Zac Gallen hurled six innings of three-run baseball with six strikeouts to get a win over the Pirates on Friday.
It was a bit of a rough start for Gallen, as he gave up a two-run single to Richie Palacios in the first and another run crossed in the second. After that, the 28-year-old pitched well and he was able to pick up the win and a quality start for good measure. The QS did come with some WHIP issues, as he allowed five hits and issued three walks. Gallen takes a 3.70 ERA into a scheduled start versus Washington on Wednesday.

With his wife due to give birth any day now, Zach Wheeler won’t start for the Phillies until Friday at the earliest.
The Phillies will start Cristopher Sánchez, Mick Abel and Jesús Luzardo in the three-game series against the Jays that begins Tuesday. They can also move Ranger Suárez up to Friday if Wheeler needs to be pushed back one additional day.
Palencia 'asserts himself' as Cubs closer
Daniel Palencia has four saves in his last four appearances, and James Schiano examines how the 25-year-old flamethrower has officially asserted himself as the Chicago Cubs closer moving forward.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #17
    Mariners released RHP Trevor Gott.
Gott underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2024 and was on the rehab trail, though the early results weren’t great; he had a 9.95 ERA in 6 1/3 innings for Triple-A Tacoma.
  • FA 1st Baseman #33
    Giants released 1B Jake Lamb.
We haven’t heard whether Lamb opted out of if the Giants decided themselves to move on. The 34-year-old veteran big leaguer was hitting .240/.352/.353 for Triple-A Sacramento. He last played in the majors in 2023, when he hit .216/.259/.353 in 54 plate appearances for the Angels.
  • FA 1st Baseman #22
    Yankees released 1B Dominic Smith.
With Ben Rice performing so well and Giancarlo Stanton coming back at some point, Smith figured to chance with the Yankees was forthcoming and opted out of his minor league deal. He was hitting .255/.333/.448 in 45 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
  • CWS Catcher #89
Catcher prospect Kyle Teel has recently been working out at first base while playing for Triple-A Charlotte.
He’s yet to get into a game at the position. Teel is good enough to stay behind the plate, but so is Edgar Quero, and the White Sox need to have room for both, if not this year, then at least by 2026. Teel is hitting .289/.394/.491 for Charlotte.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #51
Astros signed RHP Jordan Weems to a minor league contract.
Weems, 32, was released by the Braves last month after posting a 5.09 ERA in 17 2/3 innings of relief work for Triple-A Gwinnett. He has a 5.26 ERA in 140 relief appearances over five big-league seasons.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #59
Sean Manaea (oblique) throws his last live batting practice on Monday.
The left-hander will now begin a lengthy rehab process to build up his pitch count before returning to the Mets rotation. Assuming his rehab assignment progresses normally, we could see Manaea back in the Mets rotation by the end of July.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #80
Emmet Sheehan (elbow) threw three scoreless innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday.
Sheehan also struck out five and didn’t walk anybody while throwing 27 of his 39 pitches for strikes. The 25-year-old is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and will need a few more starts before he becomes an option for the Dodgers’ rotation.
  • NYM Shortstop #10
Mets INF prospect Ronny Mauricio went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.
Mauricio, who is coming off a torn ACL, is now up to four stolen bases while slashing .515/.564/.818 in nine games at Triple-A with three home runs, eight RBI, and a 5/5 K/BB ratio. Since getting to Triple-A, Mauricio has split his time between second base and third base. It seems that the Mets may be positioning Mauricio to take Luisangel Acuna’s spot on the roster. Acuna has hit just .204 in 21 games in May, so the Mets may see if Mauricio can bring a bit more juice.
  • ARI Shortstop #10
Jordan Lawlar went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and a run scored for Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
Lawlar is back in Triple-A and right back where he left off. At some point, he’s going to get a shot at full-time playing time at the big league level, but it seems like the Diamondbacks would need to fall out of contention this year for that to happen.
