Bloss struck out four and issued only one walk on Thursday night in his return from the injured list. He gave up four hits, including a solo homer to Bryan De La Cruz. The bigger issue here was that it took him a staggering 82 pitches (50 strikes) to complete four frames. The 23-year-old pitching prospect has shown some promise in a pair of outings so far, allowing four runs on 10 hits with a 6/2 K/BB ratio across 7 2/3 innings.

Padres manager Mike Schildt made the announcement on 97.3 The Fan in San Diego. Schildt also announced that Tatis Jr. is expected to start facing live pitching soon as he works his way back from the stress reaction in his right leg. If everything goes to plan, there’s a great chance the 25-year-old is back in action for the Padres at some point in September, likely closer to the middle of the month than early.

Kim was placed on the injured list on August 19 with right shoulder inflammation, so while he can’t be activated until Thursday, it sounds very likely that the 28-year-old shortstop will be in action as soon as he is eligible to come off the list.

Soroka has been out of action since the middle of July with a right shoulder strain. He’ll likely need to make a couple of rehab appearances before having a chance to join the White Sox rotation in the middle of September.

Moncada will begin his second rehab assignment after being pulled off one in late July with soreness. The 29-year-old could return to the White Sox lineup near the start of September, but he shouldn’t be considered in fantasy leagues by anyone but the most desperate.

Sasaki, 22, is widely considered one of the most talented pitchers in the world. Passan reports that the relationship between Sasaki and the Marines has become fractured after they didn’t honor his request last offseason, but that it’s just as possible — maybe even likely — that he’ll not be available again this winter. If Sasaki is posted, there will be numerous suiters for the right-hander, as he has the stuff to potentially pitch at the top of a rotation as soon as 2025.

Gray was cast off the 40-man roster Monday to make room for a couple of new additions to the active group. The 28-year-old will now hit the waiver wire, and a team with 40-man room may have interested in acquiring him as infield depth for the rest of the year and potentially the 2025 campaign.

Brantly was designated for assignment Saturday, and was not claimed on waivers. The catcher could elect waivers, but also is just as likely — if not more so — to stay in Triple-A to provide organizational depth.

Harris II was not only able to return defensively and make a couple of solid plays, but he was also able to swing the bat. The outfielder left Sunday’s game with soreness in his left hand after being hit by a pitch, but the fact he was able to get into this game suggests he should be back in the starting lineup shortly, very possibly Tuesday against Minnesota.

Lowe provided the lone scoring play for the Rays with a solo homer off an otherwise dominant Bryce Miller in the second inning. The 26-year-old has been limited to 75 games this year, and he’s homered just eight times with 28 RBI in 248 at-bats.

Polanco tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning with a homer off Ryan Pepiot. It’s a nice moment in a mostly atrocious — or at the very least extremely disappointing — season for Polanco, as the 13 homers don’t really compensate for a .219/.308/.367 slash.
