Kyle Hendricks was lit up for six runs in five innings by the Royals on Friday.
It’s the seventh time in 14 starts this year that Hendricks has allowed at least five runs, and he dropped to 2-9 with a 6.95 ERA overall. His rotation status would be in trouble if the Cubs were trying to contend, but since it looks like they will sell, he’ll probably get to remain a starter after the deadline.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters Bryson Stott hyperextended his elbow while swinging during Monday’s game against the Marlins.
Stott managed to finish the contest, but will undergo further evaluation and testing to determine the severity of the issue. It sounds like he could wind up getting a couple days off this week as a result of the issue. There should be some clarity on his status ahead of Tuesday’s game.
Fantasy impact of Ohtani returning to mound
James Schiano explains the fantasy implications of Shohei Ohtani being expected to make his Dodgers pitching debut Monday night, sharing how fantasy baseball team managers should handle Ohtani's return to the mound.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #68
    Cardinals released LHP Tyler Matzek.
Matzek didn’t end up pitching anywhere in the Cardinals organization after signing a minor league pact with the club back on June 3. The 34-year-old southpaw should be able to latch on somewhere as extra organizational relief depth.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #11
White Sox released RHP Keone Kela.
Kela never made it back to the majors after signing a minor league contract with the White Sox back in April. The 32-year-old journeyman reliever last pitched in the big leagues back in 2021. He was lit up to the tune of an inflated 8.44 ERA across 16 innings (14 appearances) for Triple-A Charlotte before being cut loose over the weekend.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #99
White Sox released RHP James Karinchak.
Karinchak was one of the most promising young relievers in baseball earlier this decade, but his career went sideways a couple years ago and he hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2023 campaign. He was in camp this spring with the White Sox as a non-roster invitee. The 29-year-old righty was cut loose over the weekend after posting an encouraging 2.45 ERA across 29 1/3 innings (24 appearances) for Triple-A Charlotte. It’s possible he’s headed overseas to pursue an opportunity to pitch in Korea or Japan.
  • LAA 1st Baseman #18
Nolan Schanuel doubled in the top of the 11th to plate the game’s only run as the Angels beat the Yankees 1-0 on Monday.
He then saved the tying run in the bottom of the inning after lunging off the bag at first to prevent an errant throw from Zach Neto allowing Aaron Judge to score. Schanuel also singled earlier in the contest. Because of his lack of power, he’s certainly not very exciting for fantasy purposes. However, with a .285/.377/.398 line in 287 plate appearances, he’s been a pretty solid regular for the Angels this season.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #59
José Soriano scattered six hits over seven scoreless frames against the Yankees on Monday.
Soriano wasn’t as dominant as when he struck out 12 against the A’s last time out, but it was another excellent, WHIP-lowering effort, as he matched his season-low with one walk. His ERA has dropped from 4.11 to 3.54 in his last two starts. His WHIP, once nearly the worst in the league at 1.59, is back to 1.46. He’ll face the Astros next.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #60
Hunter Strickland got a one-out save in the Angels’ 11-inning win over the Yankees on Monday.
Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth in a tie game tonight. It should have been Brock Burke’s save, but Zach Neto bobbled a grounder and made a wild throw on what would have been the final play of the game. Strickland then took over and got Anthony Volpe to roll a ball to third to end it. A great surprise for the Angels, Strickland has yet to allow a run in 14 1/3 innings since being called up last month. Still, he’s probably not going to be in line for more save chances unless something happens to Jansen.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #36
Clarke Schmidt shut out the Angels for 7 2/3 innings in a no-decision Monday.
Another scoreless start for Schmidt. He gave up three runs in the first against the Guardians on June 4, but that’s the only time in his last four outings that he’s been scored upon. Unfortunately, he went without any run support tonight, so he remained 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA through 11 starts. He’ll face the Orioles on Saturday.
  • NYY Right Fielder #27
Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 with a double in his season debut Monday against the Angels.
The double, a hard grounder that went through third baseman Luis Rengifo, led off the bottom of the ninth in a scoreless ninth. Stanton was then removed for pinch-runner Jasson Domínguez, who was quickly retired on a grounder that reached Rengifo at third at basically the same time Domínguez did, resulting in a little collision and a great tag play from Rengifo. Stanton’s balls in play tonight were hit 101.5, 111.1 and 102.9 mph. He also struck out once.
  • TB 2nd Baseman #8
Brandon Lowe went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer on Monday, powering the Rays to a lopsided 7-1 victory over the Orioles.
The Rays continue to roll with Lowe leading the charge on Monday night. He took Orioles starter Zach Eflin deep with a 426-foot moonshot to right-center field in the fourth inning to give Tampa Bay a commanding 5-1 lead at the time. It was his 14th long ball of the season and keeps him on pace to get back to the 30-homer threshold for the first time since the 2021 campaign.
