The Dodgers are currently listing their Sunday start as TBA.
That would be River Ryan’s turn and it seems likely that he’ll make the start, but the Dodgers declined to confirm it while announcing that they’d start Gavin Stone on Friday and Justin Wrobleski on Saturday. Ryan was effective Monday in his major league debut, allowing only an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings.

Giants’ manager Bob Melvin told reporters on Friday that Jerar Encarnacion has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain.
That means the 27-year-old slugger is going to be out for a while. The Giants estimate that he’ll miss four-to-six weeks with the injury and it’s possible if he has any setbacks that he may miss the remainder of the 2025 season. Drew Gilbert was promoted to take his place on the roster on Friday and now he may have some runway to carve out a legitimate role.
Astros getting reinforcements to starting rotation
Eric Samulski checks in on the Astros rotation after Spencer Arrighetti made his return to the mound while Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia are ramping up for their respective returns.
  • LAD Relief Pitcher #38
Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts said Friday that Kirby Yates (back) is tracking toward a return to the Dodgers’ bullpen in late August.
Roberts noted that Yates, Michael Kopech and Tanner Scott are all expected to rejoin the bullpen before the month of August is through and that Yates will likely be the first of the trio to return. The 38-year-old hurler has been sidelined since July 29 due to pain in his lower back.
  • LAD 2nd Baseman #25
Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Tommy Edman (ankle) is unlikely to rejoin the Dodgers until September.
The versatile 30-year-old has been sidelined since August 4 due to a right ankle sprain. It’s an issue that had been bothering him for a while before he re-aggravated it during Sunday’s game against the Rays. It sounds like the team plans to play it safe and make sure that it’s fully healed this time around before rushing him back into action.
  • TOR Center Fielder #10
Joey Loperfido (knee) remains out of the Blue Jays’ lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Dodgers.
Even if he was fully healthy, it’s possible that Loperfido would be sitting against Dodgers’ veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw. The more encouraging sign is that he hasn’t landed on the injured list, meaning that the Jays think that he’s nearing a return. Expect him back in the lineup before the weekend series is through.
  • CHC Left Fielder #26
Cubs signed OF Forrest Wall to a minor league contract.
The 29-year-old outfielder opted out of his minor league deal with the Padres last weekend after slashing .298/.384/.429 with four homers, 39 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 279 plate appearances at Triple-A El Paso. He’ll report to Triple-A Iowa where he’ll add extra outfield depth for the Cubs.
  • TB 1st Baseman #2
Yandy Díaz is not in the Rays’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Mariners in Seattle.
It looks to be nothing more than an evening of rest for the 34-year-old infielder. Brandon Lowe will slide over and cover first base in his absence while Tristan Gray will start at second base and bat ninth for the Rays against M’s right-hander Luis Castillo on Friday night.
  • KC 1st Baseman #14
Royals’ manager Matt Quatraro told reporters on Friday that Jac Caglianone (hamstring) is progressing nicely in his recovery and could begin a minor league rehab assignment next week.
The 22-year-old slugger has been sidelined since July 26 due to a left hamstring strain. He’ll continue to work out with the team through the weekend, and as long as he continues to progress he’ll head out on a minor league rehab assignment to begin next week. Look for him to rejoin the Royals the following week if everything goes according to plan.
  • SF 1st Baseman #41
Wilmer Flores (hamstring) remained out of the Giants’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Nationals.
Flores has now missed an entire week’s worth of action after leaving last Friday’s game against the Mets due to tightness in his left hamstring. He’s close to a return though which is why the Giants haven’t placed him on the injured list. He’ll keep taking things day-to-day. Rafael Devers will cover first base on Friday night with Dominic Smith functioning as the team’s designated hitter.
  • SF Center Fielder #56
Giants designated OF Daniel Johnson for assignment.
The Giants needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the promotion of Drew Gilbert on Friday and unfortunately Johnson was the one left out in the cold this time around. The 30-year-old outfielder has hit just .172/.226/.345 with one home run, one RBI and one stolen base in 31 plate appearances at the big league level this season. There’s a decent chance he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as extra outfield depth for the Giants.
  • SF Center Fielder #83
Giants selected the contract of OF Drew Gilbert from Triple-A Sacramento.
Gilbert will take the place of the injured Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) on the Giants’ active roster. The 24-year-old joined the Giants just before the trade deadline as part of the return package for Tyler Rogers. He had been hitting .262/.369/.466 with 14 homers, 55 RBI and six stolen bases over 408 plate appearances in the minor leagues this season. He’ll make his big league debut as soon as he gets into a game with the Giants.
