Athletics placed RHP Mason Miller on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left pinky finger.
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay told reporters Thursday that Miller pounded a training table out of frustration following Monday’s game against the Astros, which resulted in him fracturing the pinky finger on his non-throwing hand. The biggest ramification from the injury is that it takes Miller off the table for contenders as a potential blockbuster acquisition at next week’s trade deadline. The flame-throwing 25-year-old rookie sensation has 15 saves this season to go along with a sparkling 2.21 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 70/14 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings (34 appearances). There is no timetable for Miller’s return at the moment, but there should be some clarity on his status in the coming days. If there’s a glimmer of positive news here it’s that the injury to his non-throwing hand won’t prevent him from continuing to throw while he recovers.
