third, only to watch Wandy Peralta immediately give up a three-run homer. Vásquez dropped to 5-7 with a 3.97 ERA. He’ll probably face the Brewers on Tuesday.
