  • TOR Shortstop #11
Bo Bichette is not in the starting lineup for Sunday’s tilt against the Yankees.
It’s a scheduled off day for Bichette after he returned off the injured list Tuesday from his calf strain. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will get the start at shortstop in his place and hit leadoff.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #77
    Guardians released RHP Zak Kent.
Kent passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last weekend and will search for a new opportunity elsewhere. The 26-year-old was picked up back in March in a small trade with the Rangers and didn’t end up making an appearance for the Guardians.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #58
Blue Jays released LHP Tim Mayza.
Mayza was officially cut loose on Friday after no team picked him up off waivers. The 32-year-old southpaw was a key fixture in Toronto’s relief mix over the last few years, but fell off a cliff this season with an inflated 8.03 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and 16/12 K/BB ratio across 24 2/3 innings (35 appearances). It’s possible he’ll land somewhere else in the coming days, most likely on a minor league deal.
  • FA Shortstop #7
    Marlins released SS Tim Anderson.
No team was willing to take on the remainder of Anderson’s salary after he was waived earlier this week by the Marlins. After two consecutive dismal campaigns at the dish, it’s possible he won’t get another shot in the majors moving forward. It’s been a sudden precipitous decline for the 31-year-old shortstop, who was one of the premier performers at his position just a few years ago. He might be able to latch on somewhere on a minor league deal, but that’s probably it at this stage of his career.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #39
Mets activated RHP Edwin Díaz from the restricted list.
Díaz has finished serving an automatic 10-game suspension handed down by the league after he was ejected back on June 23 for using an illegal foreign substance. The 30-year-old will be back in New York’s bullpen for Saturday’s contest against the Pirates.
  • HOU Third Baseman #2
Alex Bregman went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and two walks Friday as the Astros edged the Twins 13-12.
Bregman’s seemingly meaningless homer made it a 13-5 game in the ninth before the Twins almost came all of the way back in the bottom of the inning. It was Bregman’s first homer since June 3 and 10th of the year. At .251/.314/.403, he’s been essentially a league-average hitter halfway through his walk year.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #71
Josh Hader recorded his 15th save despite giving up a grand slam to one of the two batters he faced in the ninth Friday against the Twins.
Carlos Correa hit the slam to make it a 13-12 game, but Hader then struck out Manuel Margot to end it. The homer was the seventh allowed by Hader in 39 innings, but since none of the runners on base belonged to him, his ERA only slightly increased to 3.92.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #49
Pablo López was tagged for six runs in five innings Friday in a loss to the Astros.
López didn’t allow any extra-base hits tonight, but the singles were all bunched together. Four came in a three-run second inning that featured just one hard-hit ball. The remaining three runs all scored in the sixth after he allowed three singles to begin the inning and was pulled. The loss leaves him 8-7 with a 5.17 ERA, but that just makes him an excellent buy-low candidate in fantasy leagues,
  • MIN Third Baseman #64
Jose Miranda finished 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and three runs scored Friday against the Astros.
Incredibly, the Twins pinch-hit for Miranda in the ninth, even though he had delivered hits in 10 consecutive at-bats, and it worked, as Austin Martin singled off Luis Contreras. Still, the Twins went on to lose anyway, Miranda is 25-for-50 in his last 13 games, raising his average from .277 to .324 and his OPS from .778 to .893.
  • MIN Shortstop #4
Carlos Correa hit his third career grand slam Friday against the Astros.
The slam was off Josh Hader in the ninth, but the Twins still came up a little short after scoring seven runs in the final frame of a 13-12 loss. It was Correa’s 11th homer this year., and he’s been one of the AL’s best players while batting .307/.377/.514.
  • KC Shortstop #7
Bobby Witt Jr. went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in a loss to the Rockies on Friday.
Witt Jr. has doubled 25 times in 2024, and he came around to score after his two-bagger Friday on a single by Salvador Perez. He came up just short in the All-Star voting, but barring something completely unforeseeable he’ll definitely be involved in the game with a slash of .321/.371/.559 over his 90 games.
