Max Fried walked five batters in just 3 1/3 innings on Sunday against the Marlins. He allowed four hits and five runs with six strikeouts.
Fried looked terrible in his return from the injured list. His command was horrific with just a 40% zone rate (his season average is 48%) and the new-look Marlins didn’t chase out of the zone very often. Rather, they worked long at-bats, took their free passes, and Jonah Bride delivered a three-run homer off Luke Jackson that tacked two more runs on Fried’s ledger in a disastrous fourth inning. Hopefully he can get on track next time around.

According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the Mets are among the teams that have checked in on White Sox’ outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
The dynamic 27-year-old outfielder is having a miserable season at the plate — slashing just .206/.293/.343 with 10 homers, 41 RBI, 26 stolen bases and a 95/35 K/BB ratio over 328 plate appearances. The prevailing wisdom though is that he would flourish from a change of scenery, and he looks increasingly likely to be dealt before next week’s deadline.
What can Cantillo do with starting opportunity?
Eric Samulski explains why Guardians starter Joey Cantillo could provide fantasy value in the second half of the MLB season.

Ernie Clement swatted a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning on Thursday, powering the Blue Jays to an 11-4 victory over the Tigers in the opener of their four-game series at Comerica Park.
The Blue Jays had been shut out by Reese Olson through the first five innings, but they found their stroke in the sixth. There, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smacked a run-scoring double that tied the game and then with two outs the Tigers walked Addison Barger intentionally to face Clement. He made them pay, clobbering a 1-0 changeup for a 396-foot go-ahead three-run blast. Clement also singled in the ballgame and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, finishing the night 2-for-4. On the season, he’s now slashing .284/.321/.392 with five long balls, 31 RBI and three swipes in 373 plate appearances.
  • TOR Center Fielder #10
Joey Loperfido went 2-for-5 and clubbed his second home run of the season on Thursday as the Blue Jays triumphed over the Tigers in Motown.
Loperfido followed Ernie Clement’s go-ahead three-run blast with a 394-foot (107.2 mph EV) solo shot to right that increased the Jays’ lead to 5-1. The 26-year-old has done a nice job in his limited action with the big league club this season, slashing .324/.361/.529 with two homers and seven RBI in his first 36 plate appearances.
  • TOR 1st Baseman #27
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBI on Thursday as the Blue Jays clobbered the Tigers at Comerica Park.
The 26-year-old slugger finally got the Blue Jays on the board in the sixth inning with a game-tying RBI double off of Reese Olson. He then rode home on Ernie Clement’s go-ahead three-run homer. Guerrero also drove in a run with an RBI single in the seventh inning that made it a 6-1 ballgame and then scored on Addison Barger’s two-run triple. With his three-hit attack, he’s now hitting .289/.393/.448 to go with 13 homers and 52 RBI on the season.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #56
Eric Lauer picked up his sixth victory of the season on Thursday, limiting the Tigers to just one run on five hits over eight stellar frames.
The 30-year-old southpaw punched out six batters on the night and didn’t allow a single base on balls. The only blemish on his day came on a solo home run off the bat of Jahmai Jones in the opening inning. Aside from that, he was brilliant. Lauer generated eight swings and misses on 97 pitches on the evening, registering a strong CSW of 34 percent. He’ll look to keep the good times rolling as he carries a 2.61 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and a 71/16 K/BB ratio (69 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Orioles in Baltimore.
  • DET Right Fielder #18
Jahmai Jones went 1-for-4 and clubbed a solo home run as the Tigers were trounced by the Blue Jays on Thursday evening.
Jones got the Tigers on the board first in this one with a 399-foot (97.0 mph EV) solo shot off of Eric Lauer in the home half of the first inning. That would be the only run that the Tigers could muster over eight innings against Lauer. On the season, the lefty masher is now hitting .246/.328/.544 with four homers and eight RBI in 64 plate appearances.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #45
Reese Olson struggled late during Thursday night’s loss to the Blue Jays, allowing five runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.
The right-hander walked two and struck out four batters on the night. He had shut the Blue Jays out on three hits heading to the fifth inning, but after allowing a one-out walk to George Springer, the wheels fell off the train. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smacked an RBI double, Addison Barger was walked intentionally and Ernie Clement followed with a go-ahead three-run homer. Joey Loperfido then clobbered a solo homer to chase Olson from the game. The 25-year-old hurler got nine whiffs on 95 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 27 percent. He’ll attempt to bounce back as he brings a 3.15 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 65/25 K/BB ratio (68 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s battle against the Diamondbacks.
  • ARI 1st Baseman #22
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Mariners have reached an agreement to acquire first baseman Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks.
Jeff Passan of ESPN adds that the Diamondbacks will receive left-hander Brandyn Garcia and minor league right-hander Ashton Izzi in return for the 28-year-old slugger. There had been rumblings that the Mariners were discussing Eugenio Suarez with the Diamondbacks and it’s unclear if those discussions are still ongoing now that they’ve upgrade their offense with Naylor. Expect the D’Backs to continue to be aggressive in moving pending free agents like Suarez and Merrill Kelly as the trade deadline approaches.
  • STL Right Fielder #21
Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol said Thursday that Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Nolan Gorman (back) are expected to begin minor league rehab assignments early next week.
Nootbaar has been shelved since just before the All-Star break due to a left costochondral sprain. He’ll need at least a few games of live at-bats before he’ll be deemed ready to return to the Cardinals’ lineup. As long as he avoids any setbacks, it’s possible that return could come next weekend against the Padres.
  • LAD 1st Baseman #62
Dodgers signed 1B/OF Matt Gorski to a minor league contract.
The 27-year-old slugger was released by the Pirates just before the All-Star break after slashing .195/.214/.390 with two homers, four RBI and a 16/1 K/BB ratio in 42 plate appearances with the big league club. He’ll presumably report to Triple-A Oklahoma City where he’ll function as extra depth for the Dodgers.
