  • BOS Catcher #12

Connor Wong is at first base and batting fifth for Saturday’s contest against the Rangers.
Fresh off an impressive four-hit performance during Friday evening’s series opener, Wong gets the nod at the cold corner on Saturday night with newly-acquired Danny Jansen handling the catching duties. It’s his first career start anywhere besides catcher in his big league career. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Wong, who is having a breakout season at the plate so far, get a few chances at first base against left-handed pitching over the final two months.

Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday that Eugenio Suárez (hand) is fine and expected to play in Friday’s second half opener against the Cardinals.
The 33-year-old slugger was drilled in the left hand by a pitch from Shane Smith during the eighth inning of Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game, but fortunately he was able to avoid any fractures and simply came away with a contusion. Look for Suárez to be in the Diamondbacks’ lineup when the season resumes on Friday evening.
Eflin's return could boost the Orioles rotation
Eric Samulski reports on the near return of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Zach Eflin and whether he is worth rostering on fantasy rosters.
  • ARI Relief Pitcher #18
Diamondbacks’ skipper Torey Lovullo told reporters on Thursday that right-hander Shelby Miller has begun a throwing program.
That’s definitely encouraging to hear, as the last update the D’Backs’ manager gave to reporters was that Miller was heading to see Dr. Keith Meister for a second opinion. He’s not out of the woods just yet, but it sounds like the team is optimistic that the 34-year-old hurler could make it back to help out their bullpen at some point in the coming weeks.
  • TOR Center Fielder #5
Daulton Varsho (hamstring) began a minor league rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Thursday.
Varsho had been expected to start on Monday, and there have been no indications as to why it got pushed back a couple of days, but he did finally see live game action on Thursday — albeit as the designated hitter. There he went 0-for-3 with a couple of groundouts. He’s likely to remain on a rehab assignment through the weekend at a minimum before potentially being cleared to rejoin the Jays at some point during the following week.
  • MIL Center Fielder #18
Brewers sent OF Drew Avans outright to Triple-A Nashville.
The 29-year-old outfielder had been designated for assignment over the weekend, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and it appears as though he’ll stick around in the organization as extra outfield depth for the moment. Avans has gone 2-for-17 (.118) with six strikeouts in his limited big league action between the Brewers and Athletics this season.
  • TEX 2nd Baseman #56
Rangers recalled INF Justin Foscue from Triple-A Round Rock.
Foscue, 26, has spent the majority of the season at the Triple-A level where he has slashed .262/.353/.471 with 10 homers, 37 RBI, three stolen bases and a 32/27 K/BB ratio over 239 plate appearances. He’ll add depth on the infield for the big league club. Michael Helman was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.
  • TEX 2nd Baseman #24
Rangers optioned INF/OF Michael Helman to Triple-A Round Rock.
The versatile 29-year-old has appeared in five games with the Rangers this season, but has only had six plate appearances, going 0-for-4 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and two runs scored. He’ll return to an everyday role at the Triple-A level for the time being. Justin Foscue was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move on Thursday.
  • STL Shortstop #25
Cardinals optioned INF Thomas Saggese to Triple-A Memphis.
The 23-year-old has struggled at the dish in 90 plate appearances for the Cardinals this season, slashing a meager .233/.256/.326 with one homer, 10 RBI and an uninspiring 23/3 K/BB ratio. He’ return to an everyday role at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once again. The expectation is that Jordan Walker will be activated from the injured list to take his place on the active roster on Friday.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #44
Jesús Luzardo will take the mound for the Phillies as they start the second half of their season on Friday evening against the Angels.
Luzardo will be followed by Taijuan Walker on Saturday and Ranger Suarez on Sunday afternoon. Zack Wheeler will start the first game against the Red Sox on Monday with Cristopher Sanchez rounding out the Phillies’ rotation on Tuesday. Fantasy managers in weekly leagues should be sure to get Wheeler and Sanchez out of lineups for the upcoming weekend if possible.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #45
Reese Olson will take the mound on Friday as the Tigers kick off their second half of the season against the Rangers in Arlington.
No word yet on the scheduled starter for Saturday, though it has been confirmed that Tarik Skubal will take the mound for Sunday’s series finale. Casey Mize seems the most likely to slot in on Saturday with Jack Flaherty and Keider Montero rounding out the rotation against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Monday and Tuesday.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #84
Dylan Cease will get the ball on Friday night against the Nationals in Washington to kick off the second half of the season.
He’ll be followed by Yu Darvish on Saturday and Nick Pivetta on Sunday. The expectation is that Randy Vasquez would follow on Monday against the Marlins in Miami with Ryan Bergert the most likely candidate to take the mound on Tuesday. Cease had a disappointing first half of the season, registering a 3-9 record, 4.88 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 129/39 K/BB ratio over 103 1/3 innings of work.
