  • BOS Shortstop #5
The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reports that Grissom “could see a rehab assignment within the next couple weeks.”
After the Red Sox traded Chris Sale to get Grissom this offseason, the 23-year-old has only played in 23 games. He began the year on the IL with a hamstring injury and then was sidelined a month later when they resurfaced. According to McCaffrey, “The Red Sox have tried to balance out the strength in each hamstring to ensure he can stay on the field.” With David Hamilton playing well, the Red Sox likely won’t rush Grissom back, but his eventual return could complicate playing time in the middle infield.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #66
Brayan Bello will start Thursday’s game against the Rays.
Bello was scheduled to start Friday against the Twins, but the Red Sox will move the right-hander up one day. He’ll still work on regular rest, and Richard Fitts will likely get the start over the weekend against Minnesota.
  • BOS Shortstop #10
Trevor Story went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two stolen bases, and scored twice in a 2-1 win over the Rays on Wednesday.
It’s great to see Story simply healthy and playing well. He hasn’t looked great, but what can we really expect from someone who’s played less than a full season’s worth of games since 2022. The steals are a great sign that he trusts his legs and his home run was his second in five games. Also, this was his third multi-hit effort over that span. Hopefully he can build some momentum in what could possibly be a healthy 2025. Fingers cross.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #74
Kenley Jansen walked two and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save against the Rays on Wednesday.
Jansen made this one more difficult than he needed to as he walked two and then allowed a double-steal with two outs before slamming the door for his 27th save. He’s remained remarkably consistent at 36-years-old and seems to be putting himself in position for another year as a closer for whoever he chooses to play for in 2025.
  • TB Right Fielder #15
Josh Lowe went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored on Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Shocker: the Rays’ offense was only able to muster one run. There may not be a more feeble non-White Sox lineup in the league right now. Lowe had their only extra-base hit, scored their only run, and accounted for their only two hard-hit balls.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #44
Ryan Pepiot gave up just two hits and one run with 12 strikeouts over six brilliant innings in a no-decision on Wednesday against the Red Sox.
This start was a great reminder of how high Pepiot’s ceiling still is. Striking out 12 batters in six innings is downright disgusting. Doing it with only 76 pitches is pure madness. His fastball forced 15 swings-and-misses on its own and was visually stunning as Boston’s batters continued to miss it at the top of the zone. His lone blemish came on a Trevor Story solo home run off a fastball that caught a little too much of the heart of the plate, but all in all this was a gem to the highest degree. He’s scheduled to face the Tigers in Detroit in his next start.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #89
Tanner Houck allowed four hits and one run with four strikeouts across four innings in a no-decision on Wednesday against the Rays.
This was an odd start for Houck. The Red Sox are obviously trying to limit his workload as he’s already thrown a career-high innings and has struggled when pitching deeper into games over the last few months. So, he was pulled after 60 pitches and just two times around the lineup. In this short outing, he limited the usage of his sinker against left-handed batters and threw more sweepers and splitters earlier in counts than he has otherwise this season. He’s scheduled to face the Blue Jays in Toronto next time out, but it’s unlikely he pitches deep in that game.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #47
Jakob Junis allowed one run in six innings and got a no-decision against the Braves on Wednesday.
Junis gave up two hits, walked none and struck out six. It was another solid start for Junis, who pitched well enough to win but the Reds scored only one run on the night. He’s allowed two runs in 19 innings over four starts for Cincinnati. Junis has a 2.61 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 48 strikeouts in 62 innings on the year. The 32-year-old right-hander is set to face the Guardians on the road next week.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #56
Spencer Schwellenbach allowed one run in six inning and got the win in the Braves’ 7-1 victory over the Reds on Wednesday.
Schwellenbach gave up five hits, walked two and struck out five. The win was his seventh of the season. Schwellenbach continues to show promise in his rookie season. He’s allowed three earned runs or less in 13 of his last 14 starts. Schwellenbach has a 2.77 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 78 innings in that time. He has a 3.61 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings on the year. The 24-year-old right-hander is set to face the Mets at home next week.
  • SD Right Fielder #23
Fernando Tatis Jr. went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the Astros on Wednesday.
The home run was Tatis Jr.'s 19th of the season. He hit a solo shot off Kaleb Ort in the eighth inning. Tatis Jr. has been on fire recently. He’s 12-for-33 (.363) with five home runs and nine RBI in his last eight games. Tatis Jr. is hitting .282 with an .837 OPS and 46 RBI on the season.
  • SD Third Baseman #13
Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs against the Astros on Wednesday.
Machado now has 29 home runs on the year. He hit a solo shot off Framber Valdez in the sixth inning and another solo shot off Kaleb Ort in the eighth inning. Machado has been hot in September so far. He’s 20-for-62 (.322) with six home runs and 21 RBI in 15 games in September. Machado is hitting .279 with an .814 OPS and 104 RBI on the year.
